The purpose of this study is two fold: first, to review the historical sources pertaining to the observance of fasting from the time of the establishment of the church in 1830 until 1896, when the last essential change in its observance occurred; and second, as the payment of fast offerings is so closely related to an analysis of the subject, to trace its development out of the Church's policy to provide for its poor.

Early Utah history involved many adjustments of differences between the pioneers and the Indians. This thesis is a study of the differences and of the policies adopted to alleviate them, particularly in the background, setting, and events of the Walker War.
The Mormons came into a territory inhabited by the aggressive Ute Indians. However, the niggardness of nature and the white man's oppression had reduced them to a condition of destitution. They had descended to trading, begging, and stealing. Possibly, with the idea of exploiting the Mormons, the Indians invited them to settle in various sections of the territory. The …

Bedrock river terraces, as much as 275 to 500 feet above the present Little Missouri, are remnants of a former floodplain. The presence of these former shallow valley floor (Little Missouri Terrace No. 4) along the pre-glacial channel and east and north of the Killdeer Mountains suggests several pre-glacial rivers.
Peripheral precipitation in advance of the Kansan-Illinoian glacier, head-ward erosion with consequent new gradient breached the divide between the pre-glacial Little Missouri River and the “Medicine Stone” River, (herein named, after a local landmark), which flowed eastward into pre-glacial Missouri River.

The origin of the Smoot family is traced to thirteenth century Holland when a vassal of the Count of Holland chose the name Smout. The family, after conspicuous service, entered the ranks of the nobility and gained a coat of arms. William Smoot contracted to perform fifty days service in the Colony of Virginia in 1633. Impressed by the new land, he settled in America.
His decendent and the subject of this biography was born on February 17, 1815, in Owenton Franklin County, Kentucky, to George Smoot and Ann Rowlett who named their infant son Abraham Owen Smoot after an …

Much work has been done concerning those parasites found upon the host. Very little has been done concerning those parasites that are parasitic but are very rarely found upon the host. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to determine seasonal distribution of those fleas found in the nests of the desert wood rat (N. l. lepida). This paper shows that there is a seasonal variation of flea populations within a certain geographic area. It also shows that certain species of fleas are distributed seasonally; not all species being present in the same season. Three of the eleven species collected …

The purpose of this thesis has been to make a collection of the seeds of herbaceous dicotyledonous garden flowers of Utah, to examine their external structural characteristics and to prepare keys for their classification. A collection of the seeds of 146 species of garden flowers has been made, and includes species of 41 families. The seeds have been cleaned and dried and a collection stored in labelled vials and left in the Botany Department of the Brigham Young University.
