Development Of New Routes For The Synthesis Of Carbaporphyrins And Carbachlorins, Navneet Sahota May 2017

Development Of New Routes For The Synthesis Of Carbaporphyrins And Carbachlorins, Navneet Sahota

Theses and Dissertations

Carbaporphyrins and carbachlorins are porphyrin analogs in which one of the nitrogens is replaced with a carbon atom within a porphyrin-like cavity. These systems form stable organometallic derivatives and exhibit unusual chemical reactivity. In the monocarbaporphyrinoids such as benzocarbaporphyrins, one of the pyrrole rings is replaced by an indene unit. Although syntheses of monocarbaporphyrins with fused rings have been widely investigated over the past 20 years, a few examples of carbaporphyrins without fused rings have been reported in the literature.

In this thesis, two projects were conducted to further explore carbaporphyrin and carbachlorin chemistry. The first project utilized a ‘3+1’ …

Chemogenetic Stimulation Of Electrically Coupled Midbrain Gaba Neurons In Alcohol Reward And Dependence, Stephanie Suzette Pistorius May 2017

Chemogenetic Stimulation Of Electrically Coupled Midbrain Gaba Neurons In Alcohol Reward And Dependence, Stephanie Suzette Pistorius

Theses and Dissertations

The prevailing view is that enhancement of dopamine (DA) transmission in the mesolimbic system leads to the rewarding properties of alcohol. The mesolimbic DA system, which plays an important role in regulating reward and addiction, consists of DA neurons in the midbrain ventral tegmental area (VTA) that innervate the nucleus accumbens (NAc). It is believed that VTA DA neurons are inhibited by local gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) interneurons that express connexin-36 (Cx36) gap junctions (GJs). We have previously demonstrated that blocking Cx36 GJs suppresses electrical coupling between VTA GABA neurons and reduces ethanol intoxication and consumption suggesting that electrical coupling between …

Causes And Consequences Of Individual Phenotypic Differences In Brachyuran Crabs With A Focus On Behavior, Benjamin A. Belgrad May 2017

Causes And Consequences Of Individual Phenotypic Differences In Brachyuran Crabs With A Focus On Behavior, Benjamin A. Belgrad

Theses and Dissertations

Individual variation defines almost every morphological, physiological, and behavioral aspect of populations and is a fundamental component of many ecosystem processes. Recent work indicates that accounting for these individual differences can enhance our ability to predict community responses to environmental disturbances which is becoming increasingly important in an era of extraordinary global change. However, our understanding of how different individual characteristics are connected to each other and governed by the environment remains limited.

This study sought to evaluate the relationship between individual behavior, physiological condition, and local habitat for Brachyuran crabs as well as the subsequent strength of their predator-prey …

Insulin And Ketones: Their Roles In Brain Mitochondrial Function, Sheryl Teresa Carr May 2017

Insulin And Ketones: Their Roles In Brain Mitochondrial Function, Sheryl Teresa Carr

Theses and Dissertations

The prevalence of both Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is increasing worldwide, and the trends are unfortunately expected to continue. AD has recently been tied with mitochondrial dysfunction and insulin resistance, creating a mechanistic tie between AD and T2DM. Unfortunately, insulin resistance is often increased with aging and therefore, all individuals are at risk of brain mitochondrial dysfunction. Without proper mitochondrial function, the brain will degenerate, causing impaired cognitive function and reduced quality of life. The purpose of this study is two-fold: first, to understand the role of ceramides in insulin-induced brain mitochondrial dysfunction, and; second, …

Multi-Type Branching Processes Model Of Nosocomial Epidemic, Zeinab Nageh Mohamed

Theses and Dissertations

The potency of an infectious disease to spread between different types of susceptible individuals in a hospital determines the fate of controlling nosocomial epidemics. I use a multi-type branching process with a joint negative binomial offspring distribution to study nosocomial epidemics. In particular, I estimate the basic reproduction number R0 and study its relationship with the offspring distribution’s parameters at different and fixed number of generations. Also, I study the effect of contact tracing on estimates of R0.

Theses and Dissertations

The first reported potent agonist for the GPR119 receptor, a potential target for the treatment of diabetes, is 2-fluoro-4-methanesulfonyl-phenyl-{6-[4-(3-isopropyl-[1,2,4]oxadiazol-5-yl)-piperidin-1-yl]-5-nitro-pyrimidin-4-yl}-amine (AR231453). The dynamic interactions of AR231453 with GPR119 using molecular dynamics simulation are of great interest. However, parameters for AR231453 that describe the behavior of the molecule in the CHARMM force field have not been determined. The following study produces parameters by creating model fragments and compares the produced parameters to quantum calculations. The produced parameters are then further refined within the Visual Molecular Dynamics (VMD) program’s plugin program, the Force Field Toolkit as well as Gaussian 09 and CHARMM. Molecular …

Solitude And Our Projected Dreams, David E. Jamison May 2017

Solitude And Our Projected Dreams, David E. Jamison

Theses and Dissertations

“Cineplex” is a creative writing manuscript discussing isolation, escapism, and the way narrative inherently distorts our understanding of the world. Many of my characters are isolated people who create their own fantasies to escape otherwise dreary circumstances. Others try to live their lives by a narrative they see on television or in the news and ultimately discover that reality is infinitely more complex than they have been lead to believe.

Applications Of Side Scan And Parametric Echosounders For Mapping Shallow Seagrass Habitats And Their Associated Organic Carbon, Austin L. Greene May 2017

Applications Of Side Scan And Parametric Echosounders For Mapping Shallow Seagrass Habitats And Their Associated Organic Carbon, Austin L. Greene

Theses and Dissertations

Despite a global valuation of $1.9 trillion seagrass habitats world-wide are in decline—directly impacting the large soil carbon stocks associated with seagrasses. Many methods exist to measure the health of seagrass habitats, yet few apply to shallow coastal ecosystems. Those that do lack spatial resolution (satellite surveys) or do not provide continuous data across large areas (point-based surveys). Furthermore, carbon content of these ecosystems is largely limited to destructive and time-consuming soil core sampling. Side scan and parametric acoustics represent a unique technological opportunity to study habitat coverage and carbon content of vegetated coastal habitats (< 3 m depth). This study presents proof of concept for applications of recreational side scan and parametric sub-bottom profiling sonars in mapping both habitat coverage and organic carbon distribution in shallow seagrass habitats, and explores how these methods might be improved in future applications.

Cenzontle/Mockingbird: Empowerment Through Mimicry, Daniel Garcia May 2017

Cenzontle/Mockingbird: Empowerment Through Mimicry, Daniel Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

My collection is a polythetic assortment of poetry, prose poetry, monologue and drama that serves as a polyglottic exhibition of empowerment through mimicry. Like a mockingbird, whom the Aztecs call “cenzontle” in their Nahuatl tongue, my writer’s voice is polyvoiced. I include in this collection an eclectic variety of voices: personas, languages, forms, styles, and identities—often mixing them, in part to entertain and in part to challenge my boundaries as a writer, to stretch my vocal chords, so to speak, but also in part to challenge the lingering prejudice against such mestizaje—or meeting and mixing of cultures (and also voices)—and …

Theses and Dissertations

Desorption electrospray ionization (DESI) is an ambient ionization technique used for mass spectrometric imaging of biological samples. When coupled with isotopic ratio measurements of deuterium-labeled tissues, DESI provides a means of measuring metabolic rates on a spatially resolved basis. In vivo metabolic rates are desired to better understand diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, Huntington's, and various forms of cancer that negatively impact metabolic rates within different organs of the human body. Although DESI has been used to image lipids and metabolites of a variety of tissues and other imaging techniques, such as NIMS, have been used to study kinetic turnover …

Characterization Of Sufs And Sufe Of Suf Pathway For Fe-S Cluster Assembly In Escherichia Coli, Guangchao Dong May 2017

Characterization Of Sufs And Sufe Of Suf Pathway For Fe-S Cluster Assembly In Escherichia Coli, Guangchao Dong

Theses and Dissertations

Fe-S clusters are one major type of the sulfur-containing cofactors, which conduct essential functions in organisms. The Suf pathway is one of the three main pathways for the biosynthesis of Fe-S clusters. In E. coli, the Suf pathway is utilized under iron limitation and oxidative stress. This ability is important for pathogens to survive. Also, the Suf pathway is found to be exclusive in bacteria, so it is a good target for novel antibiotic design. SufS is a cysteine desulfurase in the Suf pathway to extract sulfur from L-cysteine. It needs the enhancement of SufE. To better understand the catalytic …

Posttraumatic Growth Development: Core Belief Disruption, Event Centrality, And Time Since Trauma, Christopher A. Cook May 2017

Posttraumatic Growth Development: Core Belief Disruption, Event Centrality, And Time Since Trauma, Christopher A. Cook

Theses and Dissertations

Posttraumatic growth describes positive changes that individuals may experience in the aftermath of traumatic events that have significantly disrupted their core beliefs about themselves and their understanding of the world. Alternate models of posttraumatic growth have challenged the conceptualization of posttraumatic growth as personality change, in part due to lack of research that supports a relationship between the development of posttraumatic growth and the amount of time since the traumatic experience, and factors related to the development of posttraumatic growth. Recent research on the role that event centrality plays in the development of posttraumatic growth is promising (e.g., Johnson & …
