The dependent variables were overall achievement, skills, applications, and retention in each of these areas. The sample consisted of five classes of introductory-level algebra at Virginia State University. The experimental group consisted of 50 students in two classes; the control group was made …

Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter Jan 1986

Phonetic Ambiguity Perception In Reading Disabled And Non-Disabled Children And Adolescents, Elizabeth A. Carter

Theses and Dissertations

There are speculations that disabled readers may fail to correctly decode written words because they are insensitive to language's phonetic form. This insensitivity is presumed by some to be due to a speech perceptual deficit. The purpose of the current study was to assess differences between disabled and non-disabled adolescents and elementary school students in their perceptual accuracy in decoding phonetically ambiguous speech. The effects of two processing factors derived from previous research, priming and word form (e.g., Spencer & Carter, 1982), were also examined to assess how perceptual processes may differ between groups. Clinical evidence of some verbal problems …

Characterization Of A Staphylococcal Trimethoprim Resistance Gene, Jerald Preston Coughter Jan 1986

Characterization Of A Staphylococcal Trimethoprim Resistance Gene, Jerald Preston Coughter

Theses and Dissertations

Trimethoprim resistance(Tp r) is encoded by conjugative plasmids in clinically significant staphylococcal isolates. Two genetically and physically similar plasmids from S. aureus, pG01 and pGOS, have Tp r genes that map in different locations on these plasmids. In order to study the relatedness of the Tp r genes and their products to other known Tp r genes, a 1.2 kb fragment of pG01 and a 4.2 kb fragment of pGOS were cloned in E. coli and used as probes for in situ filter hybridization experiments.

A 500 base pair subclone of the original 1.2 kb fragment containing only the staphylococcal …

Degradation Of Human Anaphylatoxin C3a By Rat Peritoneal Mast Cells: A Role For The Secretory Granule Enzyme Chymase And Heparin Proteoglycan, James Edmund Gervasoni Jr

Theses and Dissertations

Purified human C3a was iodinated (125I-C3a) and used to study the interaction of labeled peptide with rat peritoneal mast cells (RMC). Cellular binding of 125I-C3a occurred within 30 sec, followed by a rapid dissociation from the cell. Both the binding of 125I-C3a and the rate of dissociation from the cell were temperature dependent. At 0°C, the binding of 125I-C3a was increased and the rate of dissociation reduced, as compared to 37°C. Once 125I-C3a was exposed to RMC, it lost the ability to rebind to a second batch of RMC. Analysis of the supernatants by …

Prediction Of Children's Sociometric Status From Adult Ratings, Robert S. Falk Jan 1986

Prediction Of Children's Sociometric Status From Adult Ratings, Robert S. Falk

Theses and Dissertations

Poor peer relations in childhood predict difficulty in adolescent and adult adjustment. Sociometric methods provide a useful way to operationalize social competence. Five groups of children (Average, Popular, Rejected, Neglected, and Controversial), identified by nomination sociometrics, show significant differences on a variety of behavioral and non-behavioral indices. This categorization scheme has value in the identification of children at risk for later maladaptive outcomes, and may be useful in designing preventive intervention programs.

The current study attempted to determine the degree to which diagnostic ratings generated by significant adults can be generalized to the sociometric status of children. Parent and teacher …

A Burkean Logological Analysis Of Doctrine And Covenants Section 88, Joann Farias Jan 1986

A Burkean Logological Analysis Of Doctrine And Covenants Section 88, Joann Farias

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis applies Kenneth Burke's method of logology as exemplified in The Rhetoric of Religion to analyze the Mormon text Doctrine and Covenants Section 88. This method of logology is based on the assumption that what is said about God in theology reveals a religion's use of language to influence human motives. The logological method uses six analogies to discover the motives implicit in religious terminologies. These six analogies are as follows: words-Word, Matter-Spirit, the Negative, the Titular, Time-Eternity, and the Formal.

This study revealed that the terminology contained in Doctrine and Covenants uses motives far diferent from the motives …

Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen Jan 1986

Precinct Government In Salt Lake County, Utah 1852-1904, Steven K. Madsen

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis traces the origin, development, and decline, from 1852 to 1904, of Salt Lake County's judicial precincts. A precinct functioned as the basic subdivision of county government. Its boundaries were generally coterminous with those of local communities. It was established to allow for a degree of local control by the people.
Chapter two reveals that precinct justices experienced over time a marked decline in socio-political prominence. This is largely due to legislative statutes that decreased their jurisdictional powers. Chapter three examines the evolution of precinct boundaries. It is demonstrated that geographic distribution of individuals played a major role in …

Removal Of Sodium From Nerco Subbituminous Coal By Ion Exchange In A Continuous Countercurrent Unit Using An Aqueous Sulfuric Acid Medium, Dennis B. Thorfinnson

Theses and Dissertations

The removal of sodium and other ions (potassium, magnesium, calcium, and aluminum) from a Montana subbituminous coal by ion exchange, with the hydrogen ion from aqueous sulfuric acid, in a continuous countercurrent unit was investigated as a function of initial sulfuric acid concentration, coal particle size, liquid to solid mass ratio, and coal residence time.

The results from this investigation indicate that the ion exchange process in the continuous countercurrent unit is controlled by film diffusion. Experimental results also indicate that the sodium removal is directly proportional to the initial sulfuric acid concentration and coal residence time, inversely proportional to …

A Conceptual Analysis And Exploratory Investigation Of Christian Development, David Carlisle Dowd Aug 1985

A Conceptual Analysis And Exploratory Investigation Of Christian Development, David Carlisle Dowd

Theses and Dissertations

Based upon an exegesis of relevant Christian scripture, a theory of Christian development was produced. This theory posits eight stages of development moving broadly from faith, through self-discipline, to Christian love. Descriptive characterizations are provided for each of the stages, along with a psychodynamic structure to explain the process of movement from one stage to the next. This theory was compared and contrasted with the theories of Erikson, Kohl- berg, Gleason, and Fowler. Strong parallels were noted between the proposed theory of Christian development and Erikson' s theory of psycho-social development. Relevant empirical studies were briefly surveyed and support for …
