A History Of The Deseret Alphabet, Larry Ray Wintersteen
A History Of The Deseret Alphabet, Larry Ray Wintersteen
Theses and Dissertations
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints during the years 1852-1877, introduced to its membership a form of rhetoric (writing system) called the deseret alphabet (phonetic alphabet). This experiment was intended to alleviate the problem of non-communication which was created by the great influx of foreign speaking Saints into the great Salt Lake Valley.
The alphabet was developed and encouraged by the Prophet Brigham Young and a few followers. Much to their dismay the members of the Church did not have the same vision of its workability as did its promoters.
This new alphabet appears not to have met …

William Langer's Resurgence To Political Power In 1932, Gordon W. Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
The intent of this paper is to uncover the political activity of William Langer from the Morton County State’s Attorney days of 1914 to his election as governor of North Dakota in 1932.
The first bold signs of Langer’s entertaining political ambitions came during his break with the original Nonpartisan League leaders during the time he served as North Dakota's Attorney General, 1916-1920. The Independent Voters Association helped him to realize a measure of political strength when they used him as a candidate for governor in 1920. Even though defeated, Langer's political career was just beginning. He used the years …

The Cubist Aesthetic Theories Of Pictorial Representation: An Analysis Of The Component Structure Of An Object To Create An Interior Reality, Sharon Lee Duvall
Theses and Dissertations
This paper is primarily an analysis of the Cubistic attitude toward pictorial reality. The project includes a study of form and structure in the Cubists* searoh for a conceptual reality. Twelve paintings of the author are presented each with explanations which reveal several similarities to Cubist thinking.
Some attention has been given to analytical and synthetic Cubism as well as to certain fundamentals of the movement. However, both a historical approach and biographical studies have been ignored. Because art is an aesthetic, this paper is not a problem- result type of study but an analysis in support of Cubism as …

A Design Study In Costume For Projected Dramatic Productions Prescribing A Book Of Mormon Setting Identified Herein As Late Preclassic Mesoamerican Culture, Amanda J. Brown
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to design costumes for twelve characters, selected from the Book of Mormon, suitable for projected dramatic productions. Selection of the characters was determined by the following criteria:
(1) Sufficient dramatic potential for projected dramatic productions must be inherent in the period from which characters are drawn.
(2) Characters should represent various levels within their society.
The problem of creating the costume designs presumed an investigation of environmental factors which would influence the clothing styles worn by a typical cross section of Late Preclassic Mesoamerican society. Origins of the American Indian are briefly discussed and …

A Study Of Public Speaking Abilities Of Lds Youth, Robert W. West
Theses and Dissertations
This study deals with public speaking among teenagers. It is the sincere hope of the writer that this thesis may challenge young people and help motivate them to become better speakers. If it does this then it is partly successful. It may point out some weaknesses and habits in their own style of speaking that are handicaps rather than assets. It may also show some of the strong points of teenage public speaking in general, the writer hopes it will help young speakers want to overcome the trifles of poor speech habits to make their speaking nearer perfection.

Elder John Morgan, the most prominent figure in the early missionary work in the South, was given the leading role in bringing southern converts to the settlements which were to be established in the San Luis Valley. A record of "Desert Journey" will be made with a movement notation system adapted from Motation, an architectual movement notation system developed by Laurence Halprin of …
