Teaching And Assessing The Writing Process, Gail H. Biros Apr 2000

Teaching And Assessing The Writing Process, Gail H. Biros

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to provide valuable information regarding the assessment and teaching of writing skills. Although students spend time writing stories, they do not write frequently enough to learn the basic skills of writing. Just as teachers learned that children needed direct instruction in reading skills to make "Whole Language" successful, similarly writing must be taught utilizing direct instruction of specific skills.

There are few reliable and valid assessment tools in the written language domain. A comprehensive assessment tool is needed at the beginning of the school year to help the teacher focus on the individual student …

A Controlled Investigation Of Female Migraineurs' Psychological And Physiological Reactivity To Stress During Two Phases Of The Menstrual Cycle., Tricia Cook Myers

Theses and Dissertations

Empirical evidence supports the hypothesis that migraine headache activity can covary with psychological stress and often with phases of a woman's menstrual cycle. However, the specific parameters of the relationships between migraines, stress, and menstrual cycle variations are not well understood. It has been suggested that stress may interact with hormonal fluctuations associated with a woman's menstrual cycle to impact her headache activity. The present study examined the physiological and psychological reactivity of 32 female participants (17 controls, 15 migraineurs) in response to a laboratory speech stressor on two separate occasions corresponding to menses and the early luteal phase of …

How The News Media Tell The Story Of The Yanomami: A Qualitative Study Of Narrative Coherence And The Ideal Audience, Tania H. Cantrell

Theses and Dissertations

The news media link anthropological discovery and the communications discipline. In this study, press stories about the Yanomami Indians of northern Brazil and neighboring Venezuela have been studied and narratively analyzed according to Narrative Paradigm Theory. While not an audience study, plausible interpretations of ideal audience member values and insights into the question of human identity are presented. It is argued that the media are storytellers who tell the audience about itself by telling it about others recursively.

Press coverage of the Yanomami is divided into eight general categories. These include the environment, effects of "civilization," warfare/violence, massacre, gold miners, …

Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake Observatory, Ariel O. Acebal Mar 2000

Testing Of The New Usgs K Index Algorithm At Bear Lake Observatory, Ariel O. Acebal

Theses and Dissertations

The K index was developed by Bartels in 1939 as an estimate of the level of geomagnetic activity caused by the Sun. This index was computed manually every three hours at geomagnetic observatories using the magnetic traces of the surface planetary magnetic field. In 1991, the International Association of Geomagnetism and Aeronomy approved four additional methods to compute the K index; all of them were computer algorithms. One of the approved methods, the Wilson code, recently underwent some modifications. The new algorithm is now part of a Windows-based computer program being developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). After …

The Evaluation Of Competing Classifiers, Stephen G. Alsing Mar 2000

The Evaluation Of Competing Classifiers, Stephen G. Alsing

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation research makes contributions towards the objective evaluation of competing classifiers, i.e., classification systems (CSs) or pattern recognition algorithms. Automatic CSs have been under development for almost 40 years in a wide range of military and medical applications. During this period, scientists and engineers have developed extensive theory and algorithms for classification, but by comparison have focused little on the testing and evaluation of their systems. Classifier evaluation is very important in the fields of automatic target recognition (ATR) and pilot workload classification. In order for military operators to be confident in new CSs, they must have an objective …

Finite Element Analysis Of A Composite Cylindrical Shell With A Cutout Under A Fatigue Load, Joshua T. Boatwright Mar 2000

Finite Element Analysis Of A Composite Cylindrical Shell With A Cutout Under A Fatigue Load, Joshua T. Boatwright

Theses and Dissertations

A higher-order shell theory is used to analyze compressive and tensile loads on a graphite/epoxy laminated cylinder containing a square cutout. The Hashin failure criterion is used to determine failure in the fiber, matrix, or lamination. Once failure occurs, the appropriate stiffness terms are reduced. This failure causes a redistribution of stress, leading to further failure. In order to account for the loss of residual strength due to cyclic loading, the stiffness matrix is further reduced at each new increment of load or displacement. The objective is not to determine the S-N curve for the material, but rather to determine …
