This dissertation explores how Shakespeare’s plays and their film adaptations reflect and respond to the conditions of the Anthropocene, arguing that both forms of art can foster an environmental ethic attuned to the interconnectedness of human and nonhuman worlds. It proposes that the Anthropocene did not begin with industrialization but rather intensified a much older pattern of human ecological intervention, a process that becomes increasingly visible from the early modern period to the twentieth century. This thesis interrogates the heterosexist bias inherent in historical narratives by recontextualizing myth, biblical accounts, folklore, and art history through a dedicated lesbian lens. Utilizing oil painting as my primary medium,  I construct a metafictional world–a pseudo-historical space where the foundational assumption is that every figure is a lesbian until proven otherwise. This inversion serves as a direct counter-narrative to the default lens of cis heteronormativity typically applied to the past. Within this world, I “lesbianize” the traditional icons of Western culture: the heroes, the symbols, and the deities.

This thesis qualifies and documents a new genre of interdisciplinary, interactive theatre called Dodgeballs and Dragons. It covers a brief history of Dungeons and Dragons and Theatre of the Oppressed (the two foundational works for the new genre) as well as previous uses of D&D as a form of theatrical entertainment. After establishing the precedence used to create this product, the rest of the thesis breaks down how to write, lead, and play these shows on a regular basis. The history of Shakespeare in South Africa is that of an often contested cultural battleground, with meanings fought over across a colonial boundary. In Chapter One, we examine some of the many cultural intersections between Shakespeare and South African rewriters. In the process, we can see how Shakespeare came to the region as a tool for colonial domination, but would eventually be used to rebuke the colonial narrative that was conservatively ascribed to him. This thesis examines how the legal indeterminacy of international law facilitates state evasion of accountability through the use of private military and security companies (PMSCs) as proxies in extraterritorial operations. Focusing on China’s deployment of PSCs to safeguard Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects, it argues that ambiguities within the doctrines of attribution and responsibility under the Articles on the Responsibility of States for Internationally Wrongful Acts (ARSIWA) create a permissive legal environment that enables states to outsource coercive functions without incurring formal liability. Sergei Prokofiev transcribed and arranged many of his own works, including excerpts from many of his ballets and one of his symphonies. Among his most famous transcriptions are the piano versions of Romeo and Juliet and Cinderella, both derived from his ballet scores.

This document explores Prokofiev’s approach to transcription through a comparative analysis of the orchestral and piano versions as well as an analysis of the transcriptions considered as independent compositions. This thesis explores the tragedy of incommensurability between indigenous rights and international human rights law. Despite the emergence of frameworks like the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), indigenous calls for sovereignty remain fundamentally unintelligible within a liberal order structured to preserve settler-state legitimacy. Tracing the historical and theoretical evolution of indigenous advocacy, this study critiques the strategic shift from demands for self-determination to claims of cultural rights.
