Background/aim: Because biofilms are resistant to antibiotics and biocides, they usually cause chronic persistent infections, which are arduous to cure and have high mortality and morbidity. Our study aimed to investigate the efficiency of orthophthalaldehyde, peracetic acid, hydrogen peroxide, and sodium hypochlorite on Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus biofilm layers and live microbial cells. Materials and methods: Biofilm layers were determined by crystal violet assay and live microbial cells were determined using a resazurin assay. Results: For Pseudomonas aeruginosa, sodium hypochlorite showed the most influential disinfection because it diminished 83.6% of the biofilm layer and decreased 99.7% of live microbial …

Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, the VAP data from 13 public sector hospitals were collected from January to December 2013 and analyzed using SPSS 16. Results: The overall VAP rate in Makkah Region hospitals was 6.89 cases per 1000 ventilator-days. There was a significant difference in VAP rate among the hospitals of the Makkah Region (P < 0.001). There was no significant difference in the VAP rate among hospitals, which were using only one, two, or all three VAP preventive approaches (P = 0.26) accredited by the Joint Commission International (JCI) and Central Board for Accreditation of Health Care Institution (CBAHI) (P = 0.12), and using the form in intensive care units (ICUs) (P = 0.85). There was a significant difference in the VAP rate among hospitals having different bed capacities (P < 0.001), data regularly collected (P = 0.03), and had a team to supervise the VAP project (P = 0.04). Conclusion: The VAP rate in Makkah Region hospitals is 6.89 cases per 1000 ventilator-days.

Increased Il-17 And Tgf-Ss Serum Levels In Peripheral Blood Of Patients With Ss-Thalassemia Major: Implication For Continual Transfusions Role In T Helper 17-Mediated Proinflammatory Responses, Rasoul Baharlou, Mohammad Hassan Davami, Abbas Ahmadi-Vasmehjani, Morteza Ebrahimi Jan 2016

Increased Il-17 And Tgf-Ss Serum Levels In Peripheral Blood Of Patients With Ss-Thalassemia Major: Implication For Continual Transfusions Role In T Helper 17-Mediated Proinflammatory Responses, Rasoul Baharlou, Mohammad Hassan Davami, Abbas Ahmadi-Vasmehjani, Morteza Ebrahimi

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Recent studies have shown that IL-17-producing CD4+ T helper (Th17) cells play an important role in proinflammatory processes. In this report we analyzed IL-17, IL-21, and TGF-β serum levels in the peripheral blood of Iranian beta-thalassemia major patients that clinically exhibited splenectomy and iron overload. Materials and methods: Blood samples were collected from 43 beta-thalassemia patients and 43 healthy individuals with no history of malignancies or autoimmune disorders. Then serum levels of IL-17, IL-21, and TGF-β were measured by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Results: The levels of IL-17 (P = 0.005) and TGF-β (P < 0.001) were significantly higher in the thalassemia patients compared to the healthy control. No significant differences in the level of serum IL-21 was observed between the patients and controls. There were no significant differences in serum levels of IL-17, IL-21, and TGF-β between patients with high or low serum levels of ferritin. Conclusion: Multiple blood transfusions cause constant immune stimulation, as a result of repeated exposure to new alloantigens. This might have significant effects on the stimulation of cytokine producing cells in those patients and cytokine profile can be used as a related marker for assessing disease severity and consequently therapeutic intervention.

Background/aim: The aims of this study were to evaluate measles incidence and the effect of elimination strategy interventions on the disease from 1960 to 2014 in Turkey. The administration of measles vaccine started in the rural regions in 1970; it was carried out as a campaign along with the National Vaccine Campaign in 1985, and it has been employed as combined measles, mumps, and rubella under the scope of the Measles Elimination Program (MEP) since 2006 in Turkey. While a dramatic decrease in the reporting of measles was observed between 2000 and 2010, the number of the cases has increased …

Background/aim: We aim to describe the clinical and laboratory characteristics, treatment, and outcomes of 21 patients with Brucella epididymo-orchitis (BEO) from Eskişehir Yunus Emre State Hospital, Turkey. Materials and methods: A total of 21 patients with BEO who were diagnosed and followed in the Infectious Diseases Clinic between June 2001 and June 2013 were evaluated retrospectively. Results: One hundred and twenty-eight of 192 patients evaluated throughout the study were male and BEO was determined in 21 (16.4%) patients. A total of 18 (85.7%) patients had a titer of ≥1:160 in standard agglutination test (STA). Three patients with STA

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The prevalences of Plasmodium falciparum and Plasmodium vivax are increasing rapidly in Pakistan, but recent data on the epidemiology of malaria are not properly reported with scarce diagnostic methods for quick diagnosis. This study was designed to determine the current prevalence and distribution of Plasmodium species in the vicinity of Rawalpindi and Islamabad and report on the validity of the immunochromatographic test (ICT) in diagnosing malarial infections. Materials and methods: A total of 1500 blood samples obtained from a local hospital were screened during the course of this study via microscopic examination and ICT. Results: It was seen that …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: T-helper cell type 1 (Th1)/Th2 cytokine balance is involved in the resistance or susceptibility to Brucella infection. The analysis of cytokine levels is valuable to determine the role of the immune system in Brucella prognosis. The aim of this study was to investigate the levels of serum interleukin-17 (IL-17) and transforming growth factor beta (TGF-β) and their alterations with treatment in patients with acute brucellosis. Materials and methods: TGF-β was tested in 33 acute brucellosis patients and 19 controls and IL-17 was analyzed in 40 patients and 12 controls. Cytokine levels were tested in controls and patients before and …

Background/aim: In this observational study, the effects of oral ribavirin on clinical and laboratory parameters and blood products use in patients with Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) were evaluated. Materials and methods: CCHF patients (n = 100) who were hospitalized between 2007 and 2010 were included. Oral ribavirin was administered to 56 patients with symptom duration less than 5 days. Forty-four patients did not receive ribavirin (control group). The patients that received ribavirin in the first 3 days following the initiation of symptoms were designated as Group 1 (n = 29) and the others were designated as Group 2. Results: Ribavirin-treated …
