A random sample of one hundred Iowa high schools was used in the study. Letters were sent to administrators of the schools to collect achievement scores for all varsity football letter winners and the conference team record. An average composite score was figured for each team, as was the team percentage of wins. A correlation …

A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder Aug 1971

A Methodological Comparison Of Interview And Behavioral Techniques For Assessment Of Conservation Of Length, Richard E. Harder

Theses and Dissertations

Piaget (1929) contends that a verbal interview is the only procedure which is flexible enough to follow and examine the development of cognitive processes in children. However verbal methods are inconsistent with the suggestion by Piaget (1951, 1963) and several colleagues (Furth, 1964, 1966; Sinclair-de-Zwart, 1969) that language merely reflects underlying cognitive processes, and is not a source of logical development. In addition verbal methods allow for verbal misunderstandings by both subjects and experimenters, provide for experimenter bias and may foster response sets.

To minimize these theoretical and methodological difficulties, several investigations (e.g., Braine, 1959, 1962; Sawda & Nelson, 1968) …

Environmental Factors That Influence The Timing Of A Cyclic En Masse Foraging Migration Of Ligia Occidentalis Dana (Crustacea: Isopoda) On The Northern Gulf Of California, J. Wanless Southwick

Theses and Dissertations

En masse foraging migrations of Ligia occidentalis Dana were conspicuous events on rocky beaches near Puerto Peñasco, Sonora, Mexico. Experiments were conducted to determine which factors of the environment contained the regulating rhythm for the migration, if indeed the event were cyclic. Experiments were conducted in the laboratory using a tide-simulation aquarium and in the field using mark and release techniques. A time-lapse photography system was used in the field to quantify isopod activity for comparison with environmental factors. A regular cycle for the foraging migration was found. It was in tune with both insolation and tidal cycles so that …

Effects Of Ionizing Radiations On Mite Populations At The Nevada Test Site, Richard Riddle Walker Aug 1971

Effects Of Ionizing Radiations On Mite Populations At The Nevada Test Site, Richard Riddle Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Population and community studies dealing with radiation stress have essentially neglected the mites. When references have been made to the responses of mite populations to ionizing radiation, the form of radiation has almost always been gamma. This study reports results of naturally occurring populations of desert mites, at the Nevada Test Site, to ionizing radiation--largely beta. Eighteen species groups were identified from Berlese samples and tested for stress responses with species diversity indices and analyses of variations in predator-prey ratios. General agreement with previous studies showed a decreasing pattern in these two tests within the controls. This was interpreted as …

Breakdown occurred in the following was: (1) maceration of the middle lamella before maceration of the cell wall, (2) simultaneous degradation of both the middle lamella and the cell wall, (3) maceration …

Studies Of Pig Brain Thiamin Pyrophosphokinase, James Weldon Peterson Aug 1971

Studies Of Pig Brain Thiamin Pyrophosphokinase, James Weldon Peterson

Theses and Dissertations

Pig brain thiamin pyrophosphokinase (TPK) (ATP: thiamin pyrophosphotransferase, EC 2.7.6.2) was purified 260-fold over extracts of brain acetone powder. The purification was followed using a direct, radiometric assay. As determined in an analytical ultracentrifuge and by disc-gel electrophoresis, the most highly purified enzyme preparations were not homogeneous. The purified enzyme has a broad pH optimum extending from 8.3 to 9.3 in phosphate-glycylglycine buffer. It has an isoelectric point at about pH 4.2. For optimal enzymatic activity, the ratio of magnesium to ATP must be 0.6. Any deviation from this ratio causes a rapid drop in enzymatic activity. A study of …

Examination Of Some Variables In Relation To Perceived Locus Of Control, Jerome Irwin Weiss Jun 1971

Examination Of Some Variables In Relation To Perceived Locus Of Control, Jerome Irwin Weiss

Theses and Dissertations

Several studies indicate that the Internal Locus of Control Scale (Rotter, 1962) may also be an indicator of concern or anxiety.

The present study was designed to assess whether IE and task variable manipulation would be reflected in physiological and decision time measurements. The specific dependent variables chosen were blood pressure, pulse rate, respiration rate and decision time. Past evidence suggests that E's are more anxious than I’s, and that anxiety is reflected by a decrease in blood pressure. Evidence also points to the possibility that the other dependent variables considered are affected by IE and task manipulation, although not …

An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton May 1971

An Analysis Of Cattle Grazing On Steep Slopes, William Wayne Patton

Theses and Dissertations

A field study was made to correlate cattle grazing patterns of steep terrain with the rest-rotation grazing system. Line-plot transects were positioned across each of three heavily grazed, steep canyons. The rest-rotation system as practiced on the Gooding Cattle Allotment is resulting in good forage use as the animals are grazing forage on slopes up to 60%. Level contour trails extending across slope faces made it possible for cattle to graze on steep slopes at distances up to 80 chains from water. Contour trails originate at watering loctions; hence better distribution of water could be expected to result in better …

Solid-Liquid Phase Equilibria Studies :|Bi. Several Charge Transfer Systems ; Ii. A Metallic System ; Iii. A Liquid Crystal, Dee Edward Oyler

Theses and Dissertations

Solid-liquid phase equilibria studies were used to investigate possible compound formation in solutions of (i) N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) and (ii) N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) with a series of halogenated hydrocarbons that were selected to give a wide range of acceptor properties. Solid 1:1 intermolecular compounds were identified from solutions of (i) DMF and (ii) DMA with CCl_4, CBrCl_3, and C_6H_5CCl_3. The intermolecular compounds (DMF)_2•CCl_4 and (DMF)_2•CBrCl_3 were also found. The results suggest charge transfer from DMF or DMA to the chlorine atoms of the acceptor molecule as the process for compound formation. Thermal methods were used to determine with high precision the solid-liquid …

The Physiological Vitality Of Scarlet Globemallow, Sphaeralcea Grossulariaefolia (Hook. And Arn.) Rydberg, Under Drought, Sam Finley Brewster

Theses and Dissertations

Responses to drought were studied on greenhouse grown plants of Sphaeralcea grossulariaefolia (Hook. & Arn.) Rydberg. A pressure bomb was modified to measure leaf water potential (ψ). Leaf water potentials varied from -2 to -80 bars. Matric potential proved negligible. Low osmotic potentials indicated that turgor pressure remained positive. Photosynthesis decreased linearily with leaf water potential decreases. At about -32 bars ψ net photosynthesis became zero and around -45 bars ψ all photosynthesis ceased. Dark respiration decreased below about -18 bars proportionally to leaf water potential decrease until becoming minute at -60 bars. A very rapid rise in CO2 equilibrium …

A discussion of the errors involved in the determination of ΔH° from the temperature dependence of log K values is also included. Comparisons are made between the results of this study and those of a similar study by H. K. Frensdorff, E. I. …

Task And Socioemotional Interaction As Contexts Affecting The Agreement-Attraction Relationship, William D. Wittman May 1971

Task And Socioemotional Interaction As Contexts Affecting The Agreement-Attraction Relationship, William D. Wittman

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of the research supports the hypothesis that agreement is a major variable in attraction, but several recent studies have shown other conditions may also be important. Following Wright's (1969a) friendship model, Wright and Crawford (1969) have shown that males are oriented toward both "task" and "social-emotional" situations, while females are oriented primarily toward "social- emotional" situations. The present study was designed to investigate the role of agreement within these two situational variables. It was hypothesized that, for males in a task situation, agreement would yield greater attraction than disagreement. For females, greater attraction was predicted for agreeing pairs …

Acoustical Communication In The Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Louis Henry Kermott Iii May 1971

Acoustical Communication In The Sharp-Tailed Grouse, Louis Henry Kermott Iii

Theses and Dissertations

The Sharp-tailed Grouse has evolved a highly complex system of visual and acoustical signals due to increased social interactions necessary with the predator pressure of an exposed environment. The first portion of the spring mating season is primarily involved with establishment and defense of territories. Predominant acoustical signals are aggressive, highly ritualized, and involved in individual location and recognition. During mid-season females visit the lek, are courted by males, and copulations occur. Acoustical signals are concerned with attracting and stimulating females, vary on a time and frequency continuum, and are thus not as highly ritualized. During the last portion of …
