Electronic-To-Vibrational (E → V) Energy Transfer From Br* To Co2 And Electronic-To-Vibrational (E → V) Laser Feasibility Studies, Steven M. Katapski
Theses and Dissertations
The energy transfer mechanism from photo-excited bromine atoms (Br(2P½)) to C02 is investigated in a pulsed fluorescence experiment. An excimer-pumped pulsed dye laser operating at 480 nm is used to photolyze molecular bromine, resulting in the creation of one excited state bromine atom, Br(2P½), and one ground state atom, Br(2P3/2). The electronically- excited bromine atoms (referred to as Br*) collide with and excite vibrational modes in the ground electronic state of CO2. Measurements are made of the Br* lifetimes and associated quenching processes, and the …

This paper summarizes studies that were performed to evaluate the effectiveness and utility of protocols used for RNA isolation and detection. In addition, DNA probes were prepared and evaluated. Methodologies that were evaluated include the maxi-prep and mini-prep plasmid preparation techniques; isolation of RNA by extraction with organic solvents and by centrifugation through a cesium chloride gradient; and comparison of the detection of RNA-DNA hybrids using radioactively-labeled probes and digoxigenin-labeled probes. The maxi-prep and mini-prep plasmid preparation protocols both produced good quality DNA. The maxi-prep method was superior to the mini-prep method in terms of total quantity of DNA produced, …
Alteration Of Dna Synthesis In The Adult Newt Ventricular Myocyte., Mark Henning Soonpaa
Alteration Of Dna Synthesis In The Adult Newt Ventricular Myocyte., Mark Henning Soonpaa
Theses and Dissertations
To better understand the mechanisms governing the proliferation of cardiac myocytes it is important to identify the factors controlling this phenomenon, and to characterize their actions. The ventricular myocyte from the adult newt, Notophthalmus viridescens, is well suited to this type of study, due to its large chromosomes, ease of culture maintenance, and ability to undergo mitosis with cytokinesis. DNA synthesis was quantified in vitro in myocytes treated with platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-$\beta$), fibroblast growth factors (FGFs), 12-0-tetradecanoylphorbol-13-acetate (TPA), heparin, or conditioned medium from ventricular myocytes or nonmyocytes (primarily endothelial cells). Ultrastructure of TPA-treated myocytes was …
Cognitive Appraisals And Coping Styles Of Chronic Tension Headache Sufferers., Angela Keen
Cognitive Appraisals And Coping Styles Of Chronic Tension Headache Sufferers., Angela Keen
Theses and Dissertations
The existing headache literature neglects to examine the possible differences between tension headache subjects and controls with regard to cognitive appraisals or coping styles. Also, despite the traditional view that tension headaches occur in close proximity to a stressor, there is limited empirical evidence supporting this idea (Ad Hoc Committee, 1962; Gannon, Haynes, Cuevas & Chavez, 1987). In addition, the results from studies on the efficacy of the traditional muscle-contraction model of tension headaches are ambiguous (Chapman, 1986; Hursey, Holroyd, Penzien & Holm, 1985).Lazarus and Folkman (1984) suggest that a person's ideas will have the greatest influence on appraisal when …

The Relationship Between Personality And Career Indecision Patterns., Timothy Brian Seaworth
The Relationship Between Personality And Career Indecision Patterns., Timothy Brian Seaworth
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers have suggested that the structure of career indecision is complex, and that it exists in different forms. However, the dimensions underlying that structure and the different patterns of career indecision which have been hypothesized to exist have not yet been satisfactorily identified. Several researchers have suggested that personality dimensions might play an important role in defining the different forms. The purpose of this study was two-fold: to identify different patterns of career indecision among a sample of college students; and second, to examine the relationship between career indecision and personality dimensions. The items of three career indecision instruments (My Vocational …
Development Of An Environment For Software Reliability Model Selection, Salah A. Elewa
Development Of An Environment For Software Reliability Model Selection, Salah A. Elewa
Theses and Dissertations
An environment was developed for solving the problem of selecting a proper software reliability model for a given set of software failures. The idea behind the environment developed in this dissertation was to liken a collected set of software failure data to a previous one that proved to fit well with a specified software reliability model. Software failures were assumed to have a two-Parameter exponential distribution with unequal type II censoring. A test criterion was derived for testing Ratio Criterion. The exact distribution of the test criterion was derived. An asymptotic approximation was also obtained and was found to be …
