This study examines male characters' subjugation of women through religious discourse as a validating institution. Two third world writers' works, Nawal El Saadawi's The Fall of the Imam and Gabriel García Márquez Chronicle of a Death Foretold, explore this subjugation through the social construction of religion, resulting in the preservation of "discourses" such as religion over the years. I use Simone de Beauvoir and Edward Said's theories in my study of how women came to be identified with inferiority while men came to be identified with superiority. Beauvoir's theory addresses women and men directly, focusing on how societies shape women, …

The Experience Of Art: Between Arthur Schopenhauer And Sigmund Freud, Sarah Hammad Feb 2018

The Experience Of Art: Between Arthur Schopenhauer And Sigmund Freud, Sarah Hammad

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis aims to juxtapose Freud's and Schopenhauer's doctrines, in the hopes of reaching a richer understanding of both thinkers. Both Freud and Schopenhauer believed that the way we viewed the world and ourselves was lacking, to a certain extent even distorted, and that such lack was due to our constitutional focus on ourselves, a focus developed from the absolute need for self-preservation. They both also called for a truer less distorted form of knowledge, a knowledge that could reach the essence of ourselves and therefore of the world. This thesis attempts to bring those two daring minds closer together …

An Investigation Into The Test-Retest Reliability Of The Scale Of Accurate Personality Prediction With A Six Week Interval, Jared Marshall Barrow

Theses and Dissertations

The Scale of Accurate Personality Prediction (SAPP) is a measure to determine the accuracy of an individual’s ability to predict his/her own personality traits. Previous studies have demonstrated the validity of SAPP as a measure, and this study serves as one in a series of study on the reliability of the SAPP. To establish the test-retest reliability of the SAPP, the SAPP scores of 22 participants were calculated from two testing trials separated by a six week interval. A Pearson correlation indicated a significant correlation of moderate strength between the SAPP scores from the two testing trials (r=.572, p<0.01). The implication of these results within the context of the previous test-retest reliability studies and limitations to the current study are discussed.

Monitoring Expression Of Metabolic Genes During The Hypoxic Response Of S. Cerevisae, Nikkoli Lueder Jan 2018

Monitoring Expression Of Metabolic Genes During The Hypoxic Response Of S. Cerevisae, Nikkoli Lueder

Theses and Dissertations

All organisms appear to have the ability to sense and respond to changes in their environment. Hypoxia, or low oxygen, is experienced by many organisms at some point in their life cycle. Some organisms such as S. cerevisiae, a species of yeast, respond by dramatically altering gene expression. The result is that genes needed in the new environment are turned on and unneeded genes are turned off. S. cerevisiae has been used in our study because it shares many genes with other eukaryotes, including humans, so many of our findings are applicable to these organisms. Here, we tried to understand …

Duality And Dissolution In The Post-Apocalypse: Nietzsche's Cycle Of Morality In Amc's The Walking Dead, Roy John Gonzales Jan 2018

Duality And Dissolution In The Post-Apocalypse: Nietzsche's Cycle Of Morality In Amc's The Walking Dead, Roy John Gonzales

Theses and Dissertations

Throughout his body of work, especially in Beyond Good and Evil (1886), On the Genealogy of Morality (1887), and Twilight of the Idols (1889), German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche details Western civilization’s slow movement towards nihilism. Nietzsche explains that this nihilism is the result of a so-called “slave morality,” a system of inhibitive values that suppress egoistic desires for the sake of the collective. Democracy, Christian charity, and even mass consumerism are all indicative of slave morality. But because this value system relies on absolute morals supported by a “true world” (God, a heavenly afterlife, etc.), the collapse of these systems …
