What Is The Relationship Between Religiosity, Self-Perceived Problematic Pornography Use, And Depression Over Time?, Meghan Elizabeth Maddock
What Is The Relationship Between Religiosity, Self-Perceived Problematic Pornography Use, And Depression Over Time?, Meghan Elizabeth Maddock
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies suggest that religious individuals are more likely than non-religious individuals to perceive their pornography use as problematic. For our six-month longitudinal study, we recruited a sample of adults from Turkprime.com. We hypothesized that more religious individuals who use pornography at baseline would report higher self-perceived problematic pornography use at three months, which would be associated with higher depression at six months. We constructed and validated our own measure of self-perceived problematic pornography use, which included two factors: excessive pornography use and compulsive pornography use. We ran two separate structural equation models, one with excessive use at three months …
Geological And Geochemical Controls On Non-Tuberculous Mycobacterium Transmission: Examples From Hawaii, Schuyler Thomas Robinson
Geological And Geochemical Controls On Non-Tuberculous Mycobacterium Transmission: Examples From Hawaii, Schuyler Thomas Robinson
Theses and Dissertations
The opportunistic environmental microbes, non-tuberculous Mycobacterium (NTM), pose an increasing risk of disease and death in both immunodeficient and immunocompetent individuals in the USA and across the world. NTM lung disease is particularly prevalent in Hawaii, although the modes of NTM acquisition and transport in Hawaii are not fully understood. This study evaluated 149 soil and 50 water samples across the Hawaiian Islands to determine geochemical factors controlling NTM. Non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) and principal component analyses (PCA) of modern soils show variables such as Total Organic Carbon (TOC), pH, P, mafic silicate minerals, and Pb seem to control NTM …

Methodology For Comparison Of Algorithms For Real-World Multi-Objective Optimization Problems: Space Surveillance Network Design, Troy B. Dontigney
Theses and Dissertations
Space Situational Awareness (SSA) is an activity vital to protecting national and commercial satellites from damage or destruction due to collisions. Recent research has demonstrated a methodology using evolutionary algorithms (EAs) which is intended to develop near-optimal Space Surveillance Network (SSN) architectures in the sense of low cost, low latency, and high resolution. That research is extended here by (1) developing and applying a methodology to compare the performance of two or more algorithms against this problem, and (2) analyzing the effects of using reduced data sets in those searches. Computational experiments are presented in which the performance of five …

Enclosures And Dichotomies: Coexistence Vs. Distance In The Poems Of John Clare, Jordan P. Finn
Enclosures And Dichotomies: Coexistence Vs. Distance In The Poems Of John Clare, Jordan P. Finn
Theses and Dissertations
John Clare’s poetry emphasizes an affinity with environment by suspending the distinction between the inside (subject) and the outside (object). Clare’s identification with objects and perception rather than subjects and aesthetics renders his work as a prescient and radical example of ecological poetry in the Romantic period. Raymond Williams’ “green language” and Timothy Morton’s ambient poetics both cite Clare as an ideal figure for their above theories and evoke Clare as a writer who positions the environment as governing thought rather than thought governing the environment. This thesis especially relates Clare to Morton’s Ecology without Nature, a study of …

Finite Element Analysis Of Traumatic Brain Injury Due To Small Unmanned Aircraft System Impacts On The Human Head, Alex Nelson Smith
Theses and Dissertations
A biofidelic finite element model was developed from an acquired set of CT scans for a range of human head and UAS impacts to provide simulations of multiple velocity scenarios of impact severity at four impact orientations on the human head. The hypothesis was that a correlation existed between the total amounts of kinetic energy of the impact from the UAS and human head collision, as well as that location of impact plays a role in the injury risk sustained. Linear acceleration, angular velocity, and pressure data values were calculated for each individual simulated case and then further correlated to …

Implant-Related Osteomyelitis Models For The Assessment Of Bacteriophage Therapeutics, Leah Kelley Horstemeyer
Theses and Dissertations
Antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria continue to increase in prevalence, hindering the ability of clinicians to treat infection. One disease exacerbated by this trend is osteomyelitis, or bone infection. When osteomyelitis is induced by these antibiotic resistant strains, patients can experience prolonged hospital visits, greater economic burdens, amputation, and even death. Due to the limitations of antibiotics to clear these infections, we sought to identify new therapeutic options for osteomyelitis. Our aim was to first develop an in vivo implant-related model of osteomyelitis. We then wanted to explore the potential of novel CRISPR-Cas9 modified bacteriophage to treat infection. In vitro …
