Auger Reactor Co-Pyrolysis Of Southern Pine, Micronized Rubber Powder, And A Food-Grade Polymer Under The Influence Of Sodium Carbonate And Nickel Oxide Catalysts, Cody Wainscott

Theses and Dissertations

Bio-oil created from biomass sources do not have desirable fuel qualities. Due to their petroleum origins, plastics and micronized rubber powder (MRP) improve oil quality when co-pyrolyzed with biomass. Southern yellow pine, a food grade polymer (FGP) and micronized rubber powder (MRP) were co-pyrolyzed at various ratios in an auger reactor to improve the bio-oil. MRP proved to be the best additive, reducing acids, creating aromatic hydrocarbons, reducing water content, and increasing heating values in created bio-oil, while the FGP led to a formation of a liquid product containing a high concentration of phenolic compounds. To improve these qualities further, …

The Effects Of Heteroatoms On Energy Gaps Of Conjugated Polymers, Hao Chang May 2019

The Effects Of Heteroatoms On Energy Gaps Of Conjugated Polymers, Hao Chang

Theses and Dissertations

Organic photovoltaic cells (OPV’s), renewable energy devices that can convert sunlight into electricity, have a bright future. Most OPV’s are made of conjugated polymers since they can absorb light and have semiconducting properties. However, the low power conversion efficiency (PCE) of OPV’s is a challenge in their development. The main structure of OPV’s includes three main parts: an electron donor, an electron acceptor, and electrodes. To improve the PCE of an OPV, many factors need to be considered, such as light absorption, the fundamental gap, the optical gap, and the OPV’s film thickness. The addition of heteroatoms to conjugated polymers …

The Reference Autonomous Mobility Model A Framework For Predicting Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicle Performance, Phillip J. Durst May 2019

The Reference Autonomous Mobility Model A Framework For Predicting Autonomous Unmanned Ground Vehicle Performance, Phillip J. Durst

Theses and Dissertations

Mobility modeling is a critical step in the ground vehicle acquisition process for military vehicles. Mobility modeling tools, and in particular the NATO Reference Mobility Model (NRMM), have played a critical role in understanding the mission-level capabilities of ground vehicles. This understanding via modeling supports not only developers during early vehicle design but also decision makers in the field previewing the capabilities of ground vehicles in real-world deployments. Due to decades of field testing and operations, mobility modeling for traditional ground vehicles is well-understood; however, mobility modeling tools for evaluating autonomous mobility are sparse. Therefore, this dissertation proposes and derives …

Sampling Techniques For Research And Management Of Cichlid Species In Lentic Systems, Jason Matthew Bies May 2019

Sampling Techniques For Research And Management Of Cichlid Species In Lentic Systems, Jason Matthew Bies

Theses and Dissertations

Introduced cichlid species are increasingly more common in tropical freshwater systems and expanding in range, often with negative consequences to receiving systems. To better understand, monitor, and manage these populations, improved cichlid sampling protocols are required. The goal of this study was to (1) evaluate diel electrofishing and gill netting sampling catch efficiency, and (2) compare two non-lethal methods for extracting stomach contents from Butterfly Peacock Bass Cichla ocellaris. This study suggests that electrofishing, particularly at night, may be a more appropriate gear for sampling cichlid species in the littoral zone of reservoirs, as gill nets were more time intensive, …

Sedated Versus Non-Sedated Methacholine Challenge For The Diagnosis Of Airway Hyper-Responsiveness In Horses, Amy Catherine Lack May 2019

Sedated Versus Non-Sedated Methacholine Challenge For The Diagnosis Of Airway Hyper-Responsiveness In Horses, Amy Catherine Lack

Theses and Dissertations

Pasture-associated severe equine asthma (EPA) is a progressive condition affecting horses in the southeastern United States. Pulmonary function testing with methacholine challenge (MC) provides a definitive diagnosis by eliciting airway hyper-responsiveness. Most horses require extensive conditioning to accept the instrumentation. Our hypothesis was that MC protocols designed to elicit airway hyper-responsiveness would yield equivalent results in the presence and absence of sedation. Sedated and unsedated MCs were performed on 8 EPA-affected horses, with each horse acting as its own control. Acepromazine was superior to xylazine/butorphanol, resulting in sedation and data collection. Based on American Thoracic Society guidelines, an acceptable ability …

Performance Of Submerged Cool-Season Annual Crops As A Potential Fish Habitat Enhancement Strategy Of Reservoir Mudflats, Giancarlo Coppola May 2019

Performance Of Submerged Cool-Season Annual Crops As A Potential Fish Habitat Enhancement Strategy Of Reservoir Mudflats, Giancarlo Coppola

Theses and Dissertations

Sedimentation and drawdown-induced habitat degradation limits reproduction of structure-associated fishes in flood control reservoirs. Littoral habitat enhancement can be accomplished by planting fast growing crops during winter, when lakebeds are exposed, to provide fish habitat during spring flooding. It remains unclear if species of crops differ in their submerged persistence or habitat quality to fish. I submerged six species of cool-season annual crops in mesocosms and monitored plant architecture over time. Adult plantings of two grasses persisted long enough to potentially be used by juvenile fishes in reservoirs. To assess the habitat quality provided by crops, I evaluated selection by …

Whitewashing Our Children's Education: Examining Segregationist School Choice In The Rural South, Courtney Heath Windhorn May 2019

Whitewashing Our Children's Education: Examining Segregationist School Choice In The Rural South, Courtney Heath Windhorn

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the national desegregation of schools from 1954-1976, white communities across the country formed segregationist academies to provide a privatized education to white children. In this study, I examined why parents in the rural South continue to choose these schools, as well as what this schooling environment means for the ‘comprehensive racial learning’ processes of its white, class-privileged student body. Drawing on 20 semi-structured interviews with parents who chose a segregationist academy in Mississippi as well as 20 interviews with children who attend this school, I found that parents justified their decision using racialized understandings of what constitutes …

Resistance Mechanism, Control, And Characterization Of Glyphosate-Resistant Giant Ragweed (Ambrosia Trifida L.) In Mississippi, James C. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Glyphosate-resistant (GR) giant ragweed (Ambrosia trifida L.) has been confirmed in several states across the mid-western and mid-southern U.S. Greenhouse and lab studies were conducted to investigate possible mechanism of glyphosate resistance in a suspect population from Monroe County, Mississippi. Translocation of 14C-glyphosate in the susceptible biotype was 77%, compared to 12% in the resistant biotype at 120 hours after treatment, suggesting that the glyphosate resistance mechanism for this giant ragweed biotype is reduced translocation. Dose response studies were conducted to confirm and characterize glyphosate resistance in suspect biotypes from Mississippi (MS-R) and Tennessee (TN-R). The ED50 for MS-R and …

Effects Of A 28-Day Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet On Metabolic And Performance Markers In Professional Firefighters, Hunter Scott Waldman May 2019

Effects Of A 28-Day Carbohydrate-Restricted Diet On Metabolic And Performance Markers In Professional Firefighters, Hunter Scott Waldman

Theses and Dissertations

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in firefighters (FF) around the nation. Recent observational studies have emerged suggesting that FF consume calorically dense foods, high in sugar and fat, but low in nutritional value which can exacerbate heart diseases and impair performance. The potential to improve cardiometabolic and performance measurements when following a carbohydrate (CHO) restricted diet (CRD) has gained interest in the literature. To date, only one study has employed a nutrition intervention in FF, yet its’ focus was on nutrient dense foods and antioxidant supplements. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the cardiometabolic …

Theses and Dissertations

The continued spread of Palmer amaranth (Amaranthus palmeri S. Wats.) throughout the southern and midwestern United States is a result of herbicide-resistant populations. Besides being the most troublesome weed specie in several agronomic crops, Palmer amaranth is also host to economically important pests such as tarnished plant bug (Lygus lineolaris Palisot de Beauvois). Pesticide application methodology that maximizes efficacy while reducing selection pressure is needed to combat herbicide-resistant Palmer amaranth. Pulse width modulation (PWM) sprayers are used for pesticide application with the goal of maintaining product efficacy while mitigating spray drift. Additionally, alternative off-season weed management practices such as flooding …

Does Grit Protect Against The Adverse Effects Of Depression?, Jenna Kilgore May 2019

Does Grit Protect Against The Adverse Effects Of Depression?, Jenna Kilgore

Theses and Dissertations

Grit, or the ability to persevere toward a long-term goal despite adversity, has been linked to academic success. Grit may also potentially buffer against the negative effects of depressive symptoms in an academic domain. The current study explores the relationship between depression, grit, and GPA, while also accounting for defensive responding, which has been proposed as a confound of grit but not empirically assessed in this context. We examined how social desirability affects the relationship between grit and GPA and hypothesized that social desirability would moderate the effect of grit between depressive symptoms and GPA. We found support for all …

Drivers Of Genomic Divergence During Speciation In Heliconius Butterflies, Jared Cole May 2019

Drivers Of Genomic Divergence During Speciation In Heliconius Butterflies, Jared Cole

Theses and Dissertations

Identifying the forces responsible for driving genomic divergence during speciation is a major goal of research in evolutionary biology. Thus, many efforts have focused on disentangling these forces by modeling the evolutionary histories of interacting populations. Here, population genomic datasets and a diffusion approximation method is used to model the demographic scenarios that influence divergence between Heliconius erato and the incipient species Heliconius himera. The models support an isolation-with-migration scenario, with relatively low and heterogeneous rates of introgression between H. himera and H. erato cyrbia. Additionally, the models suggest a history of selection driving divergence and introgression patterns among H. …

Price Premiums For Growing Higher Quality Southern Pine Sawtimber On Longer Rotation Ages, Arun Regmi May 2019

Price Premiums For Growing Higher Quality Southern Pine Sawtimber On Longer Rotation Ages, Arun Regmi

Theses and Dissertations

Different management regimes consisting of range of site indices and planting densities were simulated to evaluate price premiums required for growing high-quality southern pines across the southern United States. Optimal management regimes were identified maximizing the land expectation value. Growing high-quality pines on longer rotations are economically feasible, however, forest landowners need premiums which ranged from $1.40/ton to $9.81/ton for 10-year rotation extension and increased significantly with rotation ages. In uneven-aged management, price premiums for 5-year cutting cycle extension ranged from $1.75/ton to $2.25/ton. Additionally, sawmill’s willingness-to-pay price premiums for high-quality pine sawtimber were calculated using a mail survey. Sawmills …

The overall aim of this cross-sectional study was to examine the influence of dairy consumption on body composition, specifically body fat percentage, among college-aged individuals in Mississippi. Total dairy consumption, type of dairy, and the relationship between race and sex were examined in 580 participants aged 18-26 years. Two-tailed correlation tests revealed a nonsignificant relationship between frequency of dairy consumption and body fat percentage among males, (r = .02, p = .68, n = 98) and females, …

Developing Commercial-Scale Low-Salinity Culture Protocols For Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Brittany Morgan Chesser May 2019

Developing Commercial-Scale Low-Salinity Culture Protocols For Gulf Killifish, Fundulus Grandis, Brittany Morgan Chesser

Theses and Dissertations

Gulf Killifish Fundulus grandis is an estuarine species used as a live bait for marine sport fishes, native from Veracruz, Mexico, along the Northern Gulf of Mexico coast, to the eastern coast of Florida. Culture protocols are established, but Gulf Killifish have not been fully adopted as a commercially produced species by producers, possibly due to economic efficiency and needs for advances related to inland production. Therefore, production methods from spawning in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) to grow-out to market size in earthen ponds were examined. Increasing broodstock density or spawning substrate surface area did not increase egg production in …

Efficacy Of Novel Pyridinium Oximes Against Two Organophosphates In Female Sprague Dawley Rats, Jason Michael Garcia

Theses and Dissertations

Anticholinesterase organophosphate (OP) compounds were developed as insecticides and are also used as nerve agents in chemical warfare. Treatment against acute OP toxicity includes oximes which reactivate phosphorylated acetylcholinesterase (AChE) restoring enzymatic activity. The oxime currently approved for use in the U.S., pralidoxime (2-PAM), has limited efficacy penetrating the blood-brain barrier. Our laboratory has developed novel substituted phenoxyalkyl pyridinium oximes (US Patent 9,227,937) designed to more effectively penetrate the central nervous system. This research investigated any differences in oxime reactivation among four age/sex groups and also survivability in adult female Sprague Dawley rats challenged with a lethal dose of OP. …

Evaluation Of Apex For Simulating The Effects Of Tillage Practices In Tropical Soils, Laura Wilson May 2019

Evaluation Of Apex For Simulating The Effects Of Tillage Practices In Tropical Soils, Laura Wilson

Theses and Dissertations

Tillage practices on agricultural fields have an impact on not only the amount of soil erosion from the fields, but also on the hydrologic and other environmental characteristics of the land. This erosion takes away soil that is necessary for sustainable agriculture, and the sediment and nutrient removal from the fields can pollute surrounding waterbodies. The Llanos Orientales of Colombia used to be a region of extended savannas and native fragile ecosystems dedicated to extended cattle ranch that has been transitioning to crop production. Agricultural expansion in this area, involving mechanization, could importantly accelerate the degradation of soils, limiting the …

Assessing The Early Growth Performance And Survival Of Two Oak Species And Three Planting Stocks On Hurricane Katrina Damaged Land, Charles Holden Miles May 2019

Assessing The Early Growth Performance And Survival Of Two Oak Species And Three Planting Stocks On Hurricane Katrina Damaged Land, Charles Holden Miles

Theses and Dissertations

Hurricane Katrina had a devastating impact on bottomland hardwood forests in 2005 resulting in damage to nearly 1.2 billion cubic meters of timber. Following such a natural disaster, natural regeneration is typically not a viable option because the seed source has been destroyed on site. Therefore, an economically efficient method of artificial regeneration is considered the most appropriate technique for reforesting these damaged areas. However, few studies have evaluated comparative research that examined early survival and growth performance of various oak species and stock types in such planting settings. This project was implemented in an effort to expand upon what …

Behavioral Ecology And Conservation Genetics Of The Sister Islands Rock Iguana, Jeanette Blair Moss May 2019

Behavioral Ecology And Conservation Genetics Of The Sister Islands Rock Iguana, Jeanette Blair Moss

Theses and Dissertations

Insular fauna face disproportionate risks of extinction owing to direct human perturbation and intrinsic factors that are enhanced at small population sizes. Currently, our understanding of the processes that promote long-term persistence of naturally small populations and the cryptic processes that may contribute to accelerating their decline is limited by lack of empirical investigations across the range of natural conditions. Implementing effective protections for rare and understudied taxa requires the identification and examination of factors that limit recruitment at critical life stages. Predicting population health outcomes of future perturbations further necessitates an understanding a taxon’s behavioral ecology. Finally, cryptic threats …

An Investigation Of Variables Associated With Mortality In A Broiler Complex In Mississippi, Leslie B. Johnson May 2019

An Investigation Of Variables Associated With Mortality In A Broiler Complex In Mississippi, Leslie B. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

A southern Mississippi broiler complex in an area of high poultry density experienced persistent lower livability and growth performance compared with company averages for the state. It was hypothesized that circulating Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV) challenge exacerbated by underlying Infectious Bursal Disease (IBD)-induced immune suppression was the primary contributor to reduced livability and live production performance on certain farms, and that disease challenges were most prevalent on farms in areas of high bird density. A retrospective analysis of data from a three-year period (March 2014 through March 2017) was designed to investigate the role of disease, settlement, geographic, and weather …

An Unsupervised Machine-Learning Framework For Behavioral Classification From Animal-Borne Accelerometers, Jane Elizabeth Dentinger May 2019

An Unsupervised Machine-Learning Framework For Behavioral Classification From Animal-Borne Accelerometers, Jane Elizabeth Dentinger

Theses and Dissertations

Studies of animal spatial distributions typically use prior knowledge of animal habitat requirements and behavioral ecology to deduce the most likely explanations of observed habitat use. Animal-borne accelerometers can be used to distinguish behaviors which allows us to incorporate in situ behavior into our understanding of spatial distributions. Past research has focused on using supervised machine-learning, which requires a priori specification of behavior to identify signals whereas unsupervised approaches allow the model to identify as many signal types as permitted by the data. The following framework couples direct observation to behavioral clusters identified from unsupervised machine learning on a large …
