Nearly all organisms experience heterogeneity in environmental conditions that can negatively impact fitness. A common adaptive strategy to reduce the impact of this stress is called facultative diapause, where development and reproduction are temporarily arrested to promote survival. Facultative diapause is characterized by three major criteria, the arrest must be (i) induced by an unfavorable environmental condition, (ii) reversible, and (iii) driven by genetically regulated mechanisms. The aim of this thesis was to determine whether chronic heat-induced inhibition of egg laying in Caenorhabditis elegans represents a novel form of facultative diapause. Abstract: The challenges of multi-robot navigation in dynamic environments, focusing on uncertainties in obstacle complexities, partial observation, and the transition of policies from simulations to the real world. The proposed approach utilizes a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) framework enabling a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR)-equipped robot to communicate with a camera-equipped robot to achieve optimal paths despite their different sensors. Revenge is a multifaceted behavior that manifests in various forms. The purpose of this dissertation was to examine a particular form of revenge known as malicious compliance, which has yet to be sufficiently researched. A two-study approach was used to examine malicious compliance. In the first study, qualitative data was collected from an online forum for sharing malicious compliance experiences. In the second study, 352 participants completed a mixed-methods survey online. Data from both studies was analyzed in RStudio and MAXQDA. Hawkes self-exciting point processes have been widely used in fields such as seismology, finance and social media analysis. Despite decades of research focusing on these processes, several key aspects remain under-explored. These include broadly applicable methods for model evaluation and selection, intuitive nonparametric inference approaches akin to kernel density estimation for probability density functions, and strategies to enhance the performance of generative point process models in predictive tasks. This project was developed to support the Florida Tech Wireless Sensor Network System (WSNS) hurricane research team in determining wind loads during high-impact wind events. The WSNS team objectives included estimating the critical pressure (𝐶p) from observed 3-s gusts during high impact weather events (tropical cyclones). The field work was conducted at a single-story residential home in Satellite Beach, FL approximately 400 m from the coast. During data collection periods, more than 1-million 20-second LiDAR wind profiles were observed.

It all started when our curiosity was sparked by observing light beams from a Multi-Channel Laser Source precisely coupled into a single-core optical fiber positioned on an optical bench in the lab. The multiplexed light beams, characterized by different spatial azimuthal angles, were guided by the fiber, tracing helical paths and producing a bright central spot with concentric rings depending on the launched angles, a phenomenon we came to call Spatial Domain Multiplexing (SDM). Through four studies, this research addresses critical challenges in preparing data-proficient engineers and developing reliable autonomous systems that can operate under uncertainty and incomplete information. The engineering education study examines how mechanical and aerospace engineering undergraduates conceptualize and develop data proficiency skills essential for modern engineering practice. Pilot schools operating in accordance with 14 CFR 141 provide a substantial supply of pilots to the aviation industry. Recent high industry demand for pilots has created turnover among the flight instructor workforce, often considered an entry-level position used by aspiring aviators to build flight experience. This study explored the application of repurposed carpet tiles as a solution to address acid mine drainage (AMD), a common issue associated with historical coal mining that was found to affect certain demographic groups disproportionately. The efficiencies and environmental trade-offs of using downcycled carpet tiles were researched as a neutralization agent in remediation systems. Data was generated using life cycle assessment (LCA) and geospatial modeling. These include 1) Streamlined synthesis of dual-emissive fluorescent-based silicon quantum dots (SiQDs). Pioneer factors are a class of transcription factors that bind to nucleosomes and activate silent chromatin. Semantic segmentation is a task in computer vision that frequently employs convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to learn dense, pixel-wise object classification. Low-level feature preservation and robust, real-time network deployment are regarded as two of the biggest challenges in this task. The former challenge loses low-level features during downsampling operations, which are integral to learning object semantics, posing a seemingly paradoxical challenge. The need for precise small-scale propeller performance data is critical in the ever-expanding world of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Micro Air Vehicles (MAVs). This study explores the possibilities and tensions that emerged when preservice teachers integrated both the science of reading and a culturally sustaining framework when learning about and teaching reading comprehension. Utilizing a constructivist grounded theory methodology, this research draws on data from interviews, student coursework samples, and a researcher journal collected over the course of a semester.
