Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including diclofenac, naproxen, ibuprofen, acetylsalicylic acid, and acetaminophen have been shown to have antimicrobial effects on various microorganisms. The aim of this study was to investigate the antibacterial effects of NSAIDs on Staphylococcus aureus. Materials and methods: Susceptibilities of S. aureus strains to NSAIDs with or without antimicrobials (moxifloxacin, vancomycin, ciprofloxacin, clindamycin, and gentamicin) were determined using the microdilution method and disk diffusion test. Expression levels of genes in the presence of drugs were investigated by real-time quantitative RT-PCR (qRT-PCR), and immunoblotting analysis was performed for staphylococcal protein A (SpA). Results: Our results showed that …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: The COVID-19 pandemic originated in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and became one of the worst global health crises ever. While struggling with the unknown nature of this novel coronavirus, many researchers and groups attempted to project the progress of the pandemic using empirical or mechanistic models, each one having its drawbacks. The first confirmed cases were announced early in March, and since then, serious containment measures have taken place in Turkey. Materials and methods: Here, we present a different approach, a Bayesian negative binomial multilevel model with mixed effects, for the projection of the COVID-19 pandemic and we …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: In the last years, incidence of carbapenem resistant Acinetobacter baumannii sepsis is increasing with high mortality. However, it is not clear whether this is due to inadequate antimicrobial choice or a more severe clinical course. We aimed to evaluate the inflammation and adrenal involvement in the carbapenem resistant A. baumannii by using experimental mouse model sepsis. Materials and methods: Balb/c female mice were randomly put into control and three sepsis groups (A. baumannii susceptible to carbapenem-CSAB-, A. baumannii resistant to carbapenem-CRAB-, Escherichia coli). A total of sixty mice were included in this study with each group having 15 mice. …

Background/aim: Coronavirus 2019 disease (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), is a pandemic infectious disease that causes morbidity and mortality. As a result of high mortality rate among the severe COVID-19 patients, the early detection of the disease stage and early effective interventions are very important in reducing mortality. Hence, it is important to differentiate severe and nonsevere cases from each other. To date, there are no proven diagnostic or prognostic parameters that can be used in this manner. Due to the expensive and not easily accessible tests that are performed for COVID-19, researchers are investigating …

Background/aim: COVID-19 patients have a wide spectrum of disease severity. Several biomarkers were evaluated as predictors for progression towards severe disease. IL-21 is a member of common γ-chain cytokine family and creates some specific effects during programming and maintenance of antiviral immunity. We aimed to assess IL-21 as a biomarker for diagnosis and outcome prediction in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Materials and methods: Patients with a preliminary diagnosis of COVID-19 and pneumonia other than COVID-19 admitted to a tertiary care hospital were included consecutively in this comparative study. Results: The study population consisted of 51 patients with COVID-19 and 11 …

Clinical Features And Immunoglobulin Replacement Therapy Outcomes Of Adults Withcommon Variable Immunodeficiency: A Single Centre Experience, Uğur Haci̇ Muşabak, Tuba Erdoğan

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Background/aim: Common variable immunodeficiency (CVID) characterized by defective immunoglobulin production is the most prevalent form of symptomatic primary immunodeficiency (PID) in adults. We aimed to reveal the clinical features of adults with CVID and to evaluate the effects of immunoglobulin replacement treatment (IRT) on hemato-immunological findings. Materials and methods: This study included 26 adult patients receiving IRT. Two measurements of complete blood counts and major immunoglobulin levels obtained at the beginning-end of follow up period were used for comparisons. Lymphocyte subsets and B-cell subgroups were measured only at the time of presentation. Results: The most common complications were related to …
