Materials and Methods: The study included 20 cancer cases with 26 febrile neutropenia (FEN) episodes. Patient selection criteria were defined according to the guidelines issued by the Infectious Disease Society of America (IDSA). Results: Patients diagnosed with acute leukemia (58%) and solid tumors (42%) were recorded. Twelve (46.2%) of the primary disease cases were refractory. The number of infection episodes identified microbiologically and clinically was 10 (38.5%) and 12 (46.1%), respectively. Fever of unknown origin was observed in …

Materials and methods: We compared 360 newly diagnosed pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) and extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) patients who were treated and followed up in Kahramanlar Tuberculosis Dispensary between 2000 and 2003, and were older than 15 years of age. The medical records of both patient groups were investigated in terms of age, sex, accompanying diseases, contact history and means of diagnosis. Results: The data were compared statistically between the 2 groups. Of these patients 78.1% were diagnosed with PTB while …

Aim The aim of this study was to evaluate the epidemiological risk factors for Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) patients admitted to our hospitals between January 2004- December 2006. Materials and methods: This was a study of 63 CCHF patients whose definitive diagnosis was based on the detection of CCHF virus-specific IgM by ELISA and/or of genomic segments of the CCHF virus by real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and 50 healthy controls. Related data were collected prospectively. Results: Twenty-two (50.8%) of the patients were female, and 31 of them (49.2%) were male. The mean age of the patients was 46 …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
Aim: We aimed to assess the predictive value of a combination some of basic serum biochemical markers for the diagnosis of clinically significant fibrosis in chronic hepatitis C. Materials and methods: Blood samples from 68 patients with chronic hepatitis C infection were analyzed for aspartate aminotransferase, prothrombin INR, and platelet count. The liver histopathology was evaluated using the Knodell protocol. The relationship between the serum biochemical markers and severity of the stages were examined. Results: A strong association was found between the fibrosis stage and platelet count and GUCI (P < 0.001, P = 0.035 respectively) but not APRI ([AST/ULN] / Platelet count [ ×109 /L]) × 100) (P = 0.052). The relationship between the platelet count

Aim: The main objective of this study was to assess the genotoxicity of ribavirin in 15 patients who were suffering from Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever and treated with the therapy dose of the antiviral agent. Materials and Methods: Genotoxicity was evaluated using the cytokinesis-blocked micronucleus (MN) and sister chromatid exchange (SCE) assays in lymphocyte cultures that were prepared from blood samples collected from the 15 patients. The blood samples were taken on day 9 of a 10-day therapeutic regimen of ribavirin and 1 month after the cessation of therapy. Results: In all patients, the frequency of sister chromatid exchanges and the …

Aim: Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is still the commonest pathogen in hospital-acquired infections with high morbidity and mortality. MRSA colonization usually precedes infection and dissemination of the microorganism. The aim of this study was to determine risk factors for the colonization and infection with MRSA in a medical intensive care unit (MICU) and to show the genetic relation of strains. Materials and methods: This study was conducted prospectively between 1 December 2004 and 31 January 2006 in MICU. Patients (>16 years) admitted to the MICU were screened for MRSA on admission (in the first 48 hours), at the end …

Aims: Acinetobacter species usually affect hospitalized patients and are involved in many infections associated with a high mortality rate. Management of infections caused by these strains is very difficult, as the strains often display multiple drug resistance, including carbapenem resistance. Tigecycline is the most recently developed semi-synthetic broad spectrum glycylcycline antibiotic. The present study was conducted to evaluate the in vitro susceptibility of Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from the hospitalized patients to tigecycline. Materials and Methods: Acinetobacter isolates were collected from hospitalized patients with documented nosocomial infections between June 2005 and October 2006. Only one isolate per patient was accepted. …

Aim: The elderly have defective host defenses that compromise their ability to ward off infectious agents; factors influencing immunocompetence include impaired host defenses such as diminished cell-mediated immunity, changes in chronic diseases, medications, malnutrition and functional impairments. This study was conducted in order to determine the pattern of clinical infectious diseases in a series of hospitalized elderly patients. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional study, all elderly patients who were admitted to our hospital in Zahedan (Southeast Iran) between 2001 and 2006 were evaluated. We retrospectively reviewed the 1278 patients for diagnostic studies, risk factors, treatment options and morbidity and …

Production And Characterization Of Monoclonal Anti-Ovalbumin Antibodies, Mehmet Zi̇ya Doymaz, Hakan Bulut, Aykut Özdarendeli̇, Yusuf Bolat
Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences
In this study, the results of anti- ovalbumin (OVA) monoclonal antibody production and characterization are reported. Splenocytes from OVA-hyperimmune Balb/C mouse were fused with F0 myeloma cells and resulting hybridoma cells were selected in hypoxanthine-aminopterine-thymidine containing medium. A total of 37 HAT resistant hybridomas were obtained. Upon testing the hybridoma supernatants in OVA and mouse immunoglobulin G specific enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, we observed that two of the hybridomas secreted OVA specific antibodies. The hybridomas produced IgG class antibodies. The hybridomas were grown and the supernatants from the cultures were also tested in a Western Blot assay. The results of ELISA …
