The Construction Of An Instrument To Measure Career Indecision., Mark W. Anderson Jan 1984

The Construction Of An Instrument To Measure Career Indecision., Mark W. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to construct an instrument to measure career indecision from a multidimensional perspective. The instrument was comprised of three scales. Each was designed to correspond to a different dimension of career indecision. The research consisted of two related stages. The first stage focused on the construction of the three scales including item development. The second stage involved the examination of the psychometric properties of the scales. In so doing, the internal consistency, temporal stability, independence, and relationship of the three developed scales with external criteria were assessed.Item development initially involved the analysis of the three …

Theses and Dissertations

Purpose. This study was designed as an investigation of stereotypic behaviors in blind children and their relationship with autism. Attempts were made to determine the similarities and differences of various groups of blind children in displaying stereotypic behaviors. Specifically, these groups were: (1) those with rubella, (2) those with retrolental fibroplasia, and (3) those blinded by other causes.Procedure. A total of twenty-six blind children were selected from two residential schools for the blind. Each child's cumulative file was reviewed for background information. Systematic observations were conducted on each child for presence of autistic-motility behaviors and eye-oriented behaviors. Observation was for …

The Effect Of Hydrocortisone On Auditory Sensitivity, Rodney J. Haug Jan 1984

The Effect Of Hydrocortisone On Auditory Sensitivity, Rodney J. Haug

Theses and Dissertations

In order to test the effect of cortisol on auditory thresholds, seventy-five volunteer right-handed college males were given either a 10 mg, 20 mg, 40 mg dose of hydrocortisone, or placebo, or were part of a control group in a double blind design. Right ear auditory thresholds were determined for frequencies of 500, 1,000, 4,000 and 8,000 Hz using the method of limits. The results were converted to mean threshold change scores by using threshold scores obtained for the same subject prior to treatment. Results indicated that treatment with 20 mg of cortisol reduced sensitivity at 8,000 Hz as compared …

The Potential Of Cognitive Style Constructs As A Contributing Factor In Learning Disability Classification., Alfred W. Johnson Jan 1984

The Potential Of Cognitive Style Constructs As A Contributing Factor In Learning Disability Classification., Alfred W. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to compare learning disabled with nonlearning disabled secondary school students (grades 7 through 12) on their responses to four cognitive style dimensions: (1) psychological differentiation, (2) locus of control, (3) conceptual tempo, and (4) breath of categorization. It was hypothesized that the variables could be used in a discriminating fashion in helping to distinguish the two groups. In addition age was investigated with junior high students being compared to senior high students.Participants for this study were junior-senior high learning disabled and normal students (27 LD and 33 nonLD). The design consisted of two groups …

Visits. (Original Writing; Short Stories, Play)., June Janelle Masters Jan 1984

Visits. (Original Writing; Short Stories, Play)., June Janelle Masters

Theses and Dissertations

Visits is a creative dissertation consisting of eight short stories, a one-act play, and a critical introduction. The stories deal with the members and friends of the Becker family; Zan is the chief character, having a major role in six of the stories. The play is about the characters that were left out of the stories or who were given only minor parts and serves as a humorous afterword. In the critical introduction, I briefly trace the history of the short story and relate my stories to the philosophy of the genre.

A Biography Of Kb: A Woman And An Era. (Volumes I And Ii) (Tiffany; North Dakota)., Janice Eileen Lookhart Ginger

Theses and Dissertations

This study is the in-depth documentation of a woman English educator whose life was at once uniquely individual and representative of an era and a profession. She was never famous, but rather was one of the countless numbers of teachers who so profoundly influenced and shaped American education. The life of Kathrine Belanger Macdonald Tiffany, or KB as she was more generally known, spanned a full century, 1878-1978. She both witnessed and participated in much of this country's history, from homesteading to politics. And she was especially influenced by the nineteenth-century, Protestant-American ideals of morality, citizenship, and education. The study is divided …

The Father Role: Correlates Of Fathering Attitudes (Cross-Generational)., Robert Daniel Olson Jan 1984

The Father Role: Correlates Of Fathering Attitudes (Cross-Generational)., Robert Daniel Olson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study focused on the attitudes that fathers hold regarding their father role. In Part 1, 61 men with at least one 4-year old child were assessed as to their father role attitudes, using the Fathering Attitude Survey (FAS). The FAS was created in an earlier study by factor analysis, and was normed on a sample of 360 fathers. Attitudes are measured along nine scales (e.g., Fathering is merely to be tolerated; Fathering is extremely rewarding and satisfying; Father is emotionally involved with his child; Fatherhood hurts his marriage; etc.). These attitudes were related to the men's psychological sex …

Naming Oneself Writer: Three Writing Lives., Helen Jane Lamar Jan 1984

Naming Oneself Writer: Three Writing Lives., Helen Jane Lamar

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate writers' perceptions of how they came to name themselves as writer. While many researchers have investigated the act of writing, little has been done to discover what the adult writer perceives to have been experientially important as a child and adult in the process of becoming and naming one's self writer. This study focused on the experiences writers perceived to be important in the act of naming.Literary and psychological concepts of the writer throughout history were examined and the philosophical views of Merleau-Ponty and Walker Percy that specifically pertain to naming and …

The Use Of The Holland Constructs, As Measured By The Act Assessment, To Predict College Persistence, Achievement, And Stability (Interests)., Raymond Gerszewski

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the use of the Holland constructs, as measured by the ACT Assessment, in the prediction of college persistence, achievement, and stability. Specifically, this research measured the combined effects of expressed and inventoried Holland type, congruency, consistency, and differentiation; along with the predictors of sex, academic aptitude, and achievement, upon persistence, achievement, and stability. In addition, the relationship of the Holland constructs and these other predictors was examined.ACT Assessment records for a large sample of new, first-time freshmen (N = 1158) who entered the University of North Dakota in the Fall of 1978 were retrieved and matched with …

The Lewis Acid Assisted Reactions Of N-Acylimidazoles With Transition Metal Nucleophiles (Metal Formyl, Iron Triad, N-Formylimidazole), Phillip Austin Kongshaug Jan 1984

The Lewis Acid Assisted Reactions Of N-Acylimidazoles With Transition Metal Nucleophiles (Metal Formyl, Iron Triad, N-Formylimidazole), Phillip Austin Kongshaug

Theses and Dissertations

This work investigated the Lewis acid assisted acylations of anionic transition metal complexes by N-acylimidazoles. The most important of these were N-formylimidazole, 1. Transition metal formyl complexes have been proposed as reactive intermediates in Fischer-Tropsch type reactions. In addition to 1; N-acetyl-, 11, N-pivaloyl-, 13, and N-benzoylimidazole, 15, were examined. The transition metal complexes studied were; (eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,5)W(CO)(,3)('-), (eta)('5)-C(,5)H(,5)W(CO)(,2)PPh(,3)('-), and Na(,2)M(CO)(,4) (M = Fe,Ru,Os).Initial studies were conducted on Na(,2)Fe(CO)(,4), 3, since most of the resultant acyl complexes had previously been synthesized and characterized. The formylation of 3 by 1 was found to be dependent upon the type of solvent, the type …

A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen Jan 1984

A Pale Reflection: American Indian Images In Mormon Arts, P. Jane Hafen

Theses and Dissertations

American Indians in Mormon arts suffer from the imposition of the white man's traditional ideas, images and stereotypes. An examination of Mormon literature since 1941, Mormon hymns and music, and Mormon visual arts reveals little consideration of Native American values: tribal affiliation, significance of place and community, myth and ritual. While the mainstream of American art has incorporated Native American values into Indian representations, and even found a place for Native American artists, Mormon arts adhere to historical misinterpretations, despite a number of fine Mormon Native American artists.
