Properties Of The Pellian Sequence, Stuart P. Kaler Aug 1985

Properties Of The Pellian Sequence, Stuart P. Kaler

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to show that the Pellian sequence possesses a great deal of symmetry and regularity. The English method shall be introduced to show that there is a least positive integer x that makes Ax^2+1 a square if and only if A is a non-square. This method will be shown to produce the entire infinite solution set for any positive integer A.

The method of continued fractions will be described and will be used to construct a simple algorithm to produce the Pellian sequence given in both the table and the diskette of Pellian numbers. It …

Attitudes Toward Rape And Recovery From Sexual Assault, Lynn White Eggers

Theses and Dissertations

In order to understand more fully the process of recovery from sexual assault, this study investigated the variables considered to be influential in that process, including the age of the victim, her marital status, the time elapsed since the assault, who the perpetrator was, and where the assault took place. In addition, the victim's beliefs about sexual assault were also assessed, using the Feminist Attitude Toward Rape Scale, as were her perceptions of society's beliefs. Recovery was evaluated using the Beck Depression Inventory, the Modified Fear Survey, and the Derogatis Symptom Check List.

The subjects were 30 women, ages 18 …

Data Base Creation Of Counselor Profile For The Small Business Administration, Jonathan K. Titus

Theses and Dissertations

This study analyzes the Small Business Administration procedures for the assigning of business counselors to a small firm needing assistance. The present system is done manually and is somewhat inefficient. The proposed system would automate to a large extent the present system, thus increasing efficiency and reducing the number of hours required to assign counselors and maintain the system.

The study is divided into two parts. The first part concerns itself with reviewing literature on data bases, in general, and the current data base programs on the market. These programs were compared for applicability to the proposed system. The second …

Identity And Language: Roxy In Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson, Mary Frances Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The literary dialect of Mark Twain's Pudd'nhead Wilson goes relatively unnoticed by scholars since it does not seem as interesting as the literary dialect of his masterpiece Huckleberry Finn, There seem to be only two distinct dialects in Pudd ' nhead W1.1 son (as compared to Huckleberry Finn's seven to nine); one spoken by the whites and one spoken by the blacks. Almost all of the black dialect is spoken by one character, Roxy, the slave woman who is legally black but white in appearance. A closer look at Roxy's dialect can determine language characteristics, along with important matters of …

Brood Parasitism And Reproduction Of Canvasbacks And Redheads On The Delta Marsh, Rodney D. Sayler May 1985

Brood Parasitism And Reproduction Of Canvasbacks And Redheads On The Delta Marsh, Rodney D. Sayler

Theses and Dissertations

I studied brood parasitism and breeding ecology of canvasbacks (Aythya valisineria) and redheads (A. americana) nesting on the Delta Marsh near Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, from 1977 to 1980. The dissertation focuses on 3 aspects of this investigation: 1) the role of prairie drought in influencing pochard reproductive performance, including a comprehensive review of hypotheses explaining evolution of brood parasitism in waterfowl (Anatidae), 2) behavioral ecology and evolution of host/parasite interactions, and 3) development of improved redhead aging techniques by using cluster analysis.

Redheads shifted egg distributions from eggs in redhead nests to eggs laid parasitically in canvasback nests during …

Perceptions Of Selected Elementary School Principal' Leadership Behavior By Selected Experienced, Effective Elementary School Teachers In Minnesota, Elizabeth Reimer Myers

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of selected elementary school principals' leadership behavior held by selected experienced, effective elementary school teachers in Minnesota. Understanding the views and needs of these teachers should help principals increase their leadership effectiveness and thus positively affect the performance and morale of such teachers.

Thirty-three experienced, effective teachers were asked to respond to the Leader Behavior Description Questionnaire-Form XII (LBDQ-12) by rating their principals' actual leadership behavior and their perceptions of ideal leadership behavior of principals. Resulting data were statistically treated by the jt-test for repeated measures for significant differences at …
