Relative Importance Of Ions And Particles In Silver Nanoparticle Uptake And Accumulation In Keystone Estuarine Organisms; Prorocentrum Minimum And Crassostrea Virginica, Shelby Victoria Butz Apr 2019

Relative Importance Of Ions And Particles In Silver Nanoparticle Uptake And Accumulation In Keystone Estuarine Organisms; Prorocentrum Minimum And Crassostrea Virginica, Shelby Victoria Butz

Theses and Dissertations

In marine systems, silver is regarded as being one of the most toxic and readily accumulated metals, and is known to be taken up and accumulate within marine invertebrates, fish, phytoplankton and seaweeds. Reported open ocean concentrations of silver range from 0.1 – 2 ng L-1 while silver concentrations in coastal waters are typically 5 to 10 times higher than open ocean values (0.1 - 50 ng L-1). The determination of silver in marine and coastal waters presents several challenges including low concentrations and matrix complexity of seawater, which creates interferences and other challenges for many instrumental techniques creating a …

Helping South Carolina’S Children Thrive: Promoting Protective Factors To Prevent The Long-Term Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences Through The Development Of Evidence-Based Public Health Policies, Aditi Srivastav Apr 2019

Helping South Carolina’S Children Thrive: Promoting Protective Factors To Prevent The Long-Term Impact Of Adverse Childhood Experiences Through The Development Of Evidence-Based Public Health Policies, Aditi Srivastav

Theses and Dissertations

This study considered Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) to be an underlying cause of engagement in risk behaviors and that the implementation of protective factors, or positive relationships and environments, can reduce long-term implications of ACEs. First, this study examined the empirical relationship between safe, stable, and nurturing relationships (SSNRs), exposure to ACEs, and risk behaviors using a population-level health survey in South Carolina. The results of this research, which demonstrate that SSNRs moderate the relationship between ACEs and risk behaviors, provide innovative evidence for the role of protective factors in reducing exposure to ACEs and risk behavior engagement. Next, this …

Amish Perspectives Of The Genetic Counseling Process, Brianna Teapole Apr 2019

Amish Perspectives Of The Genetic Counseling Process, Brianna Teapole

Theses and Dissertations

The Amish are a population with a high concentration of genetic disorders who have informed our understanding of several genetic conditions. This culturally unique group has special need for genetic services. While clinics have been established to care for Amish individuals, such as the Community Health Clinic in Indiana, little research has been done on Amish perspectives of these services, specifically genetic counseling. Amish individuals who received genetic counseling from the Community Health Clinic were sent recruitment letters and a questionnaire via mail. The questionnaire consisted of demographic questions, a 7-item adapted Genetic Counseling Satisfaction Scale (GCSS), and open-response questions. …

Reproductive-Aged Adults Diagnosed With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (Tsc): Understanding Of Clinical Variability, Perceived Disease Burden, And Reproductive Decision-Making, Diane L. Biederman Apr 2019

Reproductive-Aged Adults Diagnosed With Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (Tsc): Understanding Of Clinical Variability, Perceived Disease Burden, And Reproductive Decision-Making, Diane L. Biederman

Theses and Dissertations

Tuberous Sclerosis Complex (TSC) is a highly variable autosomal dominant multisystem disorder characterized by the growth of benign tumors, epilepsy, and TSC- associated neuropsychiatric disorders (TAND). There is a high level of clinical variability, even within the same family. While reproductive decisions always carry a level of uncertainty, individuals with highly variable genetic conditions like TSC must consider both the chance of passing on the condition and the uncertain clinical presentation. There is currently no literature on factors influencing reproductive decisions of adults with TSC. To address this gap in understanding, we conducted an exploratory mixed-methods survey utilizing an anonymous …

Examining Non-Targeted Effects Of The Connect Through Play Project: Implications For Addressing Mental Health Of Underserved Middle School Youth, Jessica Dandan Apr 2019

Examining Non-Targeted Effects Of The Connect Through Play Project: Implications For Addressing Mental Health Of Underserved Middle School Youth, Jessica Dandan

Theses and Dissertations

Early adolescence is a developmental phase accompanied by several changes occurring in various biopsychosocial domains, associated with an increased vulnerability to mental and physical health problems. Youth of minority status and/or low socio- economic status have been shown to be more susceptible, as they are more likely to incur greater exposure to stressors accordingly. Coincidently, as psychological problems emerge such as internalizing disorders, physical activity engagement declines; those trends seem to persist into adulthood and have been associated with numerous negative health outcomes. Evidence points to the direct impact of physical activity, as well as, social variables such as social …

Endolithic Microbial Carbon Cycling In East Antarctica, Natalie Tyler Apr 2019

Endolithic Microbial Carbon Cycling In East Antarctica, Natalie Tyler

Theses and Dissertations

Microbes adapt to inhospitable conditions by colonizing niches that protect them from severe environmental conditions, making them model organisms in the search for life on other planets. Endoliths are globally ubiquitous microbes that colonize structural cavities within rocks, which protect them from environmental stressors while maintaining access to nutrition and light sources. Despite harsh katabatic winds, extreme temperature fluctuations, harmful UV radiation and exposure to desiccation, endolithic communities have been observed in Antarctica. Previous studies have found viable and abundant microbial biomass through microscopy and the addition of isotopic labels. However, due to the slow metabolic activity of these microbes, …

Exploring Patient Perceptions And Misconceptions: Beliefs Regarding Hereditary Cancer, Margaret Flach Apr 2019

Exploring Patient Perceptions And Misconceptions: Beliefs Regarding Hereditary Cancer, Margaret Flach

Theses and Dissertations

Many patients who enter a genetic counseling session have preconceived notions about why they or their family members developed a genetic condition. Often these perceptions are deeply rooted in personal, familial, and/ or cultural beliefs; individuals typically have a personal framework, or schema, into which they incorporate new information. There is limited research on what information patients are retaining during a genetic counseling session and how they are assimilating that knowledge into their existing views. We attempted to characterize these patient perceptions with respect to hereditary cancer, in order to assess how patients are adopting the information presented in a …

The Impacts Of Episodic Floods, Droughts, Turbidites On Organic Carbon Burial Over The Past 2,000 Years In The Santa Barbara Basin, California, Caitlyn Sarno Apr 2019

The Impacts Of Episodic Floods, Droughts, Turbidites On Organic Carbon Burial Over The Past 2,000 Years In The Santa Barbara Basin, California, Caitlyn Sarno

Theses and Dissertations

Over the past several millennia, Southern California has experienced episodic climate that have influenced the magnitude and composition of terrestrial and marine material that ultimately reaches ocean sediments. Here, we analyze elemental concentrations, stable isotopes, and n-alkane lipids as tracers of terrestrial and marine sources in drought, turbidite, and flood horizons from a well-dated sediment core in the Santa Barbara Basin (SBB) that spans the last 2,000 years. Stable isotopes (δ13C and δ15N), indicate that more terrestrial organic carbon (OC) input occurred during floods relative to non-event periods, while bulk C/N ratios remained relatively constant (~10). Long chain n-alkanes, (C27, …

Building Worlds Out Of Inadequate Materials: Infrastucture And Affect In John Dos Passos’ Manhattan Transfer And John Steinbeck’S The Grapes Of Wrath, David Scott Mathews Apr 2019

Building Worlds Out Of Inadequate Materials: Infrastucture And Affect In John Dos Passos’ Manhattan Transfer And John Steinbeck’S The Grapes Of Wrath, David Scott Mathews

Theses and Dissertations

The beginning of the 20th century in America featured the rapid economic and infrastructural development of New York City, recently dubbed the “second metropolis.” The technological advancements in electric power and automobility made it possible, and economically desirable, for a larger and larger community to have access to the promise of good fortune that being connected to the metropolis signified. The result of this promise was the formation of the subway system and the highway system. Both John Dos Passos’ Manhattan Transfer and John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath explore the space between these poles. In this essay I argue …

Synthetic Lectins, A Diagnostic And Prognostic Tool For Detecting Glycans In Breast Cancer, Daniel James Gordon Apr 2019

Synthetic Lectins, A Diagnostic And Prognostic Tool For Detecting Glycans In Breast Cancer, Daniel James Gordon

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer diagnostic tools have been pushed to the forefront of medical research because a person’s chance of survival is directly correlated with how early the tumor is identified and treatment is begun. In searching for the subtle differences between healthy and tumor cells, almost every type of cancer has been shown to under, over, or neo express glycans, and these changes in the glycan fingerprint can continue as the disease progresses. This provides a powerful diagnostic opportunity that’s works by screening for glycoproteins and glycosylation patterns that deviate from normal cells.

Boronic acids have a useful and tunable property in …

Behavioral And Voltammetric Analysis Of Chronic Escitalopram Treatment To The Hiv-1 Transgenic Rat: Implications For Comorbid Hiv-1 And Clinical Depression, Adam R. Denton

Theses and Dissertations

HIV-1 infection is a serious condition affecting approximately 37 million individuals. Between 30% and 60% of seropositive individuals will develop symptoms of clinical depression. These individuals are five times more likely to commit suicide than non-seropositive clinically depressed patients. Dysfunction in serotonergic and dopaminergic transmission has consistently been implicated in the pathogenesis of depression. Specifically, dysfunction in the prefrontal cortex and in the nucleus accumbens core region have been shown to be underlying factors in the trajectory of depression. Given these underlying neurological features, the present research employed behavioral testing and electrochemical recording in an attempt to elucidate the therapeutic …

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I make a retrospective analysis of the creative process through which I conceived my original solo performance piece, Lady Alhambra: a 15-minute one-person comedy that tells the story of Nila, a Cuban-American vedette and autodidactic spiritualist working at a cabaret called the House of Mambo. I define my creative process in three stages, each classified and described in chapters one through three. Chapter one describes the initial stage of exploration. Chapter two describes the intermediate stage of evolution. Then chapter three describes the final stage which is the performance. Lastly, I contemplate on the future of …

Constrained Consensus In Continuous-Time Multi-Agent Systems, Zheqing Zhou Apr 2019

Constrained Consensus In Continuous-Time Multi-Agent Systems, Zheqing Zhou

Theses and Dissertations

Since the consensus problem is getting popular in recent researches and the applications based on it are expanding in current years! the consensus problem under the condition that constraints exist on agents’ state in continuous-time in a multi-agent system has been studied here. This work combines the projection operator method in a general consensus algorithm to avoid the violation of state on its individual constraint set. When the projection operator works in the general consensus algorithm, the constraint region is divided into the projection-operator working region and the non-projection region. The boundary between these two regions is a circular line. …

Structural And Functional Studies On 4-Hydroxy- Tetrahydrodipicolinate Reductase: Potential Drug Target In Bacteria, Swanandi Pote Apr 2019

Structural And Functional Studies On 4-Hydroxy- Tetrahydrodipicolinate Reductase: Potential Drug Target In Bacteria, Swanandi Pote

Theses and Dissertations

Antimicrobial resistance has become an alarming public health concern since early 2000’s. Infections caused by multidrug resistant bacteria not only increase the mortality rate but also increase the economic burden globally. One approach to alleviate this issue is to find novel drug targets. In this regard, the bacterial lysine biosynthesis pathway provides several targets that may be used for design of antimicrobial compounds. Bacteria use lysine or meso-diaminopimelate to crosslink the peptidoglycan monomers in the bacterial cell wall. As such, we hypothesize that blocking this pathway will induce defects in the bacterial cell wall that are similar to those …

An Examination Of Kinetic Monte Carlo Methods With Application To A Model Of Epitaxial Growth, Dylana Ashton Wilhelm Apr 2019

An Examination Of Kinetic Monte Carlo Methods With Application To A Model Of Epitaxial Growth, Dylana Ashton Wilhelm

Theses and Dissertations

Through the assembly of procedural information about physical processes, the kinetic Monte Carlo method offers a simple and efficient stochastic approach to model the temporal evolution of a system. While suitable for a variety of systems, the approach has found widespread use in the simulation of epitaxial growth. Motivated by chem- ically reacting systems, we discuss the developments and elaborations of the kinetic Monte Carlo method, highlighting the computational cost associated with realizing a given algorithm. We then formulate a solid-on-solid bond counting model of epitax- ial growth which permits surface atoms to advance the state of the system through …

Experimental Study Of Free-Solution Separation Under Pulsed Electrophoresis In Microchip, Xin Liu Apr 2019

Experimental Study Of Free-Solution Separation Under Pulsed Electrophoresis In Microchip, Xin Liu

Theses and Dissertations

Microchip electrophoresis (MCE) is a promising analytical tool started more than two decades. With the characteristics of short analysis time, trace level sample, high- throughput and easily integration, lots of efforts have been done with the transportation of the applications from capillary to microfabricated devices. However, with the complex designs on microchip rather than a single straight capillary channel, the strategies and approaches have to be figured out under the challenges of sample introduction, the improvement of separation conditions and the detection, for instance.

In miniaturized microchip, the separation channel is reduced to several centimeters or less, fast and quality …

Regression For Pooled Testing Data With Biomedical Applications, Juexin Lin Apr 2019

Regression For Pooled Testing Data With Biomedical Applications, Juexin Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Since first introduced by Dorfman in 1943, pooled testing has been widely used as a cost and time effective testing protocol in the variety of applications. This dis- sertation consists of three projects that reveal the use of pooling techniques in the disease prevention from the perspective of regression. For disease monitoring and control, individual covariates information are often of practical interest and yield meaningful interpretations. It is natural to model the outcome of interest, which can be either a disease status (binary) or a biomarker concentration index (continuous), with individual-specific covariates through a regression analysis. Chapter 2 focuses on …

Exponential Stability Of Intrinsically Stable Dynamical Networks And Switched Networks With Time-Varying Time Delays, David Patrick Reber Apr 2019

Exponential Stability Of Intrinsically Stable Dynamical Networks And Switched Networks With Time-Varying Time Delays, David Patrick Reber

Theses and Dissertations

Dynamic processes on real-world networks are time-delayed due to finite processing speeds and the need to transmit data over nonzero distances. These time-delays often destabilize the network's dynamics, but are difficult to analyze because they increase the dimension of the network. We present results outlining an alternative means of analyzing these networks, by focusing analysis on the Lipschitz matrix of the relatively low-dimensional undelayed network. The key criteria, intrinsic stability, is computationally efficient to verify by use of the power method. We demonstrate applications from control theory and neural networks.

“Picking My Battles ”: Examining The Experiences Of Gender Non-Binary Identities Within The U.S., Mika Raylen Richards Mar 2019

“Picking My Battles ”: Examining The Experiences Of Gender Non-Binary Identities Within The U.S., Mika Raylen Richards

Theses and Dissertations

As there is limited research on non-binary individuals, researching the non-binary experience was essential to normalizing their existence. The qualitative research focuses on 12 non-binary individuals who were at different stages of being out. A thematic analysis helped in understanding multifaceted responses from the participants. The data showed that non-binary individuals experience invalidation each day. Heteronormative societies and individuals tend to only see a binary within gender identity and shape their language around it, whether it be from their refusal of learning or a lack of knowledge of the problem. This failure to acknowledge non-binary individuals influenced many of their …

"They Are Supposed To Be There For Me": Using Thematic Analysis To Understand Sexual Assault Disclosures In Hispanic Families, Alyssa M. Hernandez Mar 2019

"They Are Supposed To Be There For Me": Using Thematic Analysis To Understand Sexual Assault Disclosures In Hispanic Families, Alyssa M. Hernandez

Theses and Dissertations

The majority of research available on family communication and sexual assault disclosure is almost exclusively focused on Caucasian women (e.g., Basinger, Wehrman, & McAninch, 2016; Fehler-Cabral & Campbell, 2013; Orchowski, Untied, & Gidycz, 2013; Taylor & Norma, 2012). This is problematic because, of all cultural groups on which studies have been conducted about sexual assault reporting, Hispanics are the least likely to disclose sexual assault, although they are at high risk to experience sexual assault (Castaneda, 2018). In this study, I aimed to understand how and why survivors of sexual assault chose to disclose their experiences to their Hispanic families. …

Synthesis And Metalation Of Internally Alkylated Porphyrinoids, Alissa Nicole Latham Mar 2019

Synthesis And Metalation Of Internally Alkylated Porphyrinoids, Alissa Nicole Latham

Theses and Dissertations

The mechanism behind alkyl migration in palladium(II) benzocarbaporphyrins was investigated through the synthesis of a 23-methylcarbaporphyrin. It was found that palladium insertion led to methyl group migration to C21 and it is proposed that this occurs through an oxidative addition onto the palladium metal center, followed by a reductive elimination to transfer the methyl to the internal carbon. A similar rearrangement was observed when 23-methylcarbaporphyrin was reacted with [Rh(CO)2Cl]2 and resulted in the formation of a rhodium(III) complex containing a three-membered rhodacycle. The syntheses of rhodium(I) and rhodium(III) derivatives of other carbaporphyrins, including 21- and 22-methylbenzo-carbaporphyrins, were probed and four …

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Uptake In An Urban Stream Ecosystem, Nicolette A. Sheffield Mar 2019

Nitrogen And Phosphorus Uptake In An Urban Stream Ecosystem, Nicolette A. Sheffield

Theses and Dissertations

Urban stream ecosystems are faced with high input levels of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from anthropogenic activities. N and P are important to plant growth and stream health; however, high levels can lead to algal blooms and eutrophication, a harmful effect to both aquatic life and water quality. Common urban sources of N and P include fertilizer, atmospheric deposition, stormwater outfall, and leaf-litter decomposition. Common urban stream features such as a flashier hydrograph, altered channel stability and morphology, increase in nutrient output (such as N and P), and heat retention, have been shown to result in an overall decrease …

Nature, Identity, And Pastoralism: Changing Landscapes And Shifting Paradigms In The Mongolian Taiga, Jessica Vinson Mar 2019

Nature, Identity, And Pastoralism: Changing Landscapes And Shifting Paradigms In The Mongolian Taiga, Jessica Vinson

Theses and Dissertations

The traditional environment of pastoralism is under assault from land degradation, rangeland conservation, and development paradigms that alter the everyday lives of Tsataan Dukha reindeer herders in the Mongolian taiga. This paper seeks to analyze the ways in which identity is shaped through experiences of or relationships with particular nonhuman places and beings, and how the Tsataan Dukha renegotiate their individual and collective identities with changing local landscapes that exert considerable pressures upon the social, political, and economic organization of Dukha life. Senses of place and of space are intimately tied to a sense of self, so disruption in environmental …

Regulation Of Plant Secondary Metabolism By Carbon-Based Nanomaterials, Diamond Mcgehee Mar 2019

Regulation Of Plant Secondary Metabolism By Carbon-Based Nanomaterials, Diamond Mcgehee

Theses and Dissertations

Environmental stress can change the metabolic profile of plants. Some metabolites produced by plants are pharmaceutically active and used to treat conditions like inflammation and cancer. Demand for plant metabolite pharmaceuticals has led scientists to search for ways to increase their production, especially for compounds that cannot be synthesized on a mass scale in commercial laboratories. Genetic modification, although a popular technique, does not work for all plant types and is not readily accepted by society. Previous research has shown that carbon-based nanomaterials (CBNs), when applied to model plants, activate genes related to plant stress response. We have applied carbon-based …

Localization And Functional Analysis Of Raby Gtpase In Dictyostelium Discoideum, Lisa Rene' Williams Mar 2019

Localization And Functional Analysis Of Raby Gtpase In Dictyostelium Discoideum, Lisa Rene' Williams

Theses and Dissertations

Localization and functional analysis of the small monomeric GTPase RabY in the unicellular amoeba Dictyostelium discoideum was investigated. I constructed 2 cell lines that overexpressed GFP tagged RabY (OE) and expressed a dominant negative form of GFP-RabY (T25N). Sequence analysis revealed homology to Rab1a genes in several organisms (ER/Golgi localized in humans). Therefore, I hypothesize the GFP tagged RabY protein is within the Golgi and/or Endoplasmic Reticulum. Analysis using immunofluorescence, quantitative and other techniques revealed GFP-RabY (OE) is localized at the Dictyostelium Golgi apparatus and within the endosomes. However, the GFP-RabY (T25N) protein was found to be dispersed intracellularly. Thus, …

Theses and Dissertations

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is an interstitial lung disease which affects an estimated five million patients worldwide. Characterized by progressive respiratory failure and a median patient survival time of three to five years, this disease affects 150,000 patients in the United States (US) and results in 40,000 deaths annually. While the US mortality rate for IPF is similar to breast cancer, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis remains characterized as a rare disease. Lack of awareness and information for lesser known diseases such as IPF can affect factors ranging from proper diagnosis to the advancement of the drug development pipeline. One platform which …

Cultivating Grit: Faculty Influence On Females' Academic Success In Engineering Majors, Lisa Lynn Wymer Mar 2019

Cultivating Grit: Faculty Influence On Females' Academic Success In Engineering Majors, Lisa Lynn Wymer

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the relationships between the positive and negative factors that impact undergraduate female engineering students’ academic success in their programs. While females participate and persist in higher education at higher rates than their male counterparts, engineering is one field of study where gender disparity remains especially apparent, as males continue to outnumber females in engineering degree attainment (Ross, Kena, Rathbun, KewalRamani, Zhang, Kristapovich, & Manning, 2012, Schreuders, Mannon, & Rutherford, 2009, Tsui, 2009). The conceptual framework for this study was based on Tinto’s Longitudinal Model of Institutional Departure, which provides the theoretical foundation …
