Childhood Sexual Abuse As An Antecedent Of Problem Drinking And Sexual Dysfunction In Women, Sue Ann Russell Aug 1992

Childhood Sexual Abuse As An Antecedent Of Problem Drinking And Sexual Dysfunction In Women, Sue Ann Russell

Theses and Dissertations

A number of studies have linked childhood sexual abuse to problems with alcohol and sexual dysfunction in adult women. Moreover, some researchers suggest temporal sequences in which either (a) early sexual abuse increases women's risks of sexual dysfunction, which in turn leads to increased alcohol use, or (b) the reverse, in which sexual abuse contributes to excessive drinking, which in turn impairs sexual functioning.

Most studies of these issues to date have had serious methodological problems (e.g., small samples, often from clinical populations lacking control groups). Additional limitations have been the limited range of variables measured and the lack of …

The Effects Of Ddavp On Speed Of Accessing Long-Term Memory And Incidental Learning In Healthy Male And Female Volunteers, Robyn R. Swenson Aug 1992

The Effects Of Ddavp On Speed Of Accessing Long-Term Memory And Incidental Learning In Healthy Male And Female Volunteers, Robyn R. Swenson

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of desmopressin acetate (DDAVP), a vasopressin analog, were investigated using a computerized task designed to measure speed of accessing long-term memory at three levels of processing (physically identical decisions, same name decisions and same category decisions), and an unexpected free recall of the words presented. Forty-one healthy females and forty-three healthy males (age 18-34) intranasally received either 60 ug DDAVP in 0.6 ml of solution or 0.6 ml of saline 20 minutes prior to testing. DDAVP did not affect response time on the computerized task; however, when response time control trials were subtracted from the corresponding cells of …

Behavior Of Nutrients And Trace Metals In Muck Sediments From A Florida Lagoon, Huan Feng Aug 1992

Behavior Of Nutrients And Trace Metals In Muck Sediments From A Florida Lagoon, Huan Feng

Theses and Dissertations

Fine-grained, organic-rich sediments are a potentially importment reservoir for nutrients and contaminants in the Indian River Lagoon, Florida. However, little is known about the behavior of these chemical species and whether they can be released to the overlying water column. In that regard, this study had two objectives: (1 ) to determine the concentrations of dissolved nitrogen and phosphorus species and some metals in representative muck deposits and the fluxes of these species to the overlying waters of the Indian River Lagoon; and (2) to identify the mechanism controlling concentrations of nutrients and trace metals in these muck deposits. Results …

Jurors' Perceptions Of Gender Differences In Expert Witness Testimony, Mark Rodlund Jul 1992

Jurors' Perceptions Of Gender Differences In Expert Witness Testimony, Mark Rodlund

Theses and Dissertations

Recently, there have been clinical psychologists appearing in court to testify as expert witnesses. However, the use of psychology in the legal system has a history dating back to Thucydides in the fifth century B.C. The early focus of psychology was on the determination of insanity. Later, eye witness testimony (especially of children as witnesses) was challenged in the courtroom using psychological principles. Children are increasingly used to testify as alleged abuse victims. This can result in a conflict between the accused person's right to view all witnesses testifying and the potential that the child would be further victimized by …

The Historical Geography Of Swiss Settlers At The Red River Colony 1821-1826, Harleen J. Young Jul 1992

The Historical Geography Of Swiss Settlers At The Red River Colony 1821-1826, Harleen J. Young

Theses and Dissertations

Europeans emigrated to the New World for a variety of reasons. The promise of free land and a better life especially lured many Europeans to North America. When going to a new unsettled area, emigrants have a tendency to go in small, isolated cluster groups which share a primary allegiance to a particular country or province. Such was the case with the Swiss who settled at the Red River Colony on land granted by the Hudson's Bay Company to Thomas Douglas, Fifth Earl of Selkirk, in 1811. The grant was given for the establishment of a farming community at present …

Multi-Ion Ambipolar Diffusion, Thomas E. Gist Jul 1992

Multi-Ion Ambipolar Diffusion, Thomas E. Gist

Theses and Dissertations

The continuity and momentum equations for electrons and multiple ion species are solved analytically and numerically using a new model for ambipolar diffusion. The general form of the model is valid for any quasi-neutral plasma for which the diffusion approximation is appropriate, including positive or negative ions, arbitrary geometries, and time dependence. The model provides criteria for determining when single ion diffusion theory is appropriate for describing multi-ion discharges, when a multi-ion proportional model is appropriate, and when a multi-ion nonproportional model is necessary. An expression is developed which provides a necessary condition for proportionality and provides the proportionality constant …

Thirty-four, adult, caucasian females meeting the DSM-III-R criteria for bulimia nervosa served as subjects. Nineteen subjects received inpatient/outpatient treatment, while fifteen received outpatient treatment. Subjects completed an initial test packet, including the Beck Depression Inventory …

From Villain To Hero: Traces Of The Gothic Villain/Hero In Four Modern Films, Richard N. Van Eck Jul 1992

From Villain To Hero: Traces Of The Gothic Villain/Hero In Four Modern Films, Richard N. Van Eck

Theses and Dissertations

The Gothic novel of the 19th century js often viewed as the beginning and end of the "true" Gothic. While its role in creating or contributing to other genres, such as Science Fiction, Horror, and Romance, is widely recognized, the view of the Gothic as a "dead" genre often persists. The Gothic tradition has continued to the present time, however, and has experienced a recent resurgence of popularity in modern film.

This thesis proposes to examine four modern films as manifestations of the modern Gothic. A working definition of the original Gothic will be formulated, and then refined through the …

Photoluminescence Study Of Si1-XGeX/Si And Si/Ge Strained Layer Superlattices, Todd D. Steiner

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, there has been interest in obtaining efficient photoluminescence (PL) and electroluminescence from Si1-xGex/Si or Si/Ge superlattices. In this dissertation, longperiod c/Si superlattices grown by molecular beam epitaxy at 500°C and annealed post-growth using rapid thermal annealing were investigated using photoluminescence (PL). The as-grown samples have broad PL bands from isoelectronic centers related to Ge complexes as well as sharp near-edge bound exciton lines. The broad PL band was found to be 120 meV below the band gap, after accounting for the effects of confinement of holes. Post-growth annealing resulted in a reduction in …

A Modal Analysis And Modelling Of A Lightly Damped Large Space Structure, Scott E. George

Theses and Dissertations

This study involves the modification to the PACOSS Dynamic Test Article to create a lightly damped representative large space structure with closely spaced, low frequency modes. An experimental modal analysis is performed to recharacterize the low frequency flexible vibration modes. A finite element model is created using MSC/NASTRAN to predict low frequency behavior using both real eigenvalue analysis and frequency response analysis. Then a reduced order model is created and fine-tuned to represent the dynamics of the structure for the identified low frequency modes.
