Psychological And Environmental Factors Related To The Survivability Of American Indian Students In Education (Higher Education, Persistence, Cpi), Kenneth Leroy Litzau

Theses and Dissertations

Environmental perceptions and psychological characteristics of American Indian students were studied to assess the impact of the higher education environment on their psychological development. The sample consisted of high school seniors and university students from freshmen to graduate levels. Each participant responded to a biographical questionnaire, the California Psychological Inventory (CPI) and the College University Environment Scales II (CUES II).The responses were analyzed in terms of research questions designed to address (1) the relationship between the psychological and environmental domains, (2) student progress in higher education, (3) the prediction of academic achievement, and (4) differences between males and females and …

Preschool Teachers' Use Of Language For Distancing (Communication), Margaret Bergan Nardi Jan 1984

Preschool Teachers' Use Of Language For Distancing (Communication), Margaret Bergan Nardi

Theses and Dissertations

The ability to cognitively separate oneself from the immediate behavioral environment has been identified in the literature as the concept of distancing. It has been suggested that the child's distancing abilities are a reflection of his early experiences with the distancing language of significant others in his environment. Several curricula have been developed that focus on strategies that teachers can employ for facilitating distancing in children. Very little is reported in the literature, however, about the distancing language of teachers in practice. This study investigates the distancing language of six preschool teachers in their talk to preschool age children. The data …

An Investigation And Analysis Of The Epistemological Premises Inherent In Music Education Which Enable The Student To Actualize The Listening Process (Learning, Individual)., James Lee Croonquist Jan 1984

An Investigation And Analysis Of The Epistemological Premises Inherent In Music Education Which Enable The Student To Actualize The Listening Process (Learning, Individual)., James Lee Croonquist

Theses and Dissertations

The study was undertaken to determine the potential of the listening process in music for use by the learner. It focused on the epistemological premises of the instructional mode, particularly with reference to the use of the creative process as a form of learning which is realized through Susanne Langer's emphasis on actualization. In the study, an examination was made of the nature of the relationships that exist between the subject (the learner) and the object (the music). Emphasis was given to those relationships which enable the learner in his or her use of a knowledge base to transcend it …

Causal Interpretation Level And Perceptions Of The Counseling Process (Attributions, Therapy)., John Llewellyn Kube Jan 1984

Causal Interpretation Level And Perceptions Of The Counseling Process (Attributions, Therapy)., John Llewellyn Kube

Theses and Dissertations

Two forms of causal interpretation, one tentative and one declarative, were compared in this study with each other and with a noninterpretative response to explore their effects on the counseling process. The responses reflect differing levels of causal interpretation, defined by the degree of directiveness or level of counselor input. To examine the effect different counselors might have, each response was presented by a similar male or female counselor. In a randomized group posttest only design, 220 student subjects in two samples viewed a videotaped counseling vignette and completed a rating instrument. Assessed were perceptions of the counselors' attractiveness, expertness, and …

The Central Control Of Directional Fractionation: Lateralized Attentional Processes Indexed By Heart Rate., Anthony Stephen Papciak Jan 1984

The Central Control Of Directional Fractionation: Lateralized Attentional Processes Indexed By Heart Rate., Anthony Stephen Papciak

Theses and Dissertations

The peripheral electrophysiological manifestation of different attentional systems was investigated by recording heart rate. Two groups were differentiated using the personality variable locus of control. Subjects were given a perceptual task, Navon figures, which had figures that differed on global and analytical features. A warning stimulus (x) cued the subjects to the beginning of each trial. Following this task subjects were trained on viewing line drawings in either a global or an analytic style. The global style required the subject to find the gist or overall theme of the picture and the analytic style required finding three objects in the …

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan Jan 1984

The Effect Of Social Support On The Blood Pressure Of Mild And Moderate Hypertensives, Edith Price Vaughan

Theses and Dissertations

The study was conducted to determine the relationship between social support and the blood pressure of mild and moderate hypertensives. Motivation for the study was derived from the growing realization that the social support of an individual has a far-reaching effect on illness and health and that little research has been done concerning the specific effect that social support has on blood pressure.

The Norbeck Social Support Questionnaire (NSSQ) was administered to a convenience sample of 30 subjects selected from among the hypertensive clients of the Family Practice Clinic and General Medical Clinic located in the Peninsula Health Center. The …

Interpersonal Perceptions As Function Of Personality Styles, Suzanne R. Gascoyne Jan 1984

Interpersonal Perceptions As Function Of Personality Styles, Suzanne R. Gascoyne

Theses and Dissertations

One hundred, sixty-nine undergraduates participated in a study that investigated the effects of interpersonal self-perceptions on judgements made about others. Subjects' interpersonal styles were assessed by self-ratings using the Interpersonal Adjective Scales (IAS). Subjects also rated the interpersonal styles of two video-taped stimulus others using the IAS. In addition, subjects' degree of identification and desire to affiliate with the stimuli were assessed. The general design was a two-group rating comparison (Friendly-Dominant and Friendly-Submissive, and more extreme and less extreme) across two stimulus conditions, Hostile-Dominant and Hostile-Submissive. There were several findings and interpretations were forwarded. Extreme subjects assigned higher, more extreme …

Lignite Liquefaction Using Carbon Monoxide, Hydrogen And Water In A Hot Charged, Two-Staged, Batch Autoclave System, John James Gagliardi

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of second stage temperature and the effects of the type of solvent used on the liquefaction of North Dakota lignite in a staged liquefaction process were investigated. The UND hot-charge, time-sample, batch autoclave facility was used for the experimentation. Approximately one hundred and fifty grams of moisture- and ash-free (MAF) lignite, three hundred grams of solvent (either anthracene oil or a hydrogenated anthracene oil was used as the solvent), and seventy five grams of water were reacted in the hot charged experiments. Carbon monoxide was used in the first stage and hydrogen and one hundred grams of solvent …
