When most of the membership understands the benefits of the name change, the feeling will become more …

Occupational Sex Type And Gender Differences In Vocational Preference: An Internal Analysis Of Item Bias On Selected Items Of The Strong Interest Inventory Using Dif Procedures., Jesse R. Aros Feb 1996

Occupational Sex Type And Gender Differences In Vocational Preference: An Internal Analysis Of Item Bias On Selected Items Of The Strong Interest Inventory Using Dif Procedures., Jesse R. Aros

Theses and Dissertations

Presenting problem. The measurement of expressed occupational preference continues to be affected by occupational sextyping, a non-interest related variable. Teasing out bias (sextype) from restrictiveness (real and artifact gender differences) is needed to help improve sex-fairness in vocational measurement. Occupational sextyping may affect internalizations of external expectancies of what one should be like or likes as much as what an individual is truly like or likes, altering preference.Research and methods. Responses were obtained from an anonymous data pool (n = 16,484) of 18-22 year olds who submitted their SII to the test publisher for scoring. Mean age and standard deviation …

Coping Strategies And Emotional And Physical Status Of Family Members Of Mental Health Consumers., Meryl Grant Willert Jr. Jan 1996

Coping Strategies And Emotional And Physical Status Of Family Members Of Mental Health Consumers., Meryl Grant Willert Jr.

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this exploratory study was to examine whether use of particular coping strategies (e.g., problem solving, cognitive restructuring, express emotions, social support, problem avoidance, wishful thinking, self-criticism, social withdrawal) predicted self-reported depression, anxiety, anger, and physical symptoms of family members of mental health consumers. A mail survey was conducted involving a non-random sample of 83 family members who were affiliated with the North Dakota Alliance for the Mentally Ill (ND-AMI). The survey consisted of a General Information questionnaire (e.g., demographics, variables representing antecedents to potential burden, and satisfaction factors), an abbreviated version of the Coping Strategies Inventory, …

Lds Counselor Ratings Of Problems Occurring Among Lds Premarital And Remarital Couples, Travis R. Adams Jan 1996

Lds Counselor Ratings Of Problems Occurring Among Lds Premarital And Remarital Couples, Travis R. Adams

Theses and Dissertations

A fundamental purpose of this study was to provide marriage preparation providers with counselors perceptions of potential marital problem areas. A structured questionnaire was sent to LDS counselors, defined as members of the Association of Mormon Counselors and Psychotherapists (AMCAP). These LDS counselors rated 29 problem areas that LDS couples, (members members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), might encounter in a first marriage or remarriage. Results (N=231) were analyzed in an attempt to determine the most frequent, most damaging and most difficult problems to deal with in LDS first marriages and remarriages.

Findings suggest that "communication", …

Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard Jan 1996

Nature Among The Mormons: An Ecocritical Approach To Mormon Literature, Gail D. Ballard

Theses and Dissertations

Increasingly, environmentalists have focused on Judeo-Christian tradition as the cause of Western culture's ecological crisis. It is the purpose of this paper to examine the charges against Judeo-Christian tradition and to show how the revealed doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints provide possible solutions to environmental challenges. The resulting Latter-day Saint environmental paradigm will be superimposed on selected Mormon literature to determine how effectively the doctrines taught by Church authorities filtered into popular Mormon culture.

Despite the inspired teachings of Latter-day Saint prophets, Mormons remain unimpressive in their environmental practices. My research will show that while …

The Effects Of Non-Linear Bromide Adsorption On Apparent Macrodispersivity, Eron J. Dodak Jan 1996

The Effects Of Non-Linear Bromide Adsorption On Apparent Macrodispersivity, Eron J. Dodak

Theses and Dissertations

Macrodispersivity estimates are crucial in predicting the subsurface transport of contaminants. These predictions have become increasingly important as the number of contaminated sites continues to increase. In addition, the longevity of many contaminants can affect water quality over extended periods of time.

Anionic tracers such as bromide and chloride are commonly used as groundwater tracers in dispersivity experiments because they are inexpensive, easily detected, and are commonly believed to behave conservatively. It has been found, however, that anionic tracers do not always behave conservatively; sediments with a net positive surface charge can adsorb some-of the tracer.

A weakly non-linear, experimentally …

A Comparison Of Instruction Delivered By Two-Way Interactive Compressed Video And Traditional Conference: Attitudes And Achievement Of Residents In Family Medicine, Yvonne Larocca Lewis Jan 1996

A Comparison Of Instruction Delivered By Two-Way Interactive Compressed Video And Traditional Conference: Attitudes And Achievement Of Residents In Family Medicine, Yvonne Larocca Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to determine if the attitudes and/or achievement of family practice residents differed as they received instruction by two-way interactive compressed video or by the traditional conference method. The attitude survey, completed before and after the presentations were delivered, provided feedback from the residents in the experimental group on how they felt about the sessions. Pre- and post-test scores provided information about the achievement of residents and the possible difference between scores of those who received the presentations by two-way interactive compressed video as opposed to those taught by the traditional conference method. Results from …

Learning Styles And Perceptions Of Effective Teacher Characteristics Among Adult And Traditional Learners In Baccalaureate Nursing Programs, Irene Taylor Henderson Jan 1996

Learning Styles And Perceptions Of Effective Teacher Characteristics Among Adult And Traditional Learners In Baccalaureate Nursing Programs, Irene Taylor Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

The problem of this study was to investigate the relationship of learning styles and perceptions of effective teacher characteristics among adult and traditional aged learners in baccalaureate programs of nursing. Previous research did not clearly identify the relationship of the variables of learning styles and student perceptions of effective teacher characteristics. Also, research was not clear as to the import added maturity had on student perceptions. This study utilized a sample of 281 baccalaureate nursing students which comprised 122 (43.4%) adult learners aged 25 and older and 159 (56.5%) traditional learners aged 24 and younger. Three data gathering instruments were …

A Doctoral Degree In Aviation Science: The Need, Curriculum Content, And Other Considerations As Perceived By Aviation Educators Holding Doctoral Degrees, Barry Robert Beck

Theses and Dissertations

The primary purpose of this study was to determine if there is a need for a doctorate in aviation, what content areas should be included in the doctoral program, and what type of degree should an aviation doctoral program establish, as perceived by doctorally-prepared aviation educators. A two-round Delphi method was used to obtain a consensus from a group of doctorally-prepared experts on the content areas for doctoral programs in nonengineering aviation science. The panel of 100 experts were all doctorally-prepared and were members of the University Aviation Association, or if not members of the UAA, were working in collegiate …

Children's Perceptions Of Autonomy And Success At School, Margaret Laney Leigh Jan 1996

Children's Perceptions Of Autonomy And Success At School, Margaret Laney Leigh

Theses and Dissertations

Perceptions and experiences relevant to autonomy were explored in interviews with thirty elementary students in first, third and fifth grades. Ten questions probed attitudes toward autonomy versus control in school, home and play; and opportunities for autonomy in the same three settings. Observations and school records provided additional evidence. Qualitative and quantitative methods were combined to discover themes in student perceptions and to correlate those themes with student characteristics. The great majority of the students were motivated to learn and wanted to cooperate with teachers and other adults. However they viewed learning as a passive experience where autonomy was neither …

A Plan Establishing Outdoor Classrooms To Facilitate Multidisciplinary Environmental Education, Eva U. Chappelle

Theses and Dissertations

This plan to establish outdoor classrooms is for the purpose of bringing outdoor/environmental education to a small rural school in South Central Georgia, kindergarten through twelfth grade, that has had very little, if any, collective concern for environmental issues heretofore. Anticipated results will be to return the benefits of a "community forest" to a barren school campus and to provide various outdoor education areas where children can play, learn, and most importantly, develop an appreciation for their environment. This project includes construction of outdoor classroom facilities, establishment of the Central Elementary-High School Environmental Education Committee, production of a school curriculum …

Thus, farmers will be able to take the necessary precautions when using them. This investigation was performed in the Laboratory of Biology of the Eastern University Center (Chiquimula) at the University of San Carlos, Guatemala. In order to determine the acute toxicity and bioactivity of the organic insecticides ANONAZO, BOX, AJORIN, and NARCISO, five doses were used in albino mice and three concentrations in nauplii of brine shrimp (Artemia salina). The finney basic program was used for calculating …

The Real Utah War: The Mountaineer's Efforts To Combat The Valley Tan, Robert E. Fleming Jan 1996

The Real Utah War: The Mountaineer's Efforts To Combat The Valley Tan, Robert E. Fleming

Theses and Dissertations

The Utah War and its aftermath changed Utah and the Mormons forever. This change came because of the growing Gentile influence in the territory and was reflected most adequately in the current periodicals of the period. The Valley Tan and the Mountaineer are especially important because their opposition to one another brought many important issues to the forefront of discussion. These issues would be important to the Mormons learning to live and work with those not of their faith and to share in their Zion.

These newspapers were successful in giving to its reader, both past and present, a glimpse …

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady Jan 1996

The Brigham Young University Folklore Of Hugh Winder Nibley: Gifted Scholar, Eccentric Professor And Latter-Day Saint Spiritual Guide, Jane D. Brady

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the stories which revolve around folk legend Hugh Winder Nibley and what those stories mean to the people of Brigham Young University. Folklore reveals who we are and what is important to us. But, interestingly, folklore tends to reveal more about the person telling the story than about the subject of the story itself. People can't remember every story they hear. The ones they do remember are important to them. The stories are important because they fulfill basic needs of the teller. Such needs are a desire to look up to a hero, a need to fit …

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk Jan 1996

Journey: Connections To A Pioneer Past, Judy Shell Busk

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is a record of a journey into the pioneer past both literally and metaphorically. The physical journey retracing the Oregon and Mormon trails was made in September of 1993, the year I was a National Endowment for the Humanities/Reader's Digest Teacher-Scholar; however, my intellectual and emotional journey into the lives of pioneer women covers several years of study. I compare my life experiences with those of pioneer women whom I studied, using geographical settings on the trail trip as memory triggers. My husband, as my traveling companion, plays an important role in this journey of discovery. Major themes …

Eighteenth Century Men's Civilian Waistcoats, Frances Burroughs Loba Jan 1996

Eighteenth Century Men's Civilian Waistcoats, Frances Burroughs Loba

Theses and Dissertations

A number of general studies of the history of eighteenth century men's clothing have been written by authors such as Zilla Halls, Avril Hart, and Norah Waugh. However, a cursory review of costume literature reveals a lack of academic study on specific men's garments and their history. This work focuses on documenting the development of eighteenth century men's waistcoats using the artifacts themselves. The purpose of using extant waistcoats is to study closely their construction and decorative details with close attention to the similarities and differences in the style, cut and assembly of the garments.
