The twelve patterns presented in this collection represent the period 1920 through 1945. It is in no way a complete study of the period, but a representation of garments throughout this period in sketch and pattern form. The patterns presented are complete working patterns in full scale with no seams allowed. The garments have been dated according to research into the period. In addition to the pattern, sketch, and description of each garment, construction notes are included to aid in the building of these garments. The purpose of this study is to follow the acting career of Dean Jagger through a list of theatrical productions, motion pictures, radio and television appearances. The study will also include a brief biography of his life and personal philosophies which contribute to the success of the actor and the person.

The study will follow an appraisal of personal interviews with Mr. Jagger and his wife, information gained from the "Dean Jagger Collection" located at Brigham Young University Manuscrips Library, and critical review and interviews with his fellow actors.

The material in this study is a follow-up of a thesis done by Paul C. Richards entitled, "A Study of Evidences Related to LDS Church History as Reflected in Volumes I through XIII of the Journal of Discourse." That same basic format has been employed in treating the last thirteen volumes of the Discourses.

The Discourses contains addresses delivered by General Authorities of the LDS Church and others from 1854 to 1886. Until Richards did his thesis, no one had compiled an index of those volumes that dealt exclusively with history related to the LDS Church. This study …

The problem is to analyze the opinions of the Navajo community leadership towards a religion sponsored program, as related to their exposure to information about the program and to othether social variables. Specifically, this study is concerned with two main questions:
1. Is the reaction among Navajo community leaders towards the LDS Indian Placement Program related to the amount of information they have available about that program?
2. Is the attitudes of Navajo community leaders concerning the Placement Program related to their social economic status of age, religious affiliation, and other such variables?

The play, Samuel Brannan, is the final result of a careful study of the history of Samuel Brannan. The information which has been selected to serve as the base for the plot was gleaned from the works of historians, letters written by Samuel, and individual journals. Although license has been taken with historical facts by the playwright in order to make this play theatrical, the play is based upon authentic happenings.

Although Esquire has been in publication for forty-one years, few attempts at serious critical evaluation of its merit as a popular culture magazine or its significance as a literary magazine have been made. Because it was a magazine which confronted the major political, moral, and aesthetic issues of the 1930's and because it established a new type of male entertainment magazine characterized by literary and sexual sophistication, such serious critical evaluation is crucial to an understanding of life and literature of the Great Depression.

A History Of Latter-Day Saint Screen Portrayals In The Anti-Mormon Film Era, 1905-1936, Richard Alan Nelson

Polygamy was the key issue which acted to popularize opposition to the Latter-day Saint Church during the years 1905-1936. As a result of the continuing controversy over the so-called "Mormon Question," secular moviemakers in this period planned or actually produced nearly forty motion pictures containing Mormon characterizations. Although several important pro-LDS movies were made (some with Church assistance), the anti-Mormon photoplay dominated the silent film era portrait of the Saints. Murder and polygamy as basic themes provide clear reference to traditional literary and theatrical images.

Early attempts by Utah and Church officials to censor the offending pictures were unsuccessful. Following …

The purpose of this study was to develop a course outline to begin the teaching of the American Sign Language at the Language Training Mission in Provo, Utah. Presently there is no program offered to train missionaries to teach the eight discussions to the hearing impaired who use sign language and fingerspelling to communicate. This study attempts to provide such a course outline that can later be developed into a complete training program.

To establish a criterion for this course, existing theories and curriculum guides for teaching sign language were reviewed and summarized. A survey for training interpreters, particularly in …

This study analyzes the appearance of eighty visual religious symbols in the Improvement Era, Ensign, and New Era, published by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1952-1972. The study notes their frequency and distribution as well as noting their size, the medium used to render them and the correlation of their religious meanings to the articles they illustrate.

The findings of this study indicate that visual religious symbols are used and that many of them have a high degree of correlation to the articles they illustrate.

This paper deals with the use of fan-inflated polyethylene film as a scenic medium. Undertaken as part of the design of The Little Prince, produced a3 the University Theatre children's theatre production in April 1973» it is devoted to the techniques involved in constructing scenery from polyethylene film. The chemical and physical properties of polyethylene film are described. Construction techniques begin with the floor plan and model. Upon completion of the model, a light weight polyethylene film is fitted to the set model, cut and marked in the same manner as a costume is fitted to an actor. The completed …

The Problem: The primary purpose of this investigation was to determine if increasing the number of types of sensory stimulation prior to a writing experience would help children to write more creatively and to write longer stories.

The secondary purpose was to investigate the use of the combination of an intelligence test score plus three measures of creativity as a predictor of creative writing ability.

The premise of this production thesis is that Henrik Ibsen's Ghosts, written specifically for the proscenium theatre, can be suitably adapted for presentation in the arena theatre, both directorially and technically. The thesis consists of an historical examination of the arena theatre, Henrik Ibsen, and Ghosts; analyses of the script and characters; adaptations necessary to direct a play in the arena and the director's philosophy in relation to the production; the technical problems encountered in the production; and critiques concerning the successes and failures of the production.
