A Study Of Male Professional Physical Education Student Retention At The University Of North Dakota From 1970 Through 1973, Edward H. Gilroy

Theses and Dissertations

There was some concern among certain staff members of the Men's Physical Education Division at the University of North Dakota about the "disappearance" of physical education majors. The enrollment for certain junior and senior major cl*sses for the fall semester, 1973, was lower than expected and the prospects for the second semester were similar.

The HPER-107, Introduction to Physical Education, course was originally designed as a first semester freshman course for prospective majors. Most of the staff members agreed that enrollment figures for HPER-107 had been normal, or above, for the last three or four years. The question arose as to …

High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen Aug 1974

High School Students Achievement Of College Level Work Through The Phase Achievement System (Pas), Dwight D. Lassen

Theses and Dissertations

Senior high school students in a Human Biology course were given college level work through the Phase Achievement System (PAS), a biology course at Brigham Young University (BYU). Statistical analysis showed significant growth in high school student learning through the PAS. When ability to work with PAS was measured, significant differences between the high school and college groups were not evident. A high percentage of college and high school students dropped out of the PAS, probably becasue students could fail at the PAS without experiencing academic failure.

Kinetic Study Of The Bouduard Reaction, C. Venugopala Rao May 1974

Kinetic Study Of The Bouduard Reaction, C. Venugopala Rao

Theses and Dissertations

Kinetics of the Bouduard reaction (reaction of coal carbon with carbon dioxide) has been investigated in the temperature range 1100°F to 1300°F at atmospheric pressures employing chars from a bituminous coal from West Virginia, a sub-bituminous coal from Montana and two lignites from North Dakota. A simple kinetic model based on the stoichiometric equation C02 + C (K1/K2)2 CO was assumed. Rate data were obtained in an z k2 electrically heated fixed bed plug-flow reactor. The bed was packed with the coal char and the carbon dioxide delivered from a cylinder. The forward and reverse reaction rate constants were evaluated …

Synthesis, Structure And Chirality Of Some Neutral Cobalt (Iii) Complexes, David J. Seematter May 1974

Synthesis, Structure And Chirality Of Some Neutral Cobalt (Iii) Complexes, David J. Seematter

Theses and Dissertations

Structures are assigned to the six stereoisomers of the complex 2 , 4-pentanedionatobis(S-alaninato)cobalt(III) and to the diastereomers of bis(2, 4-pentanedionato)S-aminoacidatocobalt(III), where the S-amino acid is S-alanine, S-valine, N-methyl-S-alanine and N-methyl-S-valine. Adsorption column chromatography on alumina was used to separate these neutral complexes which are soluble in water and non-aqueous solvents. Electronic absorption spectra are interpreted in assigning geometric isomers and C-O bond anisotropic deshielding arguments are applied to proton nmr chemical shifts in making chiral assignments of the helical diastereomers. A comparison is made between C-O bond deshielding and N-D steric compression. The proton nmr assignments are shown to be …

The Effect Of Response Cost On Misarticulation, E. Heather Mackenzie May 1974

The Effect Of Response Cost On Misarticulation, E. Heather Mackenzie

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of response cost on percentage of error production with children who misarticulate.

Six elementary school children enrolled in articulation therapy were selected as subjects. Baseline measures of target phoneme error production were obtained by having the subjects construct sentences, using words presented to them verbally by the experimenter.

The effect on percentage of error production of two different ratios of token gain to token loss and positive reinforcement alone was investigated. Also, the effects during extinction of the three different contingencies were studied. During the treatment sequence, subjects were placed …

Mormonism And War: An Interpretative Analysis Of Selected Mormon Thought Regarding Seven American Wars, R. Jeffrey Stott Jan 1974

Mormonism And War: An Interpretative Analysis Of Selected Mormon Thought Regarding Seven American Wars, R. Jeffrey Stott

Theses and Dissertations

America has been involved in seven major wars, but Mormonism's involvement in these wars has evaded scholarly attention. This has been unfortunate because, for the most part, individual Mormon leaders have taken very definite stands in relation to these struggles, and accompanying these stands have been very definite goals for the outcome of these wars. This, in turn, has prompted many of these LDS leaders to view the wars from a religious perspective.

This transcending religiosity combined the classical Christian wartime positions of the "just" and "righteous" war into one category. The third position however, pacifism, was also utilized during …

The Mormon Role In Irrigation Beginnings And Diffusions In The Western States: An Historical Geography, Kelly C. Harper

Theses and Dissertations

Irrigation has played an important part in the development of the Western States. Its beginnings have often been associated with the Mormon settlement in Utah. However, irrigation had its inception in the West long before the Mormons came to the Great Basin in 1847. The spatial extent of irrigation before this date included limited acreage in nearly every Western State.

Before their arrival in the Great Basin the Mormons had become acquainted with irrigation methods. Knowledge of irrigation had diffused to them primarily from the Spanish in the Southwest. Thus, they were well prepared to begin their irrigation enterprises in …
