Regulation Of The Solubility Of Zinc In Milk (Calcium-Phosphate, Co-Precipitation, Iron)., Lowell S. Nelson Jr. Jan 1986

Regulation Of The Solubility Of Zinc In Milk (Calcium-Phosphate, Co-Precipitation, Iron)., Lowell S. Nelson Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

Humans absorb zinc, iron and copper more readily from human milk than from bovine milk or infant formulae. Given that solubility is requisite to absorption, the solubilities of select components, including zinc, were examined in preparations of bovine and human milk and in model solutions based on the low-molecular-weight components of the two milks. Solubility was examined over a pH range similar to that found in the human digestive system. Factors which could alter zinc solubility were examined by changing the composition of the model solutions and by fortifying milks with various compounds. Each aliquot of the models or milks was …

Loopscripting: Theory And Practice Of Repetition In The Literary Text (Creative Writing, Playwriting)., Conrad Eugene Davidson Jan 1986

Loopscripting: Theory And Practice Of Repetition In The Literary Text (Creative Writing, Playwriting)., Conrad Eugene Davidson

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation, entitled Loopscripting: Theory and Practice of Repetition in the Literary Text, consists of three parts: theoretical chapters examining concepts of repetition and recursion; two one-act plays and an autobiographical narrative, three texts which attempt to demonstrate a methodology of loopscriting; and commentary on the creative writing efforts. This creative writing project is a attempt to develop a relationship between literary art and the fields of mathematics, psychology, philosophy, and music.Creative writers constantly seek ways to structure, order, and relate their ideas after initial creative impulses. In this dissertation, I attempt to chart a creative process in the development …

Mental Health Values: A National Survey Of Psychotherapists' Views Regarding "Good Mental Health"., Mark Leslie Haugen Jan 1986

Mental Health Values: A National Survey Of Psychotherapists' Views Regarding "Good Mental Health"., Mark Leslie Haugen

Theses and Dissertations

This study is concerned with the subset of values pertaining to what constitutes "good mental health" (MH values). Theoretical and empirical attempts to define mental health are first reviewed. Next, the theoretical and research literature pertaining to the role of values in psychotherapy is discussed. A study is described in which national samples of psychotherapists were surveyed about their MH values. The Mental Health Values Questionnaire (MHVQ), a factor-analytically-derived measure of MH values (Tyler et al. 1983) was mailed to 200 systematically selected psychoanalysts, psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers. Several demographic/professional items were also included. Relationships between these variables and MHVQ …

The Expectations For The Management Of The Extracurricular Activities Programs As Perceived By Administrators Of Activities, School Board Presidents, And Supervisors Of Activities., Terrance A. Hjelmstad

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to attempt to clarify the role expectations held for the administrator of activities of schools in North Dakota as perceived by school board presidents, supervisors of activities, and the administrators themselves.A questionnaire developed by the researcher asked respondents to complete twenty-five questions. The multiple choice questions dealt with practical problem situations the administrator of activities may face. The questionnaire was sent to school board presidents, administrators of activities, and supervisors of activities in all twenty Class A schools and forty selected Class B schools. The supervisors included those involved with music, speech, debate, drama, and …

The Implications Of The Charter Of Rights And Freedoms For Students' Rights In Education In Canada., Lauren Cartwright Jan 1986

The Implications Of The Charter Of Rights And Freedoms For Students' Rights In Education In Canada., Lauren Cartwright

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation was to examine the implications of selected sections of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms for students' rights in education in Canada. The author began by presenting a brief history and comparison of the educational systems and legal frameworks of Canada and the United States. Corresponding sections of the Charter and the United States Constitution were then identified. The language of sections 2, 7, and 15 of the Charter was compared and contrasted to the language of the relevant amendments. This was accomplished by examining relevant American case law for the judicial interpretation of the meaning …

Part I: The Intraluminal Chemistry Of Calcium, Magnesium And Zinc In Human And Bovine Milks. Part Ii: Complexed Metal Ion Binding To Poly(Acrylic Acid): A Simple Model For In Vivo Metal Ion Binding., Richard Warren Ames Jan 1986

Part I: The Intraluminal Chemistry Of Calcium, Magnesium And Zinc In Human And Bovine Milks. Part Ii: Complexed Metal Ion Binding To Poly(Acrylic Acid): A Simple Model For In Vivo Metal Ion Binding., Richard Warren Ames

Theses and Dissertations

Part I. The bioavailability of calcium, magnesium, and zinc is greater from human milk than bovine milk, even though individual concentration magnitudes are reversed. Reasons for this are investigated by studying the complexation and precipitation reactions of these minerals and the low molecular weight ligands present in both milks at pHs ranging from two to eight. These reactions control the solubility of these minerals and we assume that for a mineral to be bioavailable it must be in solution and arrive at the appropriate intestinal segment for absorption. Techniques used to study mineral solubilities are: computer modelling, synthetic models, and …

A Study Of Trypsin And Chemically Modified Trypsins Using Inhibitors, Kinetics And Spectroscopy., Charles K. Vomacka Jan 1986

A Study Of Trypsin And Chemically Modified Trypsins Using Inhibitors, Kinetics And Spectroscopy., Charles K. Vomacka

Theses and Dissertations

The ionization potentials of carboxyl groups in trypsin were studied with spectroscopic and kinetic methods. A mechanism based inhibitor (p-nitrophenol anthranilate) was used to block the Ser-195 (acylated enzyme) residue in the active site with a fluorescent anthranilate tag. Fluorescence quenching studies with iodide and acrylamide suggested the pKa value of the His-57 residue adjacent to the anthranilate tag was between 7 and 8. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) analysis of the carboxyl groups symmetrical stretch at 1400 cm('-1) showed that all their pKa values were 4.6 or below in the trypsin anthranilate system. FT-IR studies on native trypsin and …

The Effects Of Status Configuration And Counseling Style On Korean Perspectives Of Counseling, John Bernard Foley Jan 1986

The Effects Of Status Configuration And Counseling Style On Korean Perspectives Of Counseling, John Bernard Foley

Theses and Dissertations

This study was designed to study the effects of status configuration and style of counseling on Korean perspectives of counseling. Status configuration and counseling style, each with two levels, were the two independent variables manipulated in this study. Two written scripts, determined by judges to represent directive and reflective counseling styles, and two counselor-client status configurations (congruent versus incongruent) served as the stimuli. Congruent status existed where the therapist was older than the client, incongruency existed when the client was the elder.Subjects (n = 60) were randomly assigned to four treatment groups. Groups were categorized by status configuration and counseling …

Edith Wharton And A Modernist Reappraisal: Three Critical Essays, Sue Ellen Sears Jan 1986

Edith Wharton And A Modernist Reappraisal: Three Critical Essays, Sue Ellen Sears

Theses and Dissertations

These three essays focus on the way in which Edith Wharton's reputation as a novelist of manners has limited the full appraisal of her fiction which her skill as a writer deserves. The first essay reviews Wharton's life and development as a "social historian," pointing out stylistic conventions which synthesize her use of culture into an evolution of character development in The Age of Innocence. These conventions, entitled "arch" in this study, include Wharton's use of syntax and diction. Through an analysis of relative proportions of syntactical elements and peculiarities of diction, shifts in style are noted and linked directly to …
