Theses and Dissertations

The nature and scope of this study was a library-descriptive research project designed to investigate and experiment with selected photographic techniques that can be used by a classroom instructor in preparing 35-mm title slides in industrial arts education.

The specific objectives formulated for this study were: (1) to conduct a literature search, (2) to review and analyze techniques used in preparing title slides for educational media, (3) to identify and select five techniques to be used as the basis of this study by a predetermined criteria, (4) to experiment with the selected techniques used in producing title slides, and (5) …

Linear Limitations Of Two-Dimensional Drawing, Benedict Gi-Ling Wang

Theses and Dissertations

The first section of my thesis deals with the concepts of the limitation of line as a two-dimensional phenomenon.

The second part is an account of my personal exploration both in the technical and conceptual aspects of my drawings using lines as a basis of expression.

An Analysis Of Job Task And Organizational Environment In Relationship To Human Needs, Allen K. Nichols May 1977

An Analysis Of Job Task And Organizational Environment In Relationship To Human Needs, Allen K. Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

Problem: Work for many individuals is a necessity. Most organizations must employ individuals to perform services and tasks so that the organization's purpose is fulfilled. When an individual and an organization are brought together to do a job, a relationship is initiated. How this relationship affects the individual in terms of productivity, attitude, life style and so on, is the subject of a good deal of motivational research. The Contingency Theory of Motivation stresses the importance of a possible congruent relationship betxveen three worksite factors: the individual, his task and the organizational environment. It is hypothesized that if one were …

Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting Apr 1977

Environmental Interaction In Summer Algal Communities Of Utah Lake, Mark C. Whiting

Theses and Dissertations

Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic lake located in central Utah. It is characterized by high nutrient and silt loads and by large algal blooms in late summer and early fall. Phytoplankton samples and environmental data were taken from June through August 1974. Phytoplankton species were identified and then quantified in a Palmer counting cell. Environmental continuum theory was employed to describe algal succession and regression analysis was used to discover interactions between algal communities and the environment. Phytoplankton communities in June were characterized by high species diversity. As the lake environment became stressed in late summer due to higher …

The Dependence Of The Apparent Pk Of Ion Exchange Celluloses Of Ionic Strength, Paul Cyril Gillespie Apr 1977

The Dependence Of The Apparent Pk Of Ion Exchange Celluloses Of Ionic Strength, Paul Cyril Gillespie

Theses and Dissertations

Diethylaminoethyl cellulose was titrated with acid and base in various concentrations of NaCl. The pK values were determined from titration curves using a graphical technique. Two titratable groups were observed from the acid titration curve, a major and a minor group. The minor group, which represented 20% of the acid titration, was barely detectable in the base titration curve and had a salt-independent pK of 6.0. The pK of the major group was strongly salt-dependent and was approximately a linear function of log N NaCl. An equilibrium shift caused by the counter ion may explain the salt dependence. Hydrogen bonding …

Isolation, Purification, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Bacterial Dna Uptake Of Plant Protoplasts, Bronwyn G. Hughes Apr 1977

Isolation, Purification, Scanning Electron Microscopy And Bacterial Dna Uptake Of Plant Protoplasts, Bronwyn G. Hughes

Theses and Dissertations

Protoplasts were isolated from tobacco and barley leaves in sucrose or mannitol using commercially available cellulases and macerozymes. Barley growth and protoplast isolation and purification conditions were optimized so that protoplasts were obtained in high yields free of unwanted debris and organelles. A technique for processing barley and tobacco protoplasts for examination by scanning electron microscopy was developed in which protoplasts seem to have maintained their structural integrity. Barley and tobacco protoplasts took up 3H-B. subtilis DNA, 125I-B. subtilis DNA or 125I-M. luteus DNA as a linear function of time (0-6 hr) and DNA concentration (0-200 μg/ml). Up to 16 …

An Analysis Of Single-Family Housing And Certain Alternatives To Alleviate The Market Depression, Jerome G. Walding Mar 1977

An Analysis Of Single-Family Housing And Certain Alternatives To Alleviate The Market Depression, Jerome G. Walding

Theses and Dissertations

This study is an attempt to identify and analyze some of the reasons why the single-family housing market is in decline and whether contractors can build homes that can be affordable and yet meet demands

The findings of the study discloses why the market in 1973 was in depression by discussing both the situation of the contractors and buyers. Reasons for contractors consist of inflation in building costs, archaic building codes, and high land prices. Reasons for the buyers consist of high mortgage interest rates and high cost of ownership in relation to income. Alternatives are disclosed that some contractors …

Mccarthyism In Utah, Richard Swanson Jan 1977

Mccarthyism In Utah, Richard Swanson

Theses and Dissertations

The exaggerated anti-Communist crusade of Senator Joseph McCarthy allegedly gained the support of a majority of Americans during the early 1950's. It is historically important and interesting to question that supposition by considering the character of McCarthy's following in each state. This study shows that in Utah sympathy for the second Red Scare abounded and evidences of McCarthyism were readily apparent.

Three indicators illustrate Utah's support for the Wisconsin senator. The defeat of Elbert Thomas in 1950 dramatically epitomizes the successful use of incriminating allegations effectively employed by McCarthy. The election, or re-election, of McCarthy supporters and the defeat of …

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Upper Cretaceous Morden Member (Vermilion River Formation) In The Outcrop Area, Northeastern North Dakota, Fredrick D. Wosick Jan 1977

Stratigraphy And Paleontology Of The Upper Cretaceous Morden Member (Vermilion River Formation) In The Outcrop Area, Northeastern North Dakota, Fredrick D. Wosick

Theses and Dissertations

The Late Cretaceous Morden Member is the oldest exposed bedrock unit in North Dakota, cropping out in eastern Cavalier County in the northeastern part of the state. The Morden overlies the Greenhorn Formation and underlies the Niobrara Formation. The Canadian Morden Member of the Vermilion River Formation is used in lieu of the Carlile Formation because of the lithologic similarity and proximity to the Morden type area, and the distance from the Carlile Formation type section in southeastern Colorado.

Three principal sections were measured and sampled at 2-meter intervals for microfaunal and lithologic analysis. A single well was used for …

Western North Dakota Lignite Strip Mining Processes And Resulting Subsurface Characteristics, Laramie M. Winczewski Jan 1977

Western North Dakota Lignite Strip Mining Processes And Resulting Subsurface Characteristics, Laramie M. Winczewski

Theses and Dissertations

Data on subsurface conditions obtained prior to strip mining is useful in planning effective mining and reclamation procedures as well as predicting the subsurface characteristics after reclamation. The redistribution of the overburden sediments is less predictable, however.

Through field observations, the major mining factors controlling subsurface structure and overburden sediment redistribution were determined. These include the geometry of the coal body, pit sequence, pit curvature, overburden thickness and managerial input. At a given location, however, the detailed structures and distribution of sediment types within a waste bank were observed to depend upon the dragline cutting pattern, distance between dragline positions, …
