Developing Understanding Of The Chain Rule, Implicit Differentiation, And Related Rates: Towards A Hypothetical Learning Trajectory Rooted In Nested Multivariation, Haley Paige Jeppson Jul 2019

Developing Understanding Of The Chain Rule, Implicit Differentiation, And Related Rates: Towards A Hypothetical Learning Trajectory Rooted In Nested Multivariation, Haley Paige Jeppson

Theses and Dissertations

There is an overemphasis on procedures and manipulation of symbols in calculus and not enough emphasis on conceptual understanding of the subject. Specifically, students struggle to understand and correctly apply concepts in calculus such as the chain rule, implicit differentiation, and related rates. Students can learn mathematics more deeply when they make connections between different mathematical ideas. I have hypothesized that students can make powerful connections between the chain rule, implicit differentiation, and related rates through the mathematical concept of nested multivariation. Based on this hypothesis, I created a hypothetical learning trajectory (HLT) rooted in nested multivariation for students to …

Exclusive Dining: Immigration And Restaurants In Chicago During The Era Of Chinese Exclusion, 1893-1933, Samuel C. King

Theses and Dissertations

The central aim of this project is to describe and explicate the process by which the status of Chinese restaurants in the United States underwent a dramatic and complete reversal in American consumer culture between the 1890s and the 1930s. In pursuit of this aim, this research demonstrates the connection that historically existed between restaurants, race, immigration, and foreign affairs during the Chinese Exclusion era. The movement of Chinese American restaurants and cuisine from the fringes to the center of white consumer culture was not a process dictated exclusively by the tastes of non-Chinese Americans or by the ability of …

Inhibition Of Return In Visual Search: Disentangling Overlapping Contributions With Event-Related Potentials, Allison Michelle Pierce Jul 2019

Inhibition Of Return In Visual Search: Disentangling Overlapping Contributions With Event-Related Potentials, Allison Michelle Pierce

Theses and Dissertations

Inhibition of return (IOR) refers to the finding that responses to previously attended locations are slower than those to previously unattended locations. Despite over 30 years of research on IOR, there is still no consensus in the field regarding what the underlying mechanism of this effect is. Although IOR is traditionally studied within spatial cueing paradigms, this effect is thought to reflect a mechanism that facilitates efficient visual search. The following studies explored the hypothesis that multiple processes contribute to the IOR effect in visual search and examined whether these are the same processes that result in IOR in cueing …

Investigation Of Energy-Related Wastewater Impacts On Disinfection By-Product Formation In Drinking Water, Hannah K. Liberatore Jul 2019

Investigation Of Energy-Related Wastewater Impacts On Disinfection By-Product Formation In Drinking Water, Hannah K. Liberatore

Theses and Dissertations

Elevated bromide and iodide in drinking water sources contribute to the formation of toxic brominated and iodinated disinfection by-products (DBPs) during drinking water treatment. Energy extraction and utilization processes, including hydraulic fracturing (HF) and coal-fired power plants (CFPPs), produce wastewaters with bromide/iodide levels on the order of tens to thousands of mg/L. These wastes have the potential to impact drinking water sources through both intentional (e.g., direct discharge) and accidental (e.g., basin overflow, spill) release pathways. This research focuses on a combination of quantitative and non-targeted approaches to assess DBP formation impacts from HF and CFPP wastewaters, with complementary toxicity …

Flame Spray Pyrolysis Of Ce-Mn Solid Solutions For Catalytic Applications, Nicole Cordonnier Jul 2019

Flame Spray Pyrolysis Of Ce-Mn Solid Solutions For Catalytic Applications, Nicole Cordonnier

Theses and Dissertations

Flame spray pyrolysis (FSP) is a method of quickly synthesizing active particles in a flame. Precursors are dissolved in a flammable organic solvent before being sprayed into the flame environment where they rapidly burn. Particle formation occurs on the order of 10 milliseconds. FSP has been shown to be a viable method of producing materials on an industrial scale, capable of producing grams of particles per minute. Metastable structures which exist in the liquid phase, but are difficult to synthesize using traditional impregnation methods can be formed with FSP due to fast quenching times. For example, solid solutions of Ce-Zr …

Mast cells (MCs) are well known for their implications in allergic reactions. They are also known to have multiple functions in the innate and adaptive immune system. Their activation plays an essential role in many aspects of physiological and pathological conditions. Allergies are considered chronic conditions that affect more than 60 million people in the U.S. These diseases are driven by the activation of MCs in response to IgE-mediated antigen, rendering these cells as targets for the management of allergies and asthma. Therefore, this research considers the understanding of their activation and the regulation of their response to be an …

Elaborative Rehearsal: An Examination Of Usage, Perceptions Of Utility, And Differences In Metacognition And Test Performance, Tori Kim Norris Jul 2019

Elaborative Rehearsal: An Examination Of Usage, Perceptions Of Utility, And Differences In Metacognition And Test Performance, Tori Kim Norris

Theses and Dissertations

This action research study explored the use of elaborative rehearsal as an intervention and examined differences in metacognition and test performance among college students in a general psychology course. Metacognitive processes are crucial for adequate comprehension. Students often come into college having very little metacognition, knowledge about different strategies, different cognitive tasks, and sometimes even accurate knowledge about how they learn (Pintrich, 2002). Common metacognition strategies are note-taking, summarizing, finding main ideas, writing to learn, self-questioning, outlining, previewing, reflecting, reciting and reviewing (Kisac & Budak, 2014). Elaborative rehearsal is a metacognitive learning strategy that encompasses many of these components. Unfortunately, …

Machine Learning Methods For Rapid Inspection Of Automated Fiber Placement Manufactured Composite Structures, Christopher Sacco Jul 2019

Machine Learning Methods For Rapid Inspection Of Automated Fiber Placement Manufactured Composite Structures, Christopher Sacco

Theses and Dissertations

The advanced manufacturing capabilities provided through the automated fiber placement (AFP) system has allowed for faster layup time and more consistent production across a number of different geometries. This contributes to the modern production of large composite structures and the widespread adaptation of composites in industry in general and aerospace in particular. However, the automation introduced in this process increases the difficulty of quality assurance efforts and inspection. The AFP process can induce a number of manufacturing defects including wrinkles, twists, gaps, and overlaps. The manual identification of these defects is often laborious and requires a measure of expert knowledge. …

Experimental Methods And Techniques For Improved Biomechanical Characterization Of Diverse Murine Aortopathies, Brooks Alexander Lane Jul 2019

Experimental Methods And Techniques For Improved Biomechanical Characterization Of Diverse Murine Aortopathies, Brooks Alexander Lane

Theses and Dissertations

Aortopathies constitute a broad class of diseases affecting the aorta – the largest artery responsible for distributing oxygenated blood to the systemic circulation. Specifically, aortic aneurysms (AAs) are described as a focal dilation of the vascular wall exceeding 50% of the normal vessel diameter. Ultimately AAs may stabilize, dissect, or rupture, with the latter virtually ensuring mortality. Currently clinicians consider prophylactic intervention based on size and growth-rate criteria that have been estimated from large-cohort statistical analyses. These criteria, however, fail to address the underlying mechanisms. Furthermore, 13% of small-to-mid sized AAs have been found to rupture prior to meeting these …

The Influence Of Adhd Symptoms And Social Functioning On Anxiety And Depression Symptoms In College Students, Danielle Willis Jul 2019

The Influence Of Adhd Symptoms And Social Functioning On Anxiety And Depression Symptoms In College Students, Danielle Willis

Theses and Dissertations

Previous research has shown that Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is associated with impaired social functioning in children and adolescents. ADHD and poor social functioning have been shown to be separately associated with increased anxiety and depression symptoms as well. However, little research has examined these associations among college students. College is a transitional period of increased stress and exposure to new social situations for all students, but may be even more challenging for those with ADHD, who are already at risk for increased internalizing problems and impairment in social functioning. The current study aimed to examine the influence of ADHD symptoms …

Fostering Agency In Single-Gender, Middle Level Ela Classrooms: A Descriptive Multiple-Case Study, Jennifer V. Stowe Jul 2019

Fostering Agency In Single-Gender, Middle Level Ela Classrooms: A Descriptive Multiple-Case Study, Jennifer V. Stowe

Theses and Dissertations

Students’ sense of agency or self-efficacy has been linked to student achievement levels (Goodman & Eren, 2013; Johnston, 2004; Skinner, Wellborne, & Connell, 1990). Research has also established that teachers position their students as having agency in the context of the classroom, frequently by the ways that they use language (Johnston, 2004; Paulson & Theado, 2014). However, little, if any, extant research describes teacher language as it relates to agency within the middle level English Language Arts (ELA) classroom. Additionally, studies concerning agency rarely address the ways in which gender may influence the ways in which teachers position their students …

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation project is to add to the growing literature about the multi-faceted aspects of colorectal cancer (CRC) prevention and related disparities. We focused on the spatial distribution of facilities performing screening services to identify areas that underutilize colonoscopy screening. Next, we examined how the food and physical activity environment affects precursors of CRC by considering plausible pathways. Finally, we explored if access to health insurance reduced the racial disparity of receiving a timely surveillance colonoscopy after a CRC diagnosis.

We utilized the SC Ambulatory Surgery Discharge Database, an all-payer, population-based outpatient dataset with colonoscopy records from …

Investigating The Neural Correlates Of Nicotine Withdrawal Phenotypes In Mice: Involvement Of Creb-Dependent Nrg3-Erbb4 Signaling In Mediating Anxiety-Like Behavior, Miranda Fisher Jul 2019

Investigating The Neural Correlates Of Nicotine Withdrawal Phenotypes In Mice: Involvement Of Creb-Dependent Nrg3-Erbb4 Signaling In Mediating Anxiety-Like Behavior, Miranda Fisher

Theses and Dissertations

Addiction to nicotine and the ability to quit smoking are influenced by genetic factors. Therefore, it is important to understand how genes and drugs of abuse mechanistically impact each other. One well-characterized protein responsible for regulating both response to drugs and gene expression is the transcription factor cAMP response element-binding protein (CREB). Work from our lab indicates that hippocampal specific alterations in CREB signaling and synaptic plasticity underlie certain nicotine withdrawal (WD) phenotypes in a region-specific manner. We found that CREB deletion in the ventral hippocampus (VH), a region known for regulation of mood and emotion, results in amelioration of …

Urban Greenway Vegetative Communities And Environmental Drivers In The Southeastern United States, Erika Y. Chin Jul 2019

Urban Greenway Vegetative Communities And Environmental Drivers In The Southeastern United States, Erika Y. Chin

Theses and Dissertations

Greenways serve as parks or non-motorized transportation routes for urban residents, but as greenspaces they also have the potential to enhance habitat quality and availability. This dissertation examined two aspects of urban greenways: the motivations for establishing greenways and the structure of vegetative communities found within them. Analysis of greenways plans revealed that the provision of natural resources and societal benefits are not promoted equally. In general, social and recreational functions are prioritized in greenway designs, while environmental benefits and services are expected to be inherently and equally possessed by all greenspaces and greenways. Consequently, specific conservation actions (e.g. habitat …

Application And Evaluation Of Full-Field Surrogate Models In Engineering Design Space Exploration, Christopher Murray Thelin Jul 2019

Application And Evaluation Of Full-Field Surrogate Models In Engineering Design Space Exploration, Christopher Murray Thelin

Theses and Dissertations

When designing an engineering part, better decisions are made by exploring the entire space of design variations. This design space exploration (DSE) may be accomplished manually or via optimization. In engineering, evaluating a design during DSE often consists of running expensive simulations, such as finite element analysis (FEA) in order to understand the structural response to design changes. The computational cost of these simulations can make thorough DSE infeasible, and only a relatively small subset of the designs are explored. Surrogate models have been used to make cheap predictions of certain simulation results. Commonly, these models only predict single values …

Visual Artifacts As A Mediating Factor In Collaborative Museum Design, Jacquelyn Claire Johnson Jul 2019

Visual Artifacts As A Mediating Factor In Collaborative Museum Design, Jacquelyn Claire Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

The process of museum exhibit design includes a variety of activities, including collaboration on teams, consulting learning theories, following process models, brainstorming, performing evaluations, and using visuals. Although some articles mention these topics, very few provide specific details about these practices. This dissertation, which includes three articles, explores how design and visual communication occur in exhibit design. The first article examines how exhibit design teams function. The second article describes how they use visual representations to engage team members in ideation and concept development as they planned for new exhibits. This is based on the assumption that designers need to …

Heterotrophic Protists As Useful Models For Studying Microbial Food Webs In A Model Soil Ecosystem And The Universality Of Complex Unicellular Life, Andrew Robert Thompson

Theses and Dissertations

Heterotrophic protists, consisting largely of the Cercozoa, Amoebozoa, Ciliophora, Discoba and some Stramenopiles, are a poorly characterized component of life on Earth. They play an important ecological role in soil communities and provide key insights into the nature of one of life’s most enigmatic evolutionary transitions: the development of the complex unicell. Soil ecosystems are crucial to the functioning of global biogeochemical cycles (e.g. carbon and nitrogen) but are at risk of drastic change from anthropogenic climate change. Heterotrophic protists are the primary regulators of bacterial diversity in soils and as such play integral roles in biogeochemical cycling, nutrient mobilization, …

Bottom-Up Controls (Micronutrients And N And P Species) Better Predict Cyanobacterial Abundances In Harmful Algal Blooms Than Top-Down Controls (Grazers), Scott Andrew Collins

Theses and Dissertations

The initiation, bloom, and bust of harmful Cyanobacteria and algae blooms (HAB) in lakes are controlled by top-down and bottom-up ecological controls. Excess phosphorous and nitrogen inputs from anthropogenic sources are primary to blame, but eukaryotic grazers may also promote or curb Cyanobacteria dominance. We tracked shifts in bacterial composition, lake chemistry, and eukaryotic grazing community weekly or bi-weekly through spring and summer and modeled the causes of specific Cyanobacterial species blooms and busts across three lakes in Utah, USA, with differing lake trophic states. Regardless of trophic status, all three lakes experienced blooms of varying composition and duration. Aphanizomenon …
