Theses and Dissertations

The Ridge Basin, 90 km northwest of Los Angeles, California, lies within the San Gabriel, San Andreas, Liebre, and Clearwater fault zones. The basin is an elongated, wedge-shaped, intermontane, Miocene-Pliocene basin filled with about 12 000 m of marine, lacustrine, fluvial, and alluvial sediment. More than half of the thickness of the Ridge Route "formation" and about one fifth of the Peace Valley "beds" was examined for molluscs along the northeastern side of the basin and more than 600 m of section were measured.

The nonmarine molluscs of the Ridge Route "formation" and Peace Valley "beds" consist of ten species: …

Periglacial Landforms And Processes In The Southern Kenai Mountains, Alaska, Palmer K. Bailey

Theses and Dissertations

The distribution and characteristics of periglacial landforms in the southern Kenai Mountains, Alaska, were investigated during the summer of 1979. The principal area of study was a 1300-metre high mountain mass which stood as a nunatak during the last general glaciation. Periglacial features in the area include gelifluction lobes, nivation hollows, cryoplanation terraces, tors, a string bog, and various for111S of patterned ground such as sorted circles, sorted polygons, earth hummocks, sorted steps, sorted stripes, and small ice-wedge polygons.

Ground temperature measurements indicate that permafrost recently existed in the area but is no longer present. The sorted polygons, cryoplsnation terraces, …

Biographical, Self Concept And Educational Factors Among Youth Referred To A Chemical Dependency Treatment Program., Linda Ann Svobodny Jan 1980

Biographical, Self Concept And Educational Factors Among Youth Referred To A Chemical Dependency Treatment Program., Linda Ann Svobodny

Theses and Dissertations

Problem. Recently the trend of chemical use by increasingly more and younger adolescents has become recognized as a potentially serious societal problem. National studies have found significant proportions of adolescents who use a variety of chemicals frequently and heavily (Alibrandi 1978; Johnston, Bachman & O'Malley 1979). Although drug use and abuse have clearly been documented in the literature as a serious problem for the adolescent population, there is little conclusive evidence of why some adolescents abuse drugs and others do not.Procedure. The present study investigated a group of adolescents who were placed at a residential chemical dependency program for adolescents …

Kierkegaard's Dialectical Self-Creation: Implications For Counselors., Lorraine Angela Dopson Jan 1980

Kierkegaard's Dialectical Self-Creation: Implications For Counselors., Lorraine Angela Dopson

Theses and Dissertations

The counselor brings to the counseling relationship certain assumptions regarding human nature, its limits, possibilities and processes. Usually these assumptions are not articulated and sometimes they are not known. Counseling, as an endeavor which touches human lives, requires examination of its premises. The purpose of this study is to construct a philosophical basis for the counseling relationship based upon the works of Soren Kierkegaard (1813-1855), a rich source of such information. The study, which is literary in form, undertakes an indepth examination of those psychological aspects of Kierkegaard's major works which are especially relevant to understanding and facilitating the work of …

Natural And Hormonally Induced Changes Of The Reproductive Organs And Pineal Gland Activity During Hibernation In The Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Richardsonii., Jon Charles Pigage Jan 1980

Natural And Hormonally Induced Changes Of The Reproductive Organs And Pineal Gland Activity During Hibernation In The Ground Squirrel, Spermophilus Richardsonii., Jon Charles Pigage

Theses and Dissertations

Hibernation in Richardson's ground squirrels, Spermophilus richardsonii richardsonii, was studied for three winters. Animals were maintained at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous light (LL) during the first winter and at 5(DEGREES) (+OR-) 2(DEGREES)C and continuous darkness (DD) during the second and third winters. The typical ground squirrel hibernation pattern was observed throughout the study although the duration of the total and individual hibernation bouts was shorter than that reported in the field.Histological analyses of the gonads during hibernation indicated a greater amount of gonadotropic activity in male ground squirrels than in female ground squirrels. Mature spermatozoa were observed in male …

Preparation And Characterization Of Novel Supported Zero-Valent Nickel Catalysts., Daniel Hunt Ralston Jan 1980

Preparation And Characterization Of Novel Supported Zero-Valent Nickel Catalysts., Daniel Hunt Ralston

Theses and Dissertations

The codeposition of nickel with arenes by the metal atom cocondensation (MAC) technique at -196(DEGREES)C results in a mixture of Ni-arene complex and Ni clusters in the solid matrix. This matrix, when allowed to melt and flow to the bottom of the metal-atom reactor, forms a nickel slurry or deposits onto a support (such as Al(,2)O(,3)), if present. Both nickel powders, isolated from Ni-arene slurries, and the Ni-arene/Al(,2)O(,3) from Ni-arene deposition are active catalysts. The activity and selectivity for MAC prepared Ni-PhCH(,3), Ni-1,3,5-Ph(CH(,3))(,3), Ni-PhCF(,3), and Ni-m-Ph(CF(,3))(,2) in both supported and unsupported form, were examined for toluene hydrogenation and hydrodealkylation activity and …
