The Production Of Activated Carbon From North Dakota Leonardite, Donald E. Schroeder Jr. Jan 1969

The Production Of Activated Carbon From North Dakota Leonardite, Donald E. Schroeder Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The utilization of leonardite for the production of granular activated carbons was investigated. In granular activated carbons it is desirable to have hard dense granules to permit use without excessive disintegration. Two methods were used to modify the leonardite structure in order to obtain better granules. In one method the leonardite was put into colloidal suspension with certain alkalis. Chemicals were then added to the suspension. The additives used were calcium hydroxide, phosphoric acid, and calcium carbonate. This material was then granulated by drying. The second method for preparing granules consisted in pelletizing powdered leonardite in a rotary drum using …

An Ecologic Study Of An Overloaded Oxidation Lagoon Containing High Populations Of Purple Sulfur Bacteria, Harvey W. Holm Jan 1969

An Ecologic Study Of An Overloaded Oxidation Lagoon Containing High Populations Of Purple Sulfur Bacteria, Harvey W. Holm

Theses and Dissertations

Concomitant with the addition of large amounts of potato starch wastes to the Grafton, North Dakota, municipal sewage lagoon was the development of a new major microbial population, the purple sulfur bacteria. This study attempts to define ecologic relationships of the lagoon, with special emphasis placed on the action of purple sulfur bacteria in the lagoon.

Chemical changes in the lagoon were investigated by monitoring Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), sulfide, sulfate, phosphate, pyruvate, total carbohydrates, volatile acids, alkalinity, and pH. Lagoon water temperatures were observed daily. Microbial ecologic relationships were deduced by enumerating coliforms, fecal conforms, enterococci, total bacteria (TGE …

Removal Of Sulfur Oxides From Synthetic Flue Gas By Lignite Fly Ash, Ellen Bernard Lukes Jan 1969

Removal Of Sulfur Oxides From Synthetic Flue Gas By Lignite Fly Ash, Ellen Bernard Lukes

Theses and Dissertations

The absorption of sulfur dioxide from a synthetic flue gas by fly ash was investigatedo Tests were made by passing a flue gas mixture of known composition over various samples of lignite fly ash and then analyzing the samples by means of x~ray fluorescence

The significance of time, temperature, partial pressure of sulfur dioxide in the flue gas, and the composition of the ash was determined by statistical analysis„ Analysis of variance indicated that the four variables studied all had a significant effect on the amount of sulfur dioxide absorbed by the fly ash at the 99o5 percent confidence level,, …

The Cubist Aesthetic Theories Of Pictorial Representation: An Analysis Of The Component Structure Of An Object To Create An Interior Reality, Sharon Lee Duvall Jan 1969

The Cubist Aesthetic Theories Of Pictorial Representation: An Analysis Of The Component Structure Of An Object To Create An Interior Reality, Sharon Lee Duvall

Theses and Dissertations

This paper is primarily an analysis of the Cubistic attitude toward pictorial reality. The project includes a study of form and structure in the Cubists* searoh for a conceptual reality. Twelve paintings of the author are presented each with explanations which reveal several similarities to Cubist thinking.

Some attention has been given to analytical and synthetic Cubism as well as to certain fundamentals of the movement. However, both a historical approach and biographical studies have been ignored. Because art is an aesthetic, this paper is not a problem- result type of study but an analysis in support of Cubism as …

History Of Norwegian-Language Publications In North Dakota, Odd S. Lovoll Jan 1969

History Of Norwegian-Language Publications In North Dakota, Odd S. Lovoll

Theses and Dissertations

The thesis endeavors to give the history of Norwegian-language publications in North Dakota. The first paper, Red River posten, was established in 1878 and the last paper, Visergutten, was discontinued in 1955, only a few months after the main Norwegian organ in the state, Normanden, stopped publication. In this period there were fifty-six ventures, counting both the secular and the religious papers.

The Norwegian-American press concentrated in the three or four commercial centers in the Red River Valley. The majority of the papers were short-lived; only a few of them could celebrate even their decennial. They had a relatively small …
