Characterization Of Certain Physical Properties Of The Purified Cytoplasmic And Mitochondrial Forms Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Liver., Wolfgang Ernst Gallwitz Jan 1986

Characterization Of Certain Physical Properties Of The Purified Cytoplasmic And Mitochondrial Forms Of Phosphoenolpyruvate Carboxykinase In Rabbit Liver., Wolfgang Ernst Gallwitz

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to purify rabbit hepatic mitochondrial phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK) and characterize certain physical properties of the purified cytoplasmic and mitochondrial forms of PEPCK in rabbit liver.Purification to >95 percent homogeneity of rabbit hepatic mitochondrial PEPCK was accomplished with the use of QAE Sephadex chromatography followed by Bio-Gel HTP (hydroxyapatite) chromatography and Reactive Blue 2-Agarose chromatography as the final step. A 134-fold purification of the enzyme was achieved with an overall yield of 14 percent and a final specific activity of 13.6 (mu)moles/min/mg protein. Sodium dodecyl sulfate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of the enzyme indicated a molecular …

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund Jan 1986

The Girl Scouts In Utah: An Administrative History, 1921-1985, Jennifer L. Lund

Theses and Dissertations

Girl Scouting began in Utah in 1921 out of a desire of several wealthy women to help build the character of young girls in Ogden. Exhibiting many elements of the "social gospel" aspect of progressivism, they adopted the Girl Scout program which emphasized preparation for practical living, appreciation of nature, and development of character.
Since the first troops were organized in Ogden, Girl Scouting slowly spread throughout the rest of the state, resulting in several Councils and Lone Troops. After responding to a call for consolidation from the National Girl Scout Council the Utah Scouts made a dramatic change in …

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson Jan 1986

A History Of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints In Japan From 1948 To 1980, Terry G. Nelson

Theses and Dissertations

The history of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Japan from 1948 to 1980 is a study in cross-cultural interaction. Compared to the earlier attempts of the Church in proselytizing the Japanese in the period 1901 to 1924, there are some significant contrasts. The earlier mission is seen as an attempt by a small, relatively unknown, provincial religion, in financial straits, just emerging into the twentieth century, trying to establish itself in a non-christian, fiercely nationalistic, culturally closed nation.

From very humble beginnings, starting with second and third generation Japanese in Hawaii, and with LDS members of …

The Public Speaking Of John Taylor: Champion Of Liberty, Larry D. Anderson Jan 1986

The Public Speaking Of John Taylor: Champion Of Liberty, Larry D. Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The speaking of John Taylor influenced the lives of Latter-day Saints for five decades. He delivered between two and three thousand addresses. In those addresses he promulgated a diversity of principles concerning the kingdom of God. This study focused on Taylor's ideas regarding liberty. Those ideas were often found in Taylor's speaking between 1857 and 1867. It was a time of threatened liberties for the people he lead. His speeches during those years played a significant part in swaying politcal and military efforts, as well as bolstering Mormon determination.

This study found that Taylor's ideas of liberty are based largely …

The Use Of Oral Communications Courses In High School To Increase Skills In Language Arts, Sylvia C. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to see if there is any difference between the reading and English test scores (TASK= Stanford Test of Academic Skills) between those high schoo1 students who take oral communications courses and those who do not take such courses.

This study used a sample of 40 students enrolled in oral communications courses from three randomly selected high schools. The comparison sample included 40 randomly selected students enrolled in Phase II English courses at the same schools.

The Stanford Test of Academic Skills served as both a pretest and a posttest for scores for all of …

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Teachers' Locus Of Control And Attribution Training Upon Risk-Taking And Locus Of Control Of Pre-School Children, Deborah Chamberly Jan 1986

An Investigation Of The Effects Of Teachers' Locus Of Control And Attribution Training Upon Risk-Taking And Locus Of Control Of Pre-School Children, Deborah Chamberly

Theses and Dissertations

he purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of teachers' locus of control upon the locus of control and risk-taking behavior of four- and five-year old preschool children. The scores on Rotter's Internal-External Locus of Control Scale were used to assess the teachers' locus of control. Scores on the Preschool and Primary Nowicki-Strickland Internal-External Control Scale were employed to determine locus of control of the students. A risk-taking situation was devised to evaluate this behavior in the subjects, and attribution training activities were selected. Control and experimental groups were identified and the treatment administered accordingly. Pretest and posttest …

Petrology, Mineralogy, And Geochemistry Of The Goldlund Gold Deposit, Northwestern Ontario, Steven D. Giddings Jan 1986

Petrology, Mineralogy, And Geochemistry Of The Goldlund Gold Deposit, Northwestern Ontario, Steven D. Giddings

Theses and Dissertations

The Goldlund Mine is located in the Wabigoon Sub province of the Canadian Shield. Although the mine has been open sporadically since the late 1930's, little is known about the geochemistry and petrography of the deposit. The purpose of this study was to use petro-graphic, geochemical, and physical data to document and better understand the host rock, alteration, and mineralization of the deposit, and to develop a generalized model of formation.

Results showed that the host rocks of the gold mineralization are albitized tonalite dikes. Gold, in native form and in gold-silver tellurides, occurs in quartz veins and in adjacent …
