Metamorphism In The Eastern Lac Seul Region Of The English River Subprovince, Ontario, Steve J. Chipera

Theses and Dissertations

The English River subprovince of the Superior Province, Canada, is a linear, east-west trending high-grade metamorphic belt which extends from Lake Winnipeg in the west, to the James Bay lowlands in the east. It is composed of two prominent lithologic domains: a northern sedimentary gneiss-migmatite domain, and a southern plutonic domain. The northern domain consists primarily of alternating migmatized layers of garnet-biotite "wacke" and garnet-cordierite-biotite "pelitic" metasediments. The southern domain is composed mainly of intermediate granitic to trondhjemitic plutons. Bordering to the north and south are the lower grade Uchi and Wabigoon greenstone belts. Metamorphism and migmatization occurred during the …

The Relationship Between Environmental Awareness And Academic Achievement In Elementary School Children, Earl T. Leindecker

Theses and Dissertations

One hundred and seventy two sixth grade public school students were surveyed to investigate the possibility of a relationship between the children's perception of the cleanliness of the academic environment and the students' level of academic achievement. Utilizing a Pearson product-moment coefficient, student responses on a researcher-prepared Likert-type scale were correlated with the Normal Curve Equivalency Score for the reading portion of the Stanford Achievement Test. Analysis of the statistical data revealed a negative .139 correlation. The positive directional hypotheses cannot be accepted. However, the null hypothesis must be retained because of the negative .139 correlation at the .05 level …

Both sex and Head Start comparisons were made, but no significant findings were found. However, it was noted that boys who went to Head Start were able to achieve as much as the girls who did not. Since boys are usually less ready for school, the conclusion from …

"Do What The Spirit Say Do": John Beecher And His Poetry (Social Protest, Political Poetry, Alabama), James Alfred Helten Jan 1985

"Do What The Spirit Say Do": John Beecher And His Poetry (Social Protest, Political Poetry, Alabama), James Alfred Helten

Theses and Dissertations

John Beecher lived for nearly half of the twentieth century in the vanguard of social protest in the United States. His personal protest manifested itself primarily in two arenas which are often considered to be mutually exclusive, art and politics. In neither arena was he an organization man, but rather a "free radical." He belonged to no particular school of poets, and he espoused racial equality and freedom of ideology at times when neither of those issues was popular. Beecher felt no reticence about conjoining poetry and politics, confident of the benefits that might more than offset the detrimental effects. …

Individual Differences In Prose Memory Recall And Eeg Activation As A Function Of Personality (Arousal, Laterality, Attention), Rodney Allen Swenson Jan 1985

Individual Differences In Prose Memory Recall And Eeg Activation As A Function Of Personality (Arousal, Laterality, Attention), Rodney Allen Swenson

Theses and Dissertations

The present study investigated a theoretical model of neuroattentional self-control systems postulated by Tucker and Williamson (1984) by examining how the systems they outline present themselves behaviorally. One system, the Activation system, was described as functionally important for preparing the organism for maintaining a tonic, motoric readiness for action. It is complemented by an Arousal system, whose main function was to perceptually orient the central nervous system to novelty in the stimulus array. The former was postulated to be left-lateralized while the latter was said to be right-lateralized, in terms of hemispheric specialization. To examine this model, 40 subjects (20 …

Reactions Of Diphenyl Ether With Elemental Sulfur, Hydrogen-Sulfide And Iron-Sulfides In The Presence And Absence Of Hydrogen And Carbon Monoxide (Diphenyl-Methane, Pyrrhotite, Pyrite, Coal, Stainless Steel)., Philip G. Sweeny

Theses and Dissertations

In this dissertation reactions of diphenyl ether, a model coal compound, with H(,2)S, S('o) and iron sulfides in the presence and absence of H(,2) and CO are described. Temperatures between 375(DEGREES)C and 525(DEGREES)C were employed. Three major types of batch autoclaves were used: Pyrex, 316 stainless steel and 1060 aluminum. The products of these reactions were quantitated by GLC, and qualified by mass spectroscopy and spiking with authentic samples using GLC.The reaction of diphenyl ether with H(,2)S in Pyrex reactors produced mainly phenol and thiophenol. An activation energy of 45.6 kcal/mole was calculated for this reaction. This reaction was enhanced …
