Muscular Strength, Muscular Endurance, And Circulorespiratory Endurance Of University Of North Dakota Varsity Wrestlers During The 1970-71 Season, Robert E. Stiles
Theses and Dissertations
This study was conducted to establish those changes which occurred in muscular strength, muscular endurance, and circulorespiratory endurance over a one season period. Pre-season, pre-Christmas, post-Christmas, and post-season tests were administered to eleven University of North Dakota varsity wrestlers. The tests included the twelve minute run-walk, used to measure circulorespiratory endurance, and two weight training lifts—the bench press and the prone row, used to measure muscular strength and endurance. Each of the lifts was administered to test muscular responses four ways: static strength, static endurance, dynamic strength, and dynamic endurance.

A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam
A Guide For The Teaching Of Vocal Technique In The High School Chorus, David A. Quam
Theses and Dissertations
In general, high school choruses do not reach their potential as far as choral tone is concerned. The tone is generally characterized by either a completely undisciplined and labored sound or a pseudo "mature" sound imposed upon the students by a director seeking to emulate his college choir.
When high school choruses sing freely and naturally, they do so because they are taught and inspired to do so by their director. Therefore, the director must understand the concepts of correct singing and must have in his possession practical techniques that will develop a program of correct singing in the high …

Analysis Of The Election Of 1896 In North Dakota, Roger Milton Klimpel
Analysis Of The Election Of 1896 In North Dakota, Roger Milton Klimpel
Theses and Dissertations
The treatment of the election of 1896 has invoked no uniform opinion among historians. The general works as well as the more localized studies have centered around urban-rural differences, voting i patterns, and issues. This study follows the course of political events in North Dakota's election of 1896, through the use of newspapers, public documents, and contemporary writings.
Fusion elements failed in their attempts to wrestle the government away from Republicans. Democratic-Populist forces faced a well- entrenched, well-organized and well-financed Republican party. Fusionists centered their campaign on the narrow silver issue. The Republicans circumvented the money question and successfully played …
Waiting For Godot: A Directorial Approach, Kenneth M. Maciula
Waiting For Godot: A Directorial Approach, Kenneth M. Maciula
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis is a recreation of the process of directing Waiting for Godot. It is a practical approach dealing with the co-ordination of all aspects of the production as experienced by this director. The technique and theories involved in the production are reviewed herein and related to the actual process of directing the play. This thesis is intended to be useful to directors or those interested in the process, rather than the theory of directing.
Included in the thesis are a theoretical approach to Waiting for Godot, the directorial philosophy employed in the production, and an analysis of the success …
Instrumentality Of Aggression And Strength And Arbitrariness Of Frustration Related To Direct Physical Aggression, Robert J. Thompson Jr.
Instrumentality Of Aggression And Strength And Arbitrariness Of Frustration Related To Direct Physical Aggression, Robert J. Thompson Jr.
Theses and Dissertations
Study of the factors influencing the occurrence of aggression received impetus from the frustration-aggression hypothesis of 1939. It was hypothesized that aggression was the primary consequence of frustration, and that the stronger the frustration, the stronger the aggression. Numerous studies have shown that frustration can lead to aggression v/ith organisms ranging along the phylogenetic scale from rats to humans. While questionnaire studies have shown that the strength of aggression varies v/ith the strength of frustration, this has not been verified in laboratory studies of direct physical aggression.
Recently, the importance of situational variables, such as the perceived arbitrariness of the …
Studies On The Mutual Influences Of Substrates On Mammalian Alpha-Keto Acid Metabolism, Wayne A. Johnson
Studies On The Mutual Influences Of Substrates On Mammalian Alpha-Keto Acid Metabolism, Wayne A. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine are transaminated to their respective a-keto acid analogues; a-keto- isocaproate (KIC) a-keto-p-methyIvalerate (KMV) and a-ketoiso- valerate (KIV) in normal mammalian tissues. Recently an interest in the genetic anomaly "branched-chain ketoaciduria" or "maple syrup urine disease", a metabolic disease involving the oxidative decarboxylation of the three branched-chain CC-keto acids, has stimulated efforts to characterize the nature of the enzymic conversions leading from the a-keto acids to their acyl coenzyme A products. These studies have been extended toward a consideration of the metabolic interrelationships among these a-keto acids (KIC, KMV, KIV). Furthermore, the effects …

Space Usage By The Small Mammal, Dipodomys Microps (Merriam), Barney William Cornaby
Theses and Dissertations
The concept of home range is an important biological phenomenon and has received considerable attention. In applying the concept to mammals Burt (1943) defined it as, "that area traversed by the individual in its normal activities of food getting, mating, and caring for young. " Later, Hayne (1949) defined a circular home range with concentric zones of variable utilization around a center of activity. Both workers emphasized the need to know the behavior patterns of the animals within their respective home ranges. The statistical evaluation initiated by Hayne (1949) has been refined to provide increasingly precise probability estimates of an …
The Thermal Decomposition Of 2,2'-Azoisobutane, Mervin Dewain Atwood
The Thermal Decomposition Of 2,2'-Azoisobutane, Mervin Dewain Atwood
Theses and Dissertations
Nitrogen, isobutane, isobutylene and 2,2,3,3-tetramethylbutane are the only products found in the thermal decomposition of 2,2'-azoisobutane. They are the results of the direct free radical dimerization and disproportionation. Ratio of the rate constants of disproportionation to dimerization was found to be 1.9 at 268°C and 4.5% azobutane in helium. This compared with Blackham and Eatough's value of 1.4 at 243°C and 3.6 at 290°C with 4% azobutane in helium. The ratio of the disproportionation to dimerization increased with an increase in temperature. A change in contact time affected the ratio at lower reaction temperatures but had little effect on it …
An Investigation Of Some Free Radicals.|Ni.|Pdecomposition Of Nitrosyl Disulfonate Ion In Polar Non-Aqueous Solvents.|Nii.|Preaction Between 2,2-Diphenyl -1- Picryl Hydrazyl And Nitrosyl Disulfonate Ion Free Radicals, Janan Mary Hayes
Theses and Dissertations
Part I reports the stud y of the decomposition of nitrosyl disulfonate ion in DMSO, acetonitrile, and dichloromethane. A multi-step mechanism involving sulfite ion, sulfite ion radical, and nitrosyl monosulfonate radical as intermediates is proposed. The products of the decomposition are nitrosonium ion, hydroxylamine disulfonate ion, and hydroxylamine trisulfonate ion. A competitive chain reaction was observed when the decomposition occurred in DMSO. The chain reaction was insignificant in carefully dried acetonitrile and dichloromethane. Part II reports the study of the reaction between 2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) and nitrosyl disulfonate ion. Product analysis and kinetic data obtained from stopped-flow procedures suggest that …
Autoradiographic Studies Of The Distribution Of Serotonin In The Rat Brain, Brent D. Wagstaff
Autoradiographic Studies Of The Distribution Of Serotonin In The Rat Brain, Brent D. Wagstaff
Theses and Dissertations
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), considered to be a synaptic transmitter within the central nervous system, has been shown to be localized mainly in the paleocortex of the brain. Others have shown disturbances of normal 5-HT metabolism to be associated with mental illness and disease. Attempts to inject tritium labelled 5-HT into cerebrospinal fluid of the rat brain for anatomical localization studies were·made. The following observations were noted, (1) there exists a perivascular space in which fluid flows and distribution is relatively uninhibited as compared to subarachnoid space, (2) the labelled 5-HT penetration of brain tissue parenchyma is restricted and radioactivity is …
Predatory Activity Of Chrysopa Carnea Stephens In The Integrated Control Of Mite Pests In Utah Apple Orchards, Ray R. Bingham
Predatory Activity Of Chrysopa Carnea Stephens In The Integrated Control Of Mite Pests In Utah Apple Orchards, Ray R. Bingham
Theses and Dissertations
Mite pest problems in Utah apple orchards became generally serious about 1944, when DDT was first used extensively to control Codling moths, Carpocapsa pomonella (Linn.) (Jorgensen, 1967}. Since then several investigators (Pickett et al., 1946; Lord, 1949; Pickett, 1955; Lord, Herbert, and MacPhee, 1958) have examined the influence of various spray programs on apple orchard fauna, while still others (Clancy and Pollard, 1952; Morgan, Anderson, and Swales, 1958; Oat-man and Legner, 1962) have conducted related studies with widely used broad spectrum pesticides on apple mites and their predators. All seem to lend credence to the theory that mite pest problems …
Effect Of Exercise On Tissue Concentrations Of Thyroid Hormones And On Thyroxine Degradation Rate In The Rat, William W. Winder
Effect Of Exercise On Tissue Concentrations Of Thyroid Hormones And On Thyroxine Degradation Rate In The Rat, William W. Winder
Theses and Dissertations
Several methods were used to detect changes in thyroid activity and in degradation of thyroxine (T4) in exercising and sedentary control rats. Rats were run in a motor-driven exercise wheel over a three-week period at progressively increasing work loads and then were run 1.5-2 hours per day for 10-14 days before sacrifice. Disappearance of injected T4-125I from plasma was considerably enhanced by exercise. As determined by isotopic equilibration and paper chromatographic methods, T4 concentration was depressed in plasma and elevated in liver of exercised rats. No significant changes in T4 concentration were observed in heart, kidney, or gastrocnemius muscle. Thyroidal …
A Comparative Morphological Study Of Bryobia Rubrioculus (Scheuten) (Acarina: Tetranychidae), Robert Lee Frommer
A Comparative Morphological Study Of Bryobia Rubrioculus (Scheuten) (Acarina: Tetranychidae), Robert Lee Frommer
Theses and Dissertations
A comparative morphological study of Bryobia rubrioculus {Scheuten} from 24 worldwide sites was made to determine if enough significant variation existed to designate the mites from each locale as an isolated population. Forty-seven characters were then selected and measured for each mite and analyzed with Ward's error sum cluster analysis procedures. These analyses led to the conclusion that: {1} B. rubrioculus tends to form distinct populations within each respective locale, and mites from locales that did not form clusters are possibly a result of automictic parthenogenesis and introductions from other areas; {2} B. rubrioculus is distinctly separate from Bryobia praetiosa …
A Pectin Histochemical Study Of The Host Pathogen Relationship Between Pyrenochaeta Terrestris And Allium Cepa, Leroy Richard Cobia
A Pectin Histochemical Study Of The Host Pathogen Relationship Between Pyrenochaeta Terrestris And Allium Cepa, Leroy Richard Cobia
Theses and Dissertations
The involvement of pectin and pectinases in the host pathogen interaction of P. terrestris and Allium cepa were investigated by use of pectin histochemical stains at the electron microscope level. Several different pectin histochemical stains were used, but only two (the hydroxylamine reaction, and the pectin stain developed in this study) gave reliable results. It was observed that by the time the fungus has reached the host cell wall pectinesterase and endoplygalacturonase have fully removed the pectin from the host cell wall. When this has occurred, cellulases are released which continue to degrade the host cell wall. Electron transparent areas …

Prey Utilization By Nesting Golden Eagles In (Aquila Chrysaertos) In Central Utah, William Bruce Arnell
Theses and Dissertations
During the spring of 1969 and 1970, 28 Golden Eagle eyries in four locales in central Utah were observed to determine the prey utilized during the nesting season. Visits were made every two weeks to the eyries. Prey were removed from the nests upon counting to avoid recounting at the next visit. Sixteen species of vertebrates were found as prey for nesting Golden Eagles. Mammals comprised 96 per cent of the prey, and lagomorphs alone accounted for 92 per cent. The blacktail jackrabbit occurred as 77.8 per cent of all prey items. Avian species constituted 3.9 per cent of prey …

Henry Fielding's The Mock Doctor: Or The Dumb Lady Cur'd And The Miser: A Critical Edition, Marti J. Brewerton
Henry Fielding's The Mock Doctor: Or The Dumb Lady Cur'd And The Miser: A Critical Edition, Marti J. Brewerton
Theses and Dissertations
Henry Fielding is more widely known as a novelist than a playwright. Except for Tom Thumb, his dramatic works are largely ignored. And yet many of these plays enjoyed great success in Fielding's time. This edition presents a critical, old-style text of two of Fielding's most popular plays, both of which are adaptations of Molière: The Mock Doctor; or the Dumb Lady Cur'd, taken from Le Médecin Malgré Lui, and The Miser, taken from L'Avare. Each play is presented in the form which represents as nearly as possible Fielding's final intentions, so far as can be …

A Determination And Evaluation Of Pre-Clinical Competencies: The Opinions Of Student Teachers, Cooperating Teachers, And Progressional Educators, Roger W. C. Rasmussen
Theses and Dissertations
Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study was twofold: (1) to determine specific competencies student teachers should possess prior to the start of the clinical experience, (2) to determine how well prepared student teachers are in these competencies. These determinations were based on the opinions of University of North Dakota secondary student teachers who completed their clinical experience during the Fall 1970, the opinions of their cooperating teachers, and the opinions of selected faculty from the College of Education at the University of North Dakota.
The research was concerned with generating answers to the following questions:
1. In …

A Study In Political Attitudes And Activism Of North Dakota Clergymen, Gary K. Malm
Theses and Dissertations
The intent of this paper was to examine some of the attitudes and actions of the North Dakota clergymen toward politics and specific political issues. The specific political actions which were studied were voting behavior, participation in protest marches and demonstrations, and active campaigning for a political candidate or party. The attitudes which were studied were with regard to the rating of the Supreme Court of the United States, pari-mutual betting in North Dakota, following laws which one considered to be morally wrong, conscientious objection to specific wars, and the use of the pulpit for statements of personal political beliefs. …
Interstimulus Intervals In Conditioned Suppression, John Oliver Kling
Interstimulus Intervals In Conditioned Suppression, John Oliver Kling
Theses and Dissertations
Conditioned suppression describes the attenuation of an ongoing operant (e.g., lever press or key peck) when a warning stimulus precedes unavoidable electric shock. First reported by Estes and Skinner (1941), the procedure has been refined by Kamin (1961, 1965) and other investigators (Geller, 1963, 1964; Hunt and Brady, 1955; and James and Mostoway, 1968). Although many of the parameters of conditioned suppression have been evaluated, relatively little attention has been given to interstimulus intervals. In the only parametric study of interstimulus intervals, Libby (1951) investigated seven short intervals ranging from 0 to 30 seconds. He reported that suppression increased as …
