During recent years an increasing number of technical firms and manufacturers have begun to specify heat flux, energy input per unit area per unit time, as a testing and designing criteria. This change in the boundary condition (to heat flux from temperature excess or others) evolved from the idea that each material has a characteristic burning temperature. Therefore, the rate of ablation or burning depends mainly upon the rate of energy input into the specimen, and not its temperature. Thus, the need for a flux measuring device became more acute.

In order to analyse the radiant heat transfer characteristics of a concave source, two vital concepts must be clearly understood. The first is called the apparent emissivity Ea and is a function of both the local total emissivity E and of the geometry of the source. Ecology Of Summer Aquatic Invertebrate Populations In A Marsh Area Of Utah Lake, David A. White

Mud Lake marsh lies east of Utah Lake between the cities of Provo and Springville in Utah County. Since 1936 it has become a polluted, odiferous, silted area. A study was conducted on the aquatic invertebrates during the summer of 1962 (June 19 to September 20). An .01 meter2 bottom sampler was used at 30 random stations. Each station was sampled once a week. Water depth, mud, water and air temperatures were taken at each station. Dissolved oxygen (Winkler method) and ion resistance (Wheatstone bridge) were taken each day. The aquatic invertebrate community consisted of benthic (Diptera, Oligochaeta, Nematoda), interphashic …

One very important part of research is the development of effective, reliable instruments. The measurement of turbulence in flow fields is a complex research problem. It depends heavily upon the hot-wire anemometer. This thesis describes the evaluation and use of a constant- current hot-wire anemometer, and presents the equations governing its use for turbulence measurements. The thesis first enumerates and explains some of the important parameters of turbulent flows, providing the basis for the discussion of their measurement which follows. The object of this work was to design and build equipment to measure the aerodynamic forces which will cause self-induced oscillations of a body having an unsymmetrical cross-section, such as a D-section. This self-induced oscillation has been called "stall flutter" or in electrical transmission lines, "galloping-transmission lines." It is hoped that this equipment will be used to gain basic Information about these aerodynamic forces.

In the desert areas of southwestern United States the Coleoptera, family Tenebrionidae, constitute a conspicuous part of the ground-dwelling insects. Most species are black or dull chestnut-brown. They are primarily nocturnal and during the day can be found under rocks, debris, loose bark, or in rodent burrows. On cloudy days they may be seen lumbering along the desert floor. Most tenebrionids feed on plant materials of various sorts. In August, 1959, Brigham Young University initiated an ecological study at the Nevada Test Site near Mercury in Nye County, Nevada. The purpose of this study was to compare the morphology of the hind limb of the pocket gopher with that of the kangaroo rat and to determine their differences. This was accomplished by first, obtaining the specimens; second, preparation of the specimens for preservation and dissection; third, photographing and tracing the muscles; fourth, noting the origin and insertion of each muscle and their general morphology; and fifth, preparation and photographing of the bones. ΔH values for the formation of Ni(CN)4(aq)= have been determined calorimetrically at 25° using a simple calorimeter and a thermometric titration procedure at high and low ionic strengths, respectively. Extrapolation of these ΔH values to infinite dilution resulted in a ΔH° value of -42.7 kcal./mole. Combination of ΔH° and ΔF° values gives a ΔS° value of -5.5 e.u. for Ni(CN)4(aq)= formation. A value of +70 e.u. is calculated for the ionic entropy of Ni(CN)4(aq)=. A preliminary investigation of the Zn(CN)4(aq)= system indicated the existence of zinc cyanide complexes other than Zn(CN)4= and allowed calculation of an approximate ΔH° value of …

The objectives of this study were 1) to further clarify the status of the genera Polydrusus and Scythropus and 2) to redescribe and elucidate the morphology and distribution of the species of Scythropus in order to better facilitate their identification. Some 1650 specimens were used in the study and about 300 of these were critically examined for morphological variations of the head, beak, antennae, thorax, elytra, abdomen, integument, legs, genitalia, and eighth tergite and ninth segment of the male. Over one hundred genitalia were dissected and critically examined for good characters. The male genitalia were the most reliable single characters …

The parasitic mites on mammals living in the chaparral community of Utah are practically unknown ecologically. Keegan (1953) was the first to publish on parasitic mites from Utah. He listed mites of 12 species and 9 genera from Tooele and Juab counties from hosts which included one Peromyscus truei, five P. crinitus, and 20 P. maniculatus. Brennan and Beck (1955) published on the chiggers of Utah and included a key to 38 species. Allred (1954, 1956, 1957, 1958) studied the geographical distribution, seasonal occurrence, and biology of mites found on mice of the genus Peromyscus in Utah.

Agropyron trachycaulum (Link) Malte and Agropyron spicatum Pursh, both native range grasses of the Great Basin, often hybridize in nature. A. trachycaulum, is a tetraploid with 28 chromosomes. It has awnless or awntipped lemmas and small anthers. A. spicatum is a diplois with 14 chromosomes. It is characterized by having long awn that bend at maturity, and anthers which are about four times longer than A. trachycaulum. Artificial hybrids are intermediate between parents in awn and anther lengths and have 21 chromosomes. A natural population in Utah was found consisting of A. trachycaulum, A. spicatum, plants resembling the artificial hybrids, …
