Compact Antennas And Arrays For Unmanned Air Systems, James Arthur Eck Dec 2014

Compact Antennas And Arrays For Unmanned Air Systems, James Arthur Eck

Theses and Dissertations

A simple and novel dual-CP printed antenna is modelled and measured. The patch antennais small and achieves a low axial ratio without quadrature feeding. The measured pattern showsaxial ratio pattern squinting over frequency. Possible methods of improving the individual element are discussed, as well as an array technique for improving the axial ratio bandwidth. Three endfire printed antenna structures are designed, analyzed, and compared. The comparison includes an analysis of costs of production for the antenna structures in addition to their performance parameters. This analysis concludes that cost of materials primarily reduces the size of antennas for a given gain …

Microchip Thermal Gradient Gas Chromatography, Anzi Wang Dec 2014

Microchip Thermal Gradient Gas Chromatography, Anzi Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Although the airbath oven is a reliable heating method for gas chromatography (GC), resistive heating is needed for higher analytical throughput and on-site chemical analysis because of size, heating rate and power requirements. In the last thirty years, a variety of resistive heating methods were developed and implemented for both benchtop and portable GC systems. Although fast heating rates and low power consumption have been achieved, losses in column efficiency and resolution, complex construction processes and difficulties experienced in recovering damaged columns have also become problematic for routine use of resistively heated columns. To solve these problems, a new resistively …

The Roman Riders: Ethnicity And Iconography On Roman Cavalrymen Tombstones, Jessica Colleen Kramer Dec 2014

The Roman Riders: Ethnicity And Iconography On Roman Cavalrymen Tombstones, Jessica Colleen Kramer

Theses and Dissertations

The funerary grave stelae of the Roman cavalrymen are large, impressive monuments set apart from their military counterparts by the ornate relief carvings which they exhibit. The two most common motifs featured on these tombstones are the rider relief motifs and the totenmahl motifs. Aspects of both the reliefs and the inscribed epitaphs are distinctly characteristic of the Roman military. Throughout the history of the Roman Empire, men in the auxiliary cavalry units were recruited from non-Roman allied tribes. These recruits brought with them foreign languages, customs, and beliefs. Through a comparative study of Roman cavalry tombstones found in Great …

Relationships Matter: Social Networks Influencing Hispanic American Cadets' Decision To Participate In A University Rotc Program, Marc Earl Boberg Dec 2014

Relationships Matter: Social Networks Influencing Hispanic American Cadets' Decision To Participate In A University Rotc Program, Marc Earl Boberg

Theses and Dissertations

The Armed Forces of the United States and specifically the U.S. Army seek to have a racial/ethnic mix of officers (leaders) who match the racial/ethnic mix of the soldiers they lead and the country they defend. Currently Hispanic Americans are under-represented in the officer corps especially at senior levels. Social network theory was used to facilitate understanding a potential officer candidate's network of alters (people they interact with) and their relationships when they are seeking to make decisions related to enrolling in college and Army ROTC. When making the decision to enroll in Army ROTC, there is a complex social …

Dynamic Bayesian Networks As A Probabilistic Metamodel For Combat Simulations, Clayton T. Kelleher Sep 2014

Dynamic Bayesian Networks As A Probabilistic Metamodel For Combat Simulations, Clayton T. Kelleher

Theses and Dissertations

Simulation modeling is used in many situations. Simulation meta-modeling is used to estimate a simulation model result by representing the space of simulation model responses. Metamodeling methods are particularly useful when the simulation model is not particularly suited to real-time or mean real-time use. Most metamodeling methods provide expected value responses while some situations need probabilistic responses. This research establishes the viability of Dynamic Bayesian Networks for simulation metamodeling, those situations needing probabilistic responses. A bootstrapping method is introduced to reduce simulation data requirement for a DBN, and experimental design is shown to benefit a DBN used to represent a …

Investigating Time And Spectral Dependence In Neutron Radiation Environments For Semiconductor Damage Studies, Matthew R. Halstead Sep 2014

Investigating Time And Spectral Dependence In Neutron Radiation Environments For Semiconductor Damage Studies, Matthew R. Halstead

Theses and Dissertations

As legacy neutron irradiation facilities are shut down due to security and financial constrictions, a growing need arises for alternatives that can provide the same or similar radiation environments using methods and/or fuels that do not pose the same risks. For this reason, facilities that provide much lower neutron fluxes and different spectral shapes are being leveraged over longer irradiation intervals to meet this need. However, the question arises as to whether the use of these types of facilities provide a valid comparison to the legacy systems' results. To this end, a model using a system of coupled, non-linear ordinary …

Nation-Building Modeling And Resource Allocation Via Dynamic Programming, Cade M. Saie Sep 2014

Nation-Building Modeling And Resource Allocation Via Dynamic Programming, Cade M. Saie

Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic programming is used in many military and industrial applications to solve sequential decision making problems. This research proposes the development of a model and approach to address the application of dynamic programming in nation-building modeling. Through the creation of component indices to capture the state of operational variables: Political, Military, Economic, Social, Infrastructure, and Information (PMESII), a functional form of a system of differential equations is developed to account for the interactions between the state indices and instruments of national power: Diplomatic, Informational, Military, and Economic (DIME). Solving this problem with dynamic programming provides an improved sequence which describes …

Measurements Of Dna Damage And Repair In Bacillus Anthracis Sterne Spores By Uv Radiation, Chelsea C. Marcum Sep 2014

Measurements Of Dna Damage And Repair In Bacillus Anthracis Sterne Spores By Uv Radiation, Chelsea C. Marcum

Theses and Dissertations

Spores of Bacillus anthracis (Ba) sterne were irradiated with 267nm UV light using small light emitting diodes. The pRB373 plasmid with a red fluorescent protein was transformed into Ba sterne cells prior to irradiation. Following irradiation, germination media was added and the spores were incubated for various times, to allow for DNA repair. The pRB373 plasmid was isolated and analyzed using real-time PCR. Primers were designed across the RFP in the plasmid yielding two amplicons, 245bp and 547bp long. PCR amplification was not achieved for germinated samples. Spore samples isolated using bead beating methods were amplified. Results indicate a quicker …

Effects Of Dynamically Weighting Autonomous Rules In A Uas Flocking Model, Jennifer N. Kaiser Sep 2014

Effects Of Dynamically Weighting Autonomous Rules In A Uas Flocking Model, Jennifer N. Kaiser

Theses and Dissertations

Within the U.S. military, senior decision-makers and researchers alike have postulated that vast improvements could be made to current Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) Concepts of Operation through inclusion of autonomous flocking. Myriad methods of implementation and desirable mission sets for this technology have been identified in the literature; however, this thesis posits that specific missions and behaviors are best suited for autonomous military flocking implementations. Adding to Craig Reynolds' basic theory that three naturally observed rules can be used as building blocks for simulating flocking behavior, new rules are proposed and defined in the development of an autonomous flocking UAS …

Some Chance To Distinguish Ourselves: Junior Officers And The Mexican War, Brady Lamar Holley Aug 2014

Some Chance To Distinguish Ourselves: Junior Officers And The Mexican War, Brady Lamar Holley

Theses and Dissertations

The Mexican War served as a social battleground for issues such as professionalism, racism, and anti-Catholicism for American regular and volunteer junior officers. Their reaction to these issues influenced and changed the nature of debates to destroy the regular army and close the military academy at West Point. Many in Congress and the United States held a deep-seated fear of the regular army that dated back to the colonial era. They feared that a standing army would become a tool of tyranny and destroy a republican government. Instead, many Americans preferred a volunteer system. They argued that volunteers were virtuous …

Embodying Ritual Performance: An Iconographic Analysis Of Burial 38 At The Etowah Site, Amy M. Goldstein Aug 2014

Embodying Ritual Performance: An Iconographic Analysis Of Burial 38 At The Etowah Site, Amy M. Goldstein

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis is an iconographic study of Burial 38 from Mound C at the Etowah, a Mississippian mound site in present-day Northwest Georgia. The goal of this study was to gain an understanding of the iconographic meaning of the artifacts in Burial 38 as well as the significance of the arrangement of individuals within the burial and its relationship with Mound C more broadly. Applying theories of relational ontology, performance, and gender, I build on King’s (2010) interpretation of Mound C’s final construction phases as a ritual event that transformed the mound into a sacred center, melded foreign and local …

Echoes Of Peace: Anti-War Sentiment In The Iliad And Heike Monogatari And Its Manifestation In Dramatic Tradition, Tyler A. Creer Jul 2014

Echoes Of Peace: Anti-War Sentiment In The Iliad And Heike Monogatari And Its Manifestation In Dramatic Tradition, Tyler A. Creer

Theses and Dissertations

The Iliad and Heike monogatari are each seen as seminal pieces of literature in Greek and Japanese culture respectively. Both works depict famous wars from which subsequent generations of warriors, poets, and other artists in each society drew their inspiration for their own modes of conduct and creation. While neither work is emphatically pro-war, both were used extensively by the warrior classes of both cultures to reinforce warrior culture and to inculcate proper battlefield behavior. In spite of this, however, both tales contain a strong undercurrent of anti-war sentiment which contrasts sharply with their traditionally seen roles of being tales …

Air Force Inspection System: An Application For System-Of-Systems (Sos) Engineering, Joseph R. Lay Jun 2014

Air Force Inspection System: An Application For System-Of-Systems (Sos) Engineering, Joseph R. Lay

Theses and Dissertations

The Air Combat Command (ACC) Inspector General (IG) assesses the operational readiness and combat effectiveness of units by evaluating individual wings. Today's conflicts; however, are waged as a joint force. The Joint Forces Commander (JFC) leverages the resources of the entire military complex to achieve strategic objectives. The synergistic effects, created by the integration of individual weapon systems, produce greater results than the individual components. Evaluating wings outside the joint System of Systems (SoS) architecture does not provide a true assessment of combat readiness. Using a case study method, this research examines the idea of integrating a joint SoS architecture …

Different Formulations Of The Orthogonal Array Problem And Their Symmetries, Andrew J. Geyer Jun 2014

Different Formulations Of The Orthogonal Array Problem And Their Symmetries, Andrew J. Geyer

Theses and Dissertations

Modern statistical experiments routinely feature a large number of input variables that can each be set to a variety of different levels. In these experiments, output response changes as a result of changes in the individual factor level settings. Often, an individual experimental run can be costly in time, money or both. Therefore, experimenters generally want to gain the desired information on factor effects from the smallest possible number of experimental runs. Orthogonal arrays provide the most desirable designs. However, finding orthogonal arrays is a very challenging problem. There are numerous integer linear programming formulations (ILP) in the literature whose …

The Subjection Of Authority And Death Through Humor: Carnivalesque, Incongruity, And Absurdism In Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian And No Country For Old Men, Ruth Ellen Covington Jun 2014

The Subjection Of Authority And Death Through Humor: Carnivalesque, Incongruity, And Absurdism In Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian And No Country For Old Men, Ruth Ellen Covington

Theses and Dissertations

Cormac McCarthy's representation of the comic theories of the carnivalesque, incongruity, and absurdism by the antagonists of Blood Meridian and No Country for Old Men demonstrates the unique and ostensible power of humor over (or at least, its awareness of and reconciliation to the absurdity of) death; it also emphasizes the supreme power and influence of humor as a means for destroying other institutions and philosophies which claim knowledge or authority but fail to sustain individuals in times of crisis. This makes humor a formidable factor in determining and justifying the outcome of human interactions and in defining the strengths …

"It's Always Been Home To Me": Obligation And Sacrifice On The World War Home Front In Arkansas, Eric Robert Mills May 2014

"It's Always Been Home To Me": Obligation And Sacrifice On The World War Home Front In Arkansas, Eric Robert Mills

Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the ideology of obligation on the American home front in Central Arkansas during World War I and the World War II national defense period from November 1940--February 1941. Fundamental to the research is historian Robert Westbrook's contention that America, as a liberal democracy, relied on alternate means to encourage the discharge of obligations and commitments during the Second World War. The state appealed to private responsibilities, such as the family, in order to promote service when unable to rely upon the thicker sense of citizenship emblematic of republican ideology. In order to test Westbrook's theories of obligation, …

Love And Marriage: Domestic Relations And Matrimonial Strategies Among The Enslaved In The Atlantic World, Tyler Dunsdon Parry May 2014

Love And Marriage: Domestic Relations And Matrimonial Strategies Among The Enslaved In The Atlantic World, Tyler Dunsdon Parry

Theses and Dissertations

"Love and Marriage: Domestic Relations and Matrimonial Strategies Among the Enslaved in the Atlantic World" argues that the cultural and sociopolitical dimensions of slave marriage were primary issues for diasporic Africans, abolitionists, and proslavery apologists whose lives were intertwined by the cultural and economic connections that framed the Atlantic World throughout the seventeenth, eighteenth, and nineteenth centuries. Through analyzing the interplay between legislation, cultural practice, and political discourse in the early periods of colonial slavery, I first show how matrimonial patterns from Atlantic Africa and Britain were re-imagined by diasporic Africans enslaved in Bermuda, the British West Indies, and colonial …

Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke May 2014

Thinking Bodies And Sensational Minds: Affect And Embodiment In Contemporary Art, Sandra Burke

Theses and Dissertations

The human subject is profoundly interdependent, in relation to other people and to the surrounding environment, both “natural” and technological. Western dualistic thinking creates bounded and oppositional categories and generates a conception of human subjects as autonomous, self-sufficient beings that are transparent to themselves and in control of self, other, and world. This contributes to the ongoing inequalities in society and supports normative hegemony. This dissertation argues that it is imperative to insist on the intersubjective, permeable, and contingent qualities of existence. While this project is preceded by a great deal of theoretical criticism of Western metaphysical dualism, we must …

Reality Vs. Perceptions: The Treatment Of Early Modern French Jews In Politics And Literary Culture, Michael Woods May 2014

Reality Vs. Perceptions: The Treatment Of Early Modern French Jews In Politics And Literary Culture, Michael Woods

Theses and Dissertations

Although historians have written extensively on both the early modern era and the development of an absolute monarchy, the history of Jewish communities in France and the role they played has been largely ignored. Beginning with the French Wars of Religion, this study analyzes to what extent France’s religious situation affected the growth of absolutism and how this in turn affected the Jews. Taking advantage of the fractured nature of the early French monarchy, Jews began settling in provinces along the border of both Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. Affected by economic jealousies and cultural perceptions of Jews, the …

Theses and Dissertations

In 2010, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts accessioned a ritual gourd from Mambila peoples of Nigeria and Cameroon into their collection. Although ritual containers with similar configurations abound in different parts of the Cameroon Grasslands in Central Africa, the VMFA gourd presents particular difficulties due to the nature of its accumulation and the lack of scholarship on the Mambila peoples. Therefore, in this thesis, all the aspects of its accumulation have been considered in relation to the culture and belief system of the Mambila and their neighbors. Special attention has been paid to the interconnectedness of form, function, and …

Multi-Rotor--Aided Three-Dimensional 802.11 Wireless Heat Mapping, Scott James Pack

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional wireless site surveys produce a heat-map of link strength or quality over a target area, usually on the ground plane. In recent years research has gone into using aerial drones in network attack and surveillance, making three dimensional awareness of wireless coverage areas of interest. A multi-rotor drone and data collection module were built and tested as part of this research. Site assessments were conducted both in open space and near structures. Collected data was interpolated across the target area, and visualized as points and contours. These visualizations were exported to a Keyhole Markup Language (KML) for visualization in …

Analysis Of Biological Weapon Spread Through A Transportation Network, Michael V. Macandrew Mar 2014

Analysis Of Biological Weapon Spread Through A Transportation Network, Michael V. Macandrew

Theses and Dissertations

Biological weapons are one of the top five threats identified by the Department of Defense in the United States. While most people commonly associate weapons of mass destruction only with atomic bombs, biological agents still have the ability to inflict mass casualties and panic. By strategically placing bioweapon detection units, known as BioWatch, in various airports, a disease spread could be detected and mitigated before country wide dispersal of the disease occurs. Key cities to invest this program are investigated through network analysis of flight itineraries with large volumes of traffic. In addition to analyzing an airport network, there is …

An initial value threshold is established to guide open interface decisions, based on assessments of 15 historical decision scenarios. Open …

Secure Ads-B: Towards Airborne Communications Security In The Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation Air Transportation System, Richard C. Agbeyibor Mar 2014

Secure Ads-B: Towards Airborne Communications Security In The Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation Air Transportation System, Richard C. Agbeyibor

Theses and Dissertations

The U.S. Congress has mandated that all aircraft operating within the National Airspace System, military or civilian, be equipped with ADS-B transponders by the year 2020. The ADS-B aircraft tracking system, part of the Federal Aviation Administration's NextGen overhaul of the Air Transportation System, replaces Radar-based surveillance with a more accurate satellite-based surveillance system. However, the unencrypted nature of ADS-B communication poses an operational security risk to military and law enforcement aircraft conducting sensitive missions. The non-standard format of its message and the legacy communication channels used by its transponders make the ADS-B system unsuitable for traditional encryption mechanisms. FPE, …

War games are routinely analyzed by the Department of Defense to study the players decision making process. This research develops a multicriteria model that enhances a war game players decision-making capability. The war game consists of a hexagonal-grid map of varying terrain that will be represent as a two-dimensional directed network. The network is obstructed by multiple enemy threats that expose a unit traversing the network to possible attack. The player is faced with the decision of choosing a route to a target node that balances the objectives of following the shortest path and maximizing the probability of success. A …

Complex Vlsi Feature Comparison For Commercial Microelectronics Verification, Michael K. Seery Mar 2014

Complex Vlsi Feature Comparison For Commercial Microelectronics Verification, Michael K. Seery

Theses and Dissertations

Shortcomings in IC verification make for glaring vulnerabilities in the form of hardware backdoors, or extraneous operation modes that allow unauthorized, undetected access. The DARPA TRUST program addressed the need for verification of untrusted circuits using industry-standard and custom software. The process developed under TRUST and implemented at the AFRL Mixed Signal Design Center has not been tested using real-world circuits outside of the designated TRUST test cases. This research demonstrates the potential of applying software designed for TRUST test articles on microchips from questionable sources. A specific process is developed for both transistor-level library cell verification and gate-level circuit …

Modeling Continuous Ied Supply Chains, Tony Liu Mar 2014

Modeling Continuous Ied Supply Chains, Tony Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) continue to be a main weapon used by terrorists against coalition forces overseas. This thesis intends to provide methods that can give coalition forces a new perspective on fighting IEDs. We begin by first developing a model of the supply chain terrorists use to develop, emplace and detonate IEDs. Our model contains four states in which IEDs can exist in: construction (C), emplaced (E), detonated (D) and found by coalition forces (F). We also have rate parameters representing the flow rates of IEDs. Over a given period of time, coalition forces can collect data on the …
