The Production Of Activated Carbon From North Dakota Lignite, Robert C. Thelen

The feasibility of producing activated carbon from lignite using a fluid bed reactor was investigated. Steam was used as the activating agent and was- reacted with carbonized lignite at elevated temperatures. The reaction was performed in a fluidized bed type reactor 1 l/2" in diameter and 24" in length.

Tests indicate that activated carbon with adsorptive properties equal to or better than commercial Darco activated carbon can be produced from lignite in a fluidized reactor. A systematic study of parasitic mites on kangaroo rats at the Nevada Test Site, Nye County, Nevada, was conducted from August, 1959, to December, 1961. The intent was to determine their kinds, numbers, seasonal occurrence, and ecological relationship with Dipodomys merriami merriami Mearns and Dipodomys microps occidentalis Hall and Dale in nuclear disturbed and contiguous undisturbed areas. Study areas were established in three major valleys -- Jackass Flats, Yucca Flat, and F renchman Flat.

Recent progress in structural engineering has been marked by the increased use of thin shells as load carrying members. In particular, shells of revolution have been widely utilized in the missile industry whereas shells of arbitrary shape have been incorporated in the architectural design of today's modern buildings. Missile applications have been extensively studied both statically and dynamically. However, architechural applications have generally been limited to the statics problem with little consideration being given to the dynamic behavior of these unique structures.

Freezing-point diagrams were detennined tor a number or p-dioxane systems. The system, p-dioxane:carbon tetrachloride, was found to contain a 1:2 complex with a congruent melting point of 255.71 °K. This confirmed work reported in the literature. Solid solutions in the region between 0.0000 and 0.4796 mole fraction of p-dioxane were found in the present study. The system, p-dioxane:chloroform, was found to contain a 1:2 complex with a congruent melting point of 215.65 °K. It was determined that no other complexes formed in the solid state. This information resolved contradicting reports in the literature. The system, p-dioxane:dichloromethane, was found to contain …

Specimens of animal dung were collected from various areas of the state of Utah. These were cultured by placing a few small pieces in a culture dish over moistened sphagnum moss and filter paper. The cultures were observed periodically and specimens were studied as they matured upon the substratum. A total of eighty-four species representing three orders and fifteen genera are reported. Of these, nine species have not previously been described. Included is one species, Tripterospora erostrata, from the order Plectascales of the Series Plectomyceteae. The pure sodium salts of the toluenesulfonic acids were prepared by one of two ways. Both methods started with diazotization of the toluidine. In the first method, the diazonium solution was treated with sulfur dioxide and copper powder, and the resulting sulfinic acid was oxidized to the sulfonic acid with potassium permanganate. In the second method, the diazonium solution was treated with cuprous chloride and sulfur dioxide to give the sulfonyl chloride which was hydrolyzed to the sulfonate. The subject treated in this paper is a segment of the early Utah story. It is a study of the activities of the Mormon leader Brigham Young in the southwestern Utah community of St. George. Oakley is located in southern Idaho in the Goose Creek Valley, an area traversed by trappers and explorers who named the streams and left accounts of their experiences and travels. It was a rendezvous for Indians who went there to gather pine nuts and get wild game for their winter's meat.

The first missionary for the Church was Samuel Harrison Smith, who was sent by his brother Joseph Smith to sell The Book of Mormon in the area of Livonia, New York. Elder Orson Pratt preached the first sermon outside of the United States, and because many of the listeners had relatives in England, the Church was able to introduce its message to the people of Great Britain. The problem of this study was two-fold: first, to determine the accomplishments of the Utah Territorial Indian Superintendency during Brigham Young's term in office; and second, to study the difficulties which hindered this superintendency from functioning in a manner which would be most beneficial to the Indian people. These difficulties fit into three major groups: friction within the superintendency, Indian depredations, and lack of cooperation on the part of the Federal Government.
