Early Retention In Rural Schools: Alternate Route Teachers' Perspectives, Autumn K. Jordon
Early Retention In Rural Schools: Alternate Route Teachers' Perspectives, Autumn K. Jordon
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to examine teachers' perspectives of the key factors contributing to the retention of rural teachers who entered teaching through an alternate route certification program in Mississippi. It was specifically the goal of this study to understand how alternatively certified teachers perceive their own characteristics (e.g., teacher preparation, personal experiences), school conditions (e.g., students, administration), and compensation (e.g., salary, benefits) to be related to their decision to remain in the profession. In this study, 9 rural alternate route teachers were interviewed from 8 schools in Mississippi. The research questions were: (1) How do rural …
Effect Of Occidiofungin On Morphogenic Transformation Of Candida Albicans, Rabina Kumpakha
Effect Of Occidiofungin On Morphogenic Transformation Of Candida Albicans, Rabina Kumpakha
Theses and Dissertations
Candida albicans is a polymorphic fungus that can grow as yeast (Y) and hypha (H). The Y-H morphological switching is controlled through the MAPK, Cek1p. With the prior work showing that occidiofungin prevents C. albicans from forming hypha when added at the time of Y-H switching, we aim to identify the impact of occidiofungin on signaling events associated with morphological switching specifically looking at Cek1 MAPK cascade. Results from this work have demonstrated that Cek1 MAPK is not required for occidiofungin bioactivity. Further, we report that morphologically switching cells are more sensitive to occidiofungin than their non-switching counterparts. Moreover, later …
Estimating Recreational Value Of Water Quality In Mississippi Lakes When Water Quality Data Are Scarce, Caroline Kelsoe
Estimating Recreational Value Of Water Quality In Mississippi Lakes When Water Quality Data Are Scarce, Caroline Kelsoe
Theses and Dissertations
In its 2012 National Lakes Assessment, the EPA determined that nutrients are the most widespread stressor of US Lakes, with one-third of US lakes containing excess nitrogen and/or phosphorus. In response, states are developing numeric nutrient criteria to regulate the allowable amount of nutrients in surface waterbodies. In this study, we estimate the recreational value of improved water quality as a result of reduced nutrients in Mississippi lakes using a travel cost model. A major challenge, however, is the lack of water quality data for many Mississippi lakes. We introduce a water quality prediction model to impute water quality measures …

An Examination Of Impaired Driving: The Integral Role Of Cognitive And Behavioral Predictors, Andrew Tatch
An Examination Of Impaired Driving: The Integral Role Of Cognitive And Behavioral Predictors, Andrew Tatch
Theses and Dissertations
Despite modest reductions over previous decades, improvements in impaired driving prevalence have stalled at problematic levels in recent years. Recent self-report data indicate that 20 percent of driving age individuals acknowledge operating a vehicle within two hours of alcohol consumption within the previous year and there are approximately 121 million episodes of impaired driving annually. Extant research has consistently identified specific subgroups, including men, young adults, and individuals with less education, as being high risk for driving under the influence. Additionally, researchers of impaired driving have discerned certain impaired driving-related attitudes and behaviors as important predictors of impaired driving. Despite …

Aziridinations In Aqueous Solutions Using Dna Templating; Towards Sustainable Asymmetric Catalysis, Sydnee Elmore
Theses and Dissertations
Modern organic synthesis typically centers around the use of expensive, complex, homogeneous catalyst systems in organic solvents which often generate copious amounts of hazardous waste. Therefore, the development of water-tolerant catalysts capable of performing reactions in aqueous solutions has become a growing area of scientific inquiry. To this end, we have designed and optimized a water-stable catalyst (Mn[TMPyP4]I5) capable of generating aziridines from olefins in aqueous solutions. Aziridines are valuable synthetic building blocks that have been used to generate various biologically active compounds, though synthetic techniques for aziridine synthesis are not well-established. Our ultimate goal was developing a catalytic system, …
Analysis Of Defense Signaling Pathway Genes Associated With Fungal Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus And Aflatoxin Accumulation In Corn, Felicia Marie Parish
Analysis Of Defense Signaling Pathway Genes Associated With Fungal Resistance To Aspergillus Flavus And Aflatoxin Accumulation In Corn, Felicia Marie Parish
Theses and Dissertations
Aspergillus flavus exemplifies a pathogenic fungus that remains a significant contributor to the loss of corn (Zea mays) crops. The production of carcinogenic aflatoxins renders the crop hazardous for consumption and causes significant loss to farmers. Therefore, the prevention of A. flavus contamination continues to persist as a topic for research intervention. Host resistance to this pathogen provides a promising source of defense for the corn plant. Corn inbred line Mp313E was previously identified to exhibit significant resistance against the A. flavus fungal infection and aflatoxin contamination. Quantitative trait loci (QTL) mapping has previously established four major QTL locations associated …

Improved Land Use And Land Cover Classification And Determination Of The Influence Of Land Use And Land Cover On The Water Quality In An Agriculture Dominated Watershed, Scott Landon Sanders
Theses and Dissertations
Classification of remotely sensed imagery for reliable land use and land cover (LULC) change information remains a challenge in areas where spectrally similar LULC features occur. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) influences the biogeochemistry of aquatic environments and its quantity and quality are due, in large part, to the surrounding LULC. Thus, objectives were to improve the accuracy of LULC classification and quantify seasonal variations of water quality in a watershed dominated by agriculture and determine the controls for the variations in water quality. Support vector machine classification scheme with post classification correction yielded highest accuracy for LULC classifications and four …

Identification Of Protein Biomarkers For Differentiating Listeria Monocytogenes Genetic Lineage Iii, Basant Gomaa
Identification Of Protein Biomarkers For Differentiating Listeria Monocytogenes Genetic Lineage Iii, Basant Gomaa
Theses and Dissertations
Listeriamonocytogenes causes listeriosis and is one of the most virulent foodborne pathogens. Different subtyping techniques classified L. monocytogenes into four genetic lineages(I, II,III and IV)and seventeen serotypes. Most outbreaks of listeriosis are caused by lineage I. Lineage II is mostly associated with sporadic listeriosis, while Lineage III strains are typically lower risk for causing listeriosis. Listeriosis mainly affectselderly, immunosuppressed, children, andpregnant women causing fetal death, miscarriage, meningitis, encephalitis, and septicemia. Therefore, it is important to differentiate high-risk strains from low-risk strains, which will permit early and appropriate interventions. Our main goal in this current work is to detect candidate biomarkers unique …

(Meso-Tetra(N-Methyl-4-Pyridyl)Porphyrin)Manganese(Iii) Iodide: A Water Stable Catalyst For The Aziridination Of Olefins, Daniel Karl Wolgemuth
Theses and Dissertations
Aziridines are important building blocks for the synthesis of a wide range of organic compounds, including biologically active compounds and pharmaceuticals. The development of more cost-effective catalysts for atom transfer reactions is a continuing area of research in chemistry. Transition metal complexes have been shown to catalyze the aziridination of olefins, however, most require expensive metal ions or complex ligands. Meso-tetra(N-methyl-4-pyridyl)porphyrin (TMPyP4) is a highly charged, planar ligand that has been used to support manganese(III) in complexes like Mn[TMPyP4]I5. Herein we report the optimization of the reaction conditions for the aziridination of olefins in water and buffered solutions catalyzed by …

Aplikimi I Sistemeve Te Informacionit E-Health Care Në Kosovë, Ardit Imeri
Theses and Dissertations
The Scientific Romances Of Jules Verne And H.G. Wells: Imperialism Disguised As Progress In The Early Days Of Science Fiction, Timothy Ferris
The Scientific Romances Of Jules Verne And H.G. Wells: Imperialism Disguised As Progress In The Early Days Of Science Fiction, Timothy Ferris
Theses and Dissertations
Frequently in their respective oeuvres, Verne and Wells write in a rhetoric of conquest that almost always translates to discovering a more efficient means of taming wild, non-European environments. These goals extend not only to the lands that their protagonists explore, but also to human beings and other life that may populate them. Indeed, the underlying focus—the one that is masked behind the thrill and adventure of both Wells and Verne—is none other than the march of progress as understood by middle-class Europeans in the latter half of the nineteenth century. Progress can produce positivistic optimism, and it can also …
"Queen Of Kings": Masculinity And Femininity In The Visual Rhetoric Of Cleopatra Vii And Augustan Distortions Thereof, Allen Alexander Kendall
"Queen Of Kings": Masculinity And Femininity In The Visual Rhetoric Of Cleopatra Vii And Augustan Distortions Thereof, Allen Alexander Kendall
Theses and Dissertations
To address every aspect in which Cleopatra VII asserted her right to rule and maintain the favor of her own subjects and of Rome would be far too large a task for anything less than a book-length treatment. Rather than attempt to address multiple issues, this thesis addresses just one aspect of Cleopatra's political strategy to visualize her legitimacy as ruler: namely a combination of masculine and feminine elements in her iconography. This thesis will then follow the same themes in elements of Cleopatra's visual rhetoric was seized upon by the poets of Augustan Rome, who used it to the …
The Prey Drive Model Of Sexual Violence, Tiffany Dawn Russell
The Prey Drive Model Of Sexual Violence, Tiffany Dawn Russell
Theses and Dissertations
The current project introduced prey drive theory, a new conceptualization of human violence perpetration adapted from canine training and breeding literature. As with canines, prey drive theory conceptualizes human aggression as a manifestation of genetically predisposed dominance and competitiveness. To evaluate the concept of human prey drive, the current study developed a prey drive model of sexual violence that was tested within a community sample of men (N = 662). Four latent trait clusters formed the foundation of the model: sexualized prey dominance, sexualized prey pursuit, antagonistic preparedness, and malevolent personality. A new scale, the Masculine Dominance Index, was …

Understanding The Molecular And Cellular Functions Of Odd-Skipped Related 1 In Outflow Tract Development, Menglan Xiang
Theses and Dissertations
The cardiac outflow tract (OFT) is a transient conduit that connects the embryonic heart chambers to the vascular network. Transcription factor Osr1 promotes the proliferation and cell cycle progression of second heart field (SHF), an essential cell population that contribute to the developing OFT. In this study, we investigated the role of Osr1 in OFT development on cellular and molecular levels using a systems biology approach. We observed OFT rotation and elongation defects, as well as double-outlet right ventricle and overriding aorta as a result of SHF-specific deletion of Osr1. Using genetic inducible fate mapping, we showed that Osr1-expressing SHF …

This work introduces a series of papers developed to explore the case for change in dental education. Three issues facing dental education are (a) the challenging financial environment of higher education, making dental schools very expensive and tuition-intensive for universities to operate and producing high debt levels for students, which limits access to education and restricts career choices; (b) the profession's apparent loss of vision for taking care of the oral health needs of all components of society and the resultant potential for marginalization of dentistry as a specialized health care service available only to the affluent; and (c) the …
“Don’T Say Gay. We Say Dumb Or Stupid”: Queering Prospectivemathematics Teachers’ Discussions, Amy Saunders Ross
“Don’T Say Gay. We Say Dumb Or Stupid”: Queering Prospectivemathematics Teachers’ Discussions, Amy Saunders Ross
Theses and Dissertations
Many prospective teachers make assumptions about their students before they actually begin teaching. Many of these assumptions can be rooted specifically in students’ races, cultures, classes, religions, genders, and sexual orientations. In order for prospective mathematics teachers to challenge these biases, some mathematics teacher educators have provided tasks to support these prospective teachers in becoming aware of their own biases. I chose to analyze a group of five prospective mathematics teachers discussing topics of teaching for social justice to examine more closely the kinds of biases they carry, and more specifically, how those biases came about in their conversations. My …
