The Keller Plan In College Introductory Physical Geology : A Comparison With The Conventional Teaching Method, Robert G. Walsh Sr.

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to compare the learning and attitudinal changes that took place in a college introductory physical geology class between a self-paced method of instruction called the Keller Plan and the conventional lecture-laboratory method.

The sample population was 56 students enrolled in Earth Science 120, an introductory physical geology course at Minot State College ·~ during the fall quarter, 1973. An experimental section of 20 students experienced the Keller Plan treatment and two control groups consisting of 18 students each received the conventional method of instruction.

Four specific areas of investigation were tested: (1) knowledge of …

History Of Four Mormon Landmarks In Western New York: The Joseph Smith Farm, Hill Cumorah, The Martin Harris Farm, And The Peter Whitmer, Sr., Farm, Rand H. Packer

Theses and Dissertations

As the church returned to Western New York in the early 1900s there was much prejudice against Mormonism. The twenty-four year mission of the Willard Bean family was instrumental in establishing a friendly atmosphere in the Palmyra, New York area and in regaining four historic land marks to the ownership of the Church.

It is still uncertain if the present Joseph Smith Sr., home was completed enough for the family to live in by the time the Angel Moroni visited Joseph Smith. Since 1881 the Sacred Grove was considered the woods where Joseph Smith had his First Vision. The term …

For God And Country: Mormon Chaplains During World War Ii, Richard Maher Jan 1975

For God And Country: Mormon Chaplains During World War Ii, Richard Maher

Theses and Dissertations

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormon) is a lay church inasmuch as it has no professionally trained ministers. Because of this, the Chaplains Corps during World War II questioned whether members of the Mormon faith could serve effectively as chaplains. The answer to the effectiveness of Mormon chaplains is found in their performance as many received high praise from their superiors.
During the Second World War, the Mormon Church provided the military services with a total of 45 chaplains, and although only 45 served, they saw duty in all theaters of war and served at such major …

A History Of Kirtland Camp: Its Initial Purpose And Notable Accomplishments, Gordon Orville Hill Jan 1975

A History Of Kirtland Camp: Its Initial Purpose And Notable Accomplishments, Gordon Orville Hill

Theses and Dissertations

This study is a history of a group of Latter-day Saints who travelled from Kirtland, Ohio to Adam-ondi-Ahman, Caldwell County, Missouri during the late summer and early autumn, 1838. The group numbered between five and six hundred when they left Kirtland and had diminished to approximately half that many at the end of their journey.

The official name, "Kirtland Camp," was adopted by the group which was originally founded and governed by seven men, i.e. the Seventies Presidency in Kirtland.

The camp was organized to assist Church members who otherwise would have been unable to escape persecutions in Ohio. Camp …

Glacial Stratigraphy Of Northeastern North Dakota, Howard Hobbs Jan 1975

Glacial Stratigraphy Of Northeastern North Dakota, Howard Hobbs

Theses and Dissertations

Seven lithostratigraphic units (formations} composed dominantly of glacial sediment have been recognized in northeastern North Dakota. Three formations, the Falconer Formation (Harris and others, 1974}, the Dahlen, and Gardar Formations (Salomon, 1975). Have been previously recognized. Four formations, the Hansboro, Vang, Tiber and Cando Formations are newly recognized. Uncorrelated units of glacial sediment are described but not named. The formations are differentiated and correlated primarily by the proportion of crystalline (igneous and metamorphic rock fragments), carbonate, and shale grains in the coarse sand fraction (1 to 2 mm) of the glacial sediment. The proportion of shale grains was. Found to …

The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness Dec 1974

The Relationship Between Attitudes Toward Women's Roles And Field Dependence-Independence In College Students, Patricia A. Torness

Theses and Dissertations

One rather consistent finding from studies involving field dependence-independence is that males are more field independent, more articulated in their approach to certain perceptual tasks, than females. It appears that socialization factors and sex-role identification relate to the development of field dependence or field independence. If society plays a part in the development of individual differences in field dependency, a change in society such as the present movement toward greater equality in sex roles could possibly influence sex differences in field dependency. The present study attempts to assess the effect of attitudes favoring traditional roles for women vs. more liberal …

Solids-Liquids Separation In Coal Solution Technology, Ferdosh D. Nankani Dec 1974

Solids-Liquids Separation In Coal Solution Technology, Ferdosh D. Nankani

Theses and Dissertations

An alternate method to the conventional filtration for separation of mineral matter from dissolved lignite was investigated. Separation was accomplished by the introduction of an organic diluent mixed with the solid-liquid product from hydrogenation-solubilization of lignite and decanted at elevated temperatures and pressures. This method gave separation as high as 88 percent recovery of solvent refined lignite (SRL). The SRL contained ash as low as 0.70 percent versus 0.1 to 0.6 percent ash obtained by filtration methods.

The technique investigated is analogous to methods used in the deasphalting of petroleum residuum employed in the petroleum industry. The introduction of the …

Formcoke From Thailand Lignite, Nara Pitakarnnop Dec 1974

Formcoke From Thailand Lignite, Nara Pitakarnnop

Theses and Dissertations

Formcoke was made in the laboratory from Thailand and North Dakota lignites with the objective of producing briquets of adequate compressive strength for commercial blast furnace use. Optimum conditions for laboratory scale manufacture were determined.

Two lignite samples from the Li Mine, Lamphun Province, Thailand, and one from the North American Coal Company, Zap, North Dakota, were carbonized each at two different carbonization temperatures of 600°C and 900°C. Cylindrical briquets, 1 inch diameter by 2 inches high, were made from blends of the chars and asphalt or lignite tar binder. Compressive strength of formcoke was determined as a function of …

The Survival Of Bureaucracy In An Age Of Accelerating Change, Joseph G. Neelon Nov 1974

The Survival Of Bureaucracy In An Age Of Accelerating Change, Joseph G. Neelon

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to examine the question of whether bureaucracy as an organizational form will survive in the age of accelerating technological and social change which is coming into being at this time. By analyzing the strengths and weaknesses of the bureaucratic form of organization, together with the environmental factors which lend it strength, then comparing these factors with present and projected organizational needs and environmental constraints, the conclusion was reached that a modified, more flexible form of bureaucracy will survive into the future. It will be one of several organizational forms, such as matrix organization and …

Faa/Dod Liaison In Management Of The National Aviation System, Ronald S. Brooks, Jerry L. Beatty Sep 1974

Faa/Dod Liaison In Management Of The National Aviation System, Ronald S. Brooks, Jerry L. Beatty

Theses and Dissertations

This study describes and analyzes military and FAA liaison efforts which impact on the management of the National Aviation System. It begins with the historical development of the National Airspace System (NAS), The system is evolutionary in nature and most innovations have come from user demands and outside sources, Long term government responsibility to manage the system has been secondary to the operation and maintenance functions, There has been duplication of effort due to poor coordination on developing common goals, The military has been the leader in developing technology that led to improvement of the system.
