Novel Techniques To Improve Restoration Of Native Rangeland Species, Rhett Michael Anderson Mar 2020

Novel Techniques To Improve Restoration Of Native Rangeland Species, Rhett Michael Anderson

Theses and Dissertations

The sagebrush steppe is a particularly sensitive ecosystem that is easily disturbed by fires, oil and gas extraction, woody-plant encroachment, and overgrazing. The natural regeneration of native species following a disturbance within this system is typically slow and sporadic, which allows invasive grasses to occupy the landscape. Attempts to assist the recovery of these landscapes through direct seeding is commonly met with poor success rates, particularly in lower elevation, drier sites. Novel seed enhancement technologies and planting techniques that mitigate limiting factors impairing restoration efforts may improve the likelihood of restoring these degraded areas. For chapter 1, we evaluated a …

Wildfire In The West: How Megafires And Storm Events Affect Stream Chemistry And Nutrient Dynamics In Semi-Arid Watersheds, Trevor William Crandall Mar 2020

Wildfire In The West: How Megafires And Storm Events Affect Stream Chemistry And Nutrient Dynamics In Semi-Arid Watersheds, Trevor William Crandall

Theses and Dissertations

Climate change is causing larger wildfires and more extreme precipitation events throughout the world. As these ecological disturbances increasingly coincide, they are altering lateral fluxes of sediment, organic matter, and nutrients. Increased lateral flux of nutrients could exacerbate eutrophication and associated harmful algal blooms, and increased sediment and organic matter flux could degrade the water supply. Here, we report the immediate stream chemistry response of watersheds in central Utah (USA) that were affected by a megafire followed by an extreme precipitation event in 2018. The wildfires burned throughout the summer of 2018 until the remnants of Hurricane Rosa released torrential …

Diagnosis And The Role Of Chemokine Receptors In Alzheimer's Disease, Josue David Gonzalez Murcia Mar 2020

Diagnosis And The Role Of Chemokine Receptors In Alzheimer's Disease, Josue David Gonzalez Murcia

Theses and Dissertations

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is the most common neurodegenerative disorder and is the main cause of dementia in the elderly population. AD is pathologically characterized by the accumulation of amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles that results in neurodegeneration and loss of memory function. However, diagnosis of AD and characterization of biological mechanisms that lead to pathology and modulate risk for disease has proven to be extremely difficult. Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) contains critical biomarkers for AD such as levels of amyloid beta (Aβ) phosphorylated-tau (p-tau), total-tau (t-tau), and neurofilament light chain (NfL). The CSF levels of these biomarkers are useful in determining …

RAGE activation has also been identified in other disease states including diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, osteoarthritis, and cancers. We examined the …

Object Detection With Deep Learning To Accelerate Pose Estimation For Automated Aerial Refueling, Andrew T. Lee Mar 2020

Object Detection With Deep Learning To Accelerate Pose Estimation For Automated Aerial Refueling, Andrew T. Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Remotely piloted aircraft (RPAs) cannot currently refuel during flight because the latency between the pilot and the aircraft is too great to safely perform aerial refueling maneuvers. However, an AAR system removes this limitation by allowing the tanker to directly control the RP A. The tanker quickly finding the relative position and orientation (pose) of the approaching aircraft is the first step to create an AAR system. Previous work at AFIT demonstrates that stereo camera systems provide robust pose estimation capability. This thesis first extends that work by examining the effects of the cameras' resolution on the quality of pose …

Immobilization Of Copper Nanoparticles Onto Various Supports Applications In Catalysis, Anh Hoang Tu Nguyen Sorenson Mar 2020

Immobilization Of Copper Nanoparticles Onto Various Supports Applications In Catalysis, Anh Hoang Tu Nguyen Sorenson

Theses and Dissertations

Copper-based materials are one of the most promising catalysts for performing transformations of important organic compounds in both academic and industrial operations. However, it is challenging to consistently synthesize highly active and stable copper species as heterogeneous catalysts due to their relatively high surface energy. As a result, agglomeration usually occurs, which limits the catalytic activities of the copper species. The work presented in this dissertation shows different synthetic strategies for obtaining active and stable copper-based materials by modifying chemical/physical properties of copper nanoparticles (NPs). Emphasis is placed on discussing specific catalytic systems, including carbon-supported catalysts (monometallic and bimetallic copper-based …

A Comparative Evaluation Of The Detection And Tracking Capability Between Novel Event-Based And Conventional Frame-Based Sensors, James P. Boettiger

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional frame-based technology continues to suffer from motion blur, low dynamic range, speed limitations and high data storage requirements. Event-based sensors offer a potential solution to these challenges. This research centers around a comparative assessment of frame and event-based object detection and tracking. A basic frame-based algorithm is used to compare against two different event-based algorithms. First event-based pseudo-frames were parsed through standard frame-based algorithms and secondly, target tracks were constructed directly from filtered events. The findings show there is significant value in pursuing the technology further.

Advances In The Systematics And Evolutionary Understanding Of Fireflies (Coleoptera: Lampyridae), Gavin Jon Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Fireflies are a cosmopolitan group of bioluminescent beetles classified in the family Lampyridae. The first catalogue of Lampyridae was published in 1907 and since that time, the classification and systematics of fireflies have been in flux. Several more recent catalogues and classification schemes have been published, but rarely have they taken phylogenetic history into account. Here I infer the first large scale anchored hybrid enrichment phylogeny for the fireflies and use this phylogeny as a backbone to inform classification. Several classification changes are made throughout the group with emphasis on morphological traits that support the AHE hypothesis. Building off of …

Reconsidering Undergraduate Anatomy And Physiology Curriculum, Eric Michael Walsh

Theses and Dissertations

In the past 50 years several convergent factors have spurred unprecedented change in anatomy and physiology (A&P) instruction. An explosion of biomedical knowledge, an increased demand for students well-versed in A&P, and decreased resources for the course has provoked a vast array of research. However, most studies employ one of three strategies to enact change: testing the effectiveness of new pedagogies, exploring the utility of new technologies, or documenting learning in new contexts. By comparison, a much smaller body of research focuses on changing the A&P curriculum to improve student learning. To address this gap, the musculoskeletal curriculum for an …
