The Controlled Oxidation Of Leonardite, Vijay R. Purandare

The controlled oxidation or dissolved leonardite was carried out in a heated autoclave under elevated oxygen pressure. Oxidation was carried out in order to increase the acidity oi: leonardite and obtain higher humic acid yields. The solvent was an aqueous solution of sodium hydroxide in the range of concentrations from 1% to 8%. The reaction temperature was varied from 25°C to 125°C; the pressure was kept at 500 psig and reaction time was constant at one hour. The product was analyzed both for carboxylic acid and for hydroxyl groups.

This Thesis was an examination of those persons receiving that form of vrolfc.ro assistanco known as general assistance in terms of the concepts of anomie and social participation. Tho act of receiving general assistanco was presented as a behavioral response contrary to the normative expectations of tho American society. It was hypothesized that general assistanco recipients are more anomic and participate less in society than those low income person not seeking or receiving welfare assistance. It was further hypothesized that chronic general assistance recipients are more anomic and participate loss in society than those recipients relatively loss relient upon assistance. …

Investigation On The Performance Characteristics Of Two Valveless Pulse Jets Operating In Phase Opposition, Donald A. Moen

The investigation was suggested by an earlier investigation done on a single valveless pulse jet engine at the University of North Dakota by Roger W. Engebretson. It was thought that if two of these engines could be coupled in such a manner that they would fire alternatively, the performance per engine could be improved. A literature search indicated that, while valved pulse jets had been successfully operated in the described manner, no one had previously operated two valveless pulse jet engines in phase opposition.

The problem was to determine the frequency and nature of injuries sustained by students in athletics and in physical education classes in grades seven through twelve in the Grand Forks Public School System from 1960-1965. Data were gathered from the school accident fund claim sheets which were kept at the office of the North Dakota High School Activities Association and at the secondary schools 1n Grand Forks.

Of the 307 reported Injuries during the five years, 142 were sustained during physical education classes and 140 during athletic competition. The remaining 25 injuries occurred in classrooms and in other school facilities. …

The Weberian mechanisms of three Utah Lake suckers (Catostomidae: Catostominae; Catostomini), Catostomus fecundus Cope and Yarrow, Chasmistes liorus Jordan, and Catostomus ardens Jordan and Gilbert, were examined, described, and compared, and a statistical analysis was made of some of their more important differences. The mechanisms were found to be basically similar to one another and to those of other Catostomini as previously described and/or illustrated. They are individually distinct, but each varies within its own limits, the intraspecific variation being greatest in the wider-ranging Catostomus ardens and least in the seemingly most restricted Catostomus fecundus. Refinements In The Isomer Distribution And Relative Rate Of Sulfonation Of Toluene And Hydrochlorination Of Olefins With Stannic Chloride Catalyst, David George Guillot

The sulfonation of toluene at -12.5° C. with sulfur trioxide in liquid sulfur dioxide was found to give 10.03 ± 0.20 % ortho, 0.73 ± 0.20 % meta and 89.24 ± 0.20 % para isomers. This isomer distribution was determined by isotope dilution analysis using sulfur-35 enriched sulfur trioxide. After dilution of aliquots of the neutralized sulfonation mixture with pure sodium salts of each of the isomers prepared from the corresponding toluidines, the isomers were converted to the p-toluidine salts, purified by recrystallization, and counted by liquid scintillation counting. The objectives of this study were to determine (1) the prevalence of adult ticks of Dermacentor andersoni in national forest recreational sites of Utah, and (2) the incidence of spotted fever rickettsia, Rickettsia rickettsii, in the ticks of these areas. With the use of a white flannel cloth, 358 adult D. andersoni (135 males and 223 females) were collected from 48 recreational sites during the spring and summer of 1964. Ticks from each collection were put in pools, preserved in non-fat skim milk at -30° C, and subsequently tested for the presence of spotted fever rickettsia by guinea pig inoculations. …

While a number of short articles and histories of Silver Reef have been written, they tend either to be anecdotal in character or to emphasize the merely sensational aspects of the mining camp. These writings have failed to investigate some of the most basic sources of information concerning this highly interesting mining epic in Southern Utah. Therefore, there remains a real need for a thoroughly researched and documented history of silver Reef - a need that this thesis tries to meet.

Prominent in the pioneering and settlement of early Utah were many men of great ability. Among them was Levi Ward Hancock. He became a dedicated spiritual leader in the Mormon Church.

The life of Levi Hancock began in Springfield, Massachusetts, on April 7, 1803. His father moved about quite often in his attempts to provide a better livelihood for his family. Each move took them farther west. It was while they were living in Ohio that the Hancock family heard the Mormon missionaries preach their new gospel. Levi joined this frontier religion.

In the late 1870's, missionary successes in the southern states prompted the search for a location to which the new converts could migrate and establish their homes among the Saints in "Zion." The area eventually decided upon for the location of the southern converts was the San Luis Valley, in southern Colorado. Patrick Edward Connor was a military officer who was given the duty of guarding the overland mail route in the West during the civil war. In addition to this he was to watch the Mormons in Utah and determine their loyalty to the government of the United States. He was the commander of the Military District of Utah and he established his headquarters at Camp Douglas which was near Salt Lake City, Utah.

Previous studies have indicated that the moral development of the child may follow a "developmental" process. That is, the child progresses through an invariant series of stages, each characterized by certain modes of thought. As the child passes from one stage to another, he integrates the old stage into the new one. Kohlberg proposed a hierarchy of six stages through which the child would progress on his way to moral maturity. His hypothesis has been supported by empirical evidence.
