Puruhá Fashion As Aesthetic Sovereignty: Identity Making And Indigenous Dress In Ecuador, Anaïs M. Parada Apr 2020

Puruhá Fashion As Aesthetic Sovereignty: Identity Making And Indigenous Dress In Ecuador, Anaïs M. Parada

Theses and Dissertations

Puruhá fashion designers, vendors, and sellers have used their cultural heritage to create an emerging dress market that is both locally productive and nationally disruptive. These entrepreneurs have combined traditional dress with contemporary elements to create a new style that is distinctly recognizable as Puruhá, and thus acts as both a cultural and an individual brand. In a nation-state that offers its Indigenous people tokenism and concessions that don’t otherwise challenge the status of existing governmental and legal systems, having control over one’s own narrative through branding is a revolutionary act. In fact, the fight for economic autonomy against state …

Currently used oil removal methods, in addition to their advantages, also have severe limitations. New techniques have been developed including nanotechnology to address these limitations. A new type of nanoparticle (NP), composed of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) coated iron oxide (magnetite), has been successfully used to …

The Utility Of Using Virtue Locales To Explain Criminogenic Environments, Hunter Max Boehme Apr 2020

The Utility Of Using Virtue Locales To Explain Criminogenic Environments, Hunter Max Boehme

Theses and Dissertations

Place-based criminology has a long history of examining the potential causes and correlates of criminogenic environments. This line of scholarship has been able to establish that crime, levels of social guardianship, and racial/ethnic groups are unevenly distributed throughout space. Routine activity theory and environmental criminology are two prominent explanations of the causes of criminogenic environments. Specifically, the crime generator and crime attractor scholarship (Brantingham & Brantingham, 1995) has found recent success uncovering which certain land uses that may be “risky facilities” (e.g., pawn shops, payday lenders, bars). However, these paradigms have yet to discover which businesses are crime-reducing and an …

New Approaches To Understanding Mjo Dynamics, Casey Shoup Apr 2020

New Approaches To Understanding Mjo Dynamics, Casey Shoup

Theses and Dissertations

The Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO) is a highly air-sea coupled phenomenon and is the dominant mode of intraseasonal variability in the tropics. It is easily discernible in satellite-derived sea surface salinity (SSS), which varies as a direct result of MJO precipitation from the convectively active to suppressed phases. Negative (positive) SSS anomalies are associated with the active (suppressed) phase of the MJO. We find that all three available satellite salinity missions (ESA’s Soil Moisture Ocean Salinity (SMOS); NASA’s Aquarius/SAC-D, and NASA’s Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP)) are capable of capturing the MJO SSS signal and that the near-equatorial SSS response is …

Dysregulation Of The Integrated Stress Response In Early Onset Dystonia (Dyt16) Due To Mutations In Pact, Samuel B. Burnett Apr 2020

Dysregulation Of The Integrated Stress Response In Early Onset Dystonia (Dyt16) Due To Mutations In Pact, Samuel B. Burnett

Theses and Dissertations

Early onset primary dystonia 16 (DYT16) is a subtype of the neuromuscular movement disorder, dystonia. The resultant phenotypes of DYT16 consist of both agonist and antagonist muscles firing simultaneously, compromised posture and gait, as well as chronic repetitive movements. DYT16 has been shown to result from mutations in the protein activator of PKR, PACT. Under conditions of viral infection, ER stress, oxidative stress, and serum starvation, PKR phosphorylates eIF2α resulting in the attenuation of general protein synthesis. Transient eIF2α phosphorylation is favorable for cell survival, however, when prolonged leads to apoptosis. In the absence of stress, both PACT and PKR …

Chemistry Of A Biscarborane Dithiol And Its Nickel (Ii) Complex, Tyler Hemingway Apr 2020

Chemistry Of A Biscarborane Dithiol And Its Nickel (Ii) Complex, Tyler Hemingway

Theses and Dissertations

Neutral biscarborane dithiol and its anionic dithiolate form were successfully synthesized and structurally characterized. The C–C intracluster bond lengths were found to be responsive to the electron density on the cluster. Introduction of two thiol groups on biscarborane led to the significant increase of intracluster C–C bond lengths compared to those of unsubstituted biscarborane. Furthermore, the anionic dithiolate form had even longer C–C cluster bonds. This comparison shows electronic effect of substituents attached to carbon atoms of biscarborane on the strength of its C–C bonds. Additionally, a novel Ni complex was obtained using this dithiolate as a ligand. This complex …

Roads and Industrial noise barriers are used inside industrial facilities alongside the walls, around construction pillars, nearby machinery and other equipment to separate quite work zones, protect walls, deliver extra safety and precautions while diminish sound and vibrational pressure. We hypothesized …

Theraputic Strategies For Altering The Trajectory Of Neurocognitive Impairments In Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders In The Post-Cart Era, Kristen Addie Mclaurin Apr 2020

Theraputic Strategies For Altering The Trajectory Of Neurocognitive Impairments In Hiv-1 Associated Neurocognitive Disorders In The Post-Cart Era, Kristen Addie Mclaurin

Theses and Dissertations

The marked increase in life expectancy for individuals with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1), following the great success of combination antiretroviral therapy (cART), necessitates an investigation of the progression of HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), and associated neural mechanisms, across the functional lifespan. Furthermore, given the persistence of HAND in the post-cART era, there remains a critical need to develop adjunctive therapeutics targeting the neural mechanisms underlying HAND. Thus, the guiding hypothesis for the present study was threefold. First, that there will be a differential progression of NCI in HIV-1 Tg and control animals. Second, that synaptodendritic dysfunction will …

Nitric Oxide Expression With Age And Diet In The Arterial Wall Of Apoe Knockout Mice, Kara Cooper Apr 2020

Nitric Oxide Expression With Age And Diet In The Arterial Wall Of Apoe Knockout Mice, Kara Cooper

Theses and Dissertations

Background: Hypertension is a dangerous condition that precedes many cardiovascular events including myocardial infarction, stroke, transient cerebral ischemic attack and symptomatic aortoiliac occlusive disease. While it is universally accepted that arteries stiffen with age, the physiological reason for this is debated. In a previous study, by Dr. Shana Roach Watson it was shown that collagen fibers re-orient themselves in a circumferential direction, resulting in increased arterial stiffness. The study hypothesized that this collagen remodeling could be a result of decreased nitric oxide production.

Methods: This study measured nitric oxide in two different ways, indirectly via Immunoperoxidase staining for eNOS and …

Flexible Regression Models For Survival Data, Ennan Gu Apr 2020

Flexible Regression Models For Survival Data, Ennan Gu

Theses and Dissertations

Survival analysis is a branch of statistics to analyze the time-to-event data or survival data. One important feature of survival data is censoring, which means that not all the subjects’ survival time are observed directly. Among all the survival data, right-censored data are the most common type and consist of some exactly observed survival times and some right-censored observations. In this dissertation, we focus on studying flexible regression models for complicated right-censored survival data when the classical proportional hazards (PH) assumption is not satisfied. Flexible semiparametric regression models can largely avoid misspecification of parametric distributions and thus provide more modeling …

Does Our Relationship With Nature Influence Our Argumentation Skills About Biodiversity Conservation?, Iresha Nadeeshani Jayasinghe Mar 2020

Does Our Relationship With Nature Influence Our Argumentation Skills About Biodiversity Conservation?, Iresha Nadeeshani Jayasinghe

Theses and Dissertations

Understanding human treatment towards nature provides insight into mitigating human induced environmental issues. This study determines whether individuals’ relationships with nature (NR), emotions experienced during evidence evaluation, and conservation concern drive evaluation of arguments made about biodiversity conservation. Although we predicted that participants with strong NR would exhibit motivated reasoning, resulting in strong argument-evaluation skills as they evaluate an anti-conservation argument, we found that participants’ emotions during evidence evaluation were more predictive of their argument-evaluation skills. Further, participants with either low or high conservation concern demonstrated better argumentation skills. These findings suggest that while fostering strong relationships with nature may …

The Role Of Floating Gardens To Alter The Water Quality Of The Chicago River: Chicago, Il, Emmett Andrew Spooner Mar 2020

The Role Of Floating Gardens To Alter The Water Quality Of The Chicago River: Chicago, Il, Emmett Andrew Spooner

Theses and Dissertations

The pollution of heavy metals within surface water is a rising global concern. As heavy metals are transported through rivers, they can bioaccumulate through the food web, leading to harmful concentrations within waterways. In urban areas such as the city of Chicago, Illinois, the use of road salts is a concern as elevated concentrations of chloride (Cl–) can reduce surface water quality. Since surface waters can carry heavy metals and Cl– salts over a large distance, methods of in-situ phytoremediation are of growing importance. Through a pilot project, a floating garden system has been installed along a portion of the …

Using Herbicide And Planting Techniques To Restore A Native Bunchgrass To Cheatgrass Invaded Systems, Tyson Jeffrey Terry

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores potential seeding techiniques to limit harmful effects of preemergent herbicide on a seeded species while simultaneously reducing abudance of annual invasive grasses. The first chapter examines the use of activated carbon seed coatings and furrows to limit herbicide effect on seeds of a perrenial bunchgrass. We found that both carbon coatings and furrows mitigated some of the herbicide effects, but that only when the two techniques were combined did we observe unaffected seedling emergence, plant density, and aboveground growth. Therefore, we suggest to management that use of carbon coatings and furrows after herbicide application can likely be …
