Determination Of The Summer Origins Of American Kestrels ( Falco Sparverius ) Wintering In Northern And Central Illinois, Taylor P. Joray
Determination Of The Summer Origins Of American Kestrels ( Falco Sparverius ) Wintering In Northern And Central Illinois, Taylor P. Joray
Theses and Dissertations
The seasonal and interannual movements of the American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) are not fully understood. Although one of the most widespread and abundant raptors found in North America, information on where many populations summer and overwinter is lacking. We used stable hydrogen isotope values obtained from feathers (δ2Hf) of known origin to create age-specific calibration functions for juvenile and adult American Kestrels. We then used these calibration functions to determine the most likely summer origins of the American Kestrels that wintered in northern and central Illinois during 2015-16, classified these individuals as year-round residents or wintering migrants, and validated these …

Collaboration In The Technical Communication Classroom: Negotiating Team Contracts In A Pwi, Alyssa Herman
Collaboration In The Technical Communication Classroom: Negotiating Team Contracts In A Pwi, Alyssa Herman
Theses and Dissertations
As TPC teacher-scholars, we must acknowledge the overwhelming Whiteness of our field and the racism, ableism, and sexism inherent in our institutions. We must actively work toward inclusivity and socially just collaborations in our classrooms by encouraging dominant-identified students to confront their privileges and implicit biases in order to better engage with historically marginalized students. With that said, this thesis examines how teacher-scholars might take up a cultural-rhetorical approach to teaching TPC and how we might negotiate team contracts in PWIs. Firmly situated within the social justice turn, Herman draws from both feminist disability theory and critical race theory to …
Dissecting Dystrophin's Roles, Subcellular Organization, And Functional Network In Drosophila Oogenesis, Mina Amini Moghaddam
Dissecting Dystrophin's Roles, Subcellular Organization, And Functional Network In Drosophila Oogenesis, Mina Amini Moghaddam
Theses and Dissertations
Mutations in the giant actin-membrane linker protein Dystrophin (Dys) are the cause of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). In the Drosophila model system, the highly conserved Dys protein is not required for viability but is required for proper wing and ovarian development. Dys mutations produce two visible phenotypes: posterior crossveins are detached from the longitudinal veins, and in oogenesis the developing eggs fail to elongate properly. This provides an opportunity to explore the less-understood cellular and developmental roles of Dys and gain a new insight into how tissues adopt their correct shapes.
Animals from worms to flies to humans express multiple …
A Study Of Covid-19 Mortality Under Varying Patient Frailty, Alison N. Sifuentes
A Study Of Covid-19 Mortality Under Varying Patient Frailty, Alison N. Sifuentes
Theses and Dissertations
Modeled the spread and mortality of COVID-19 throughout the city of Chicago. By incorporating group frailty into a classic SEIR infectious disease model, we were able to differentiate the population of Chicago by their response to COVID-19. Three age groups with different COVID-19-induced death rates were examined, and the model sought to showcase the multiplicative deviation of each age group death rate from the average disease-induced death rate. This adjustment for different death rates among age groups accounted for heterogeneity within the population, and sought to introduce a more accurate manner for modeling the spread of infectious diseases.
An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Faye Liesman
An Investigation Of Gene Regulatory Network State Space Variability, Sara Faye Liesman
Theses and Dissertations
Genes are segments of DNA that provide a blueprint for cells and organisms to effectively control processes and regulations within individuals. There have been many attempts to quantify these processes, as a greater understanding of how genes operate could have large impacts on both personalized and precision medicine. Gene interactions are of particular interest, however, current biological methods can not easily reveal the details of these interactions. Therefore, we infer networks of interactions from gene expression data which we call a gene regulatory network, or GRN. Due to the robust behavior of genes and the inherent variability within interactions, models …

By Your Powers Combined: Heroic Solutions To Climate Catastrophes In The Fifth Season, Avengers: Infinity War, And Horizon: Zero Daw N, Kematat Matthew Medrala
Theses and Dissertations
Popular entertainment has become concerned with addressing issues of climate catastrophe in order to reflect the real concerns of its audience. Because these media narratives are produced by wealthy institutions that reach millions of people, it is vital to understand what these stories say about the causes of existential crises and their presented solutions. This thesis applies an ecocritical approach informed by environmental justice theorists and Marxist theory in order to analyze what a contemporary popular film, videogame, and novel have to say about addressing an oncoming ecological crisis. This analysis reveals that mass death among the disempowered is considered …
Investigating The Regulation And Role Of P38 Mapk In Collagen-Related Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, Briseida Oceguera-Perez
Investigating The Regulation And Role Of P38 Mapk In Collagen-Related Limb Girdle Muscular Dystrophy, Briseida Oceguera-Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Aging is an expected and normal process across living organisms. It is characterized as a loss of stress resistance, degeneration of tissues, and decline in motor function that happen gradually across lifespan. Susceptibility to neurodegenerative and dystrophic conditions also increase, and unlike aging, are not a normal aspect of lifespan. Discerning the difference between normal and aberrant aging states will give insight into the mechanisms behind the progressive dysfunction shared among organisms. Previous work in our lab has shown that the aging gene p38 MAPK in Drosophila melanogaster plays a significant role in the aging process through its downstream effects …
Guar Gum Based Hydrogel Matrices As Low-Cost Biomaterials For Bone Tissue Engineering, Anil Parameswaran Thankam
Guar Gum Based Hydrogel Matrices As Low-Cost Biomaterials For Bone Tissue Engineering, Anil Parameswaran Thankam
Theses and Dissertations
Hydrogels have existed for more than half a century, and today they have many applications including tissue engineering. We have synthesized hydrogel scaffolds based on low cost and biodegradable polymer like hydroxypropyl guar (HPG) and applying them for bone tissue engineering. We have fabricated hydrogel matrices without any toxic chemical crosslinker to avoid possible toxicity in fabrication. We followed two methods of fabrication for HPG based hydrogels. One is via physical crosslinking, by simply mixing poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) with HPG and the other one is grafting poly(vinyl caprolactam) (PNVCL) on HPG via radical polymerization. For the first method, we developed …

The Influence Of Instructor Mental Illness Disclosure On The Perceptions Of Mental Illness, Classroom Climate, Teacher Credibility, Homophily, And Social Attraction, Kirsten L. Bridgemen
Theses and Dissertations
This study uses the lens of Communication Privacy Management theory to analyze the impact an instructor’s depth of disclosure of their mental illness can have on mental illness stigmatization, classroom climate, as well as teacher credibility, homophily, and social attraction. Participants responded to a series of quantitative-based questions regarding a hypothetical syllabus with varied levels of a teacher disclosing their mental illness. Results indicated that none of the investigated dependent variables were negatively affected by the hypothetical instructor’s disclosure, and mental illness stigmatization was lessened. Implications, limitations, and areas for future research are discussed.

Theses and Dissertations
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 18.2 million adults age 20 and older have Coronary Artery Disease in the United States. Early diagnosis is therefore of crucial importance to help prevent debilitating consequences, and principally death for many patients. In this study we use data containing gene expression values from peripheral blood samples in 198 non-diabetic patients, with the goal of developing an age and sex gene expression model for diagnosis of Coronary Artery Disease. We employ machine learning methods to obtain a classification based on genetic information, age and sex. Our implementation uses feed forward …
Social Withdrawal Associated With Regret And Fulfillment In Three Long-Term Care Facilities, Melanie Mei Yukie Serrao
Social Withdrawal Associated With Regret And Fulfillment In Three Long-Term Care Facilities, Melanie Mei Yukie Serrao
Theses and Dissertations
The study of social withdrawal continues to grow among younger samples, including childhood, adolescence, and emerging adulthood. Little research has addressed socially withdrawn older adults, despite the various losses, declines, and changes experienced by those in later life and their known benefits resulting from social interactions. Shy, avoidant, or unsocial individuals at younger ages may withdraw and possibly miss out on important opportunities; as a result, when they are grown, these same socially withdrawn individuals may experience greater regret and lower fulfillment in later life. Further, socially withdrawn older adults residing in long-term care (LTC) facilities may have more time …
Disinfection Byproduct Drivers Of Cytotoxicity In Drinking Water And Swimming Pools, Joshua M. Allen
Disinfection Byproduct Drivers Of Cytotoxicity In Drinking Water And Swimming Pools, Joshua M. Allen
Theses and Dissertations
Water disinfection was cited as the greatest public health achievement of the 20th Century. By inactivating pathogens, disinfection has significantly reduced waterborne diseases in drinking water and swimming pools. However, chemical disinfection has also raised a public health issue: the potential for cancer induction, reproductive and developmental effects, and asthma-related risks associated with exposure to chemical disinfection byproducts (DBPs), which are formed by the reaction of disinfectants with organic matter (natural or anthropogenic), bromide, and iodide. In the U.S., four trihalomethanes (THMs) and five haloacetic acids (HAAs) are currently regulated in drinking water, although no DBPs are regulated in pools, …
Characterization And Analysis Of The Avian Epidermal Differentiation Complex And Implications In Feather Evolution, Anthony Chastine Davis
Characterization And Analysis Of The Avian Epidermal Differentiation Complex And Implications In Feather Evolution, Anthony Chastine Davis
Theses and Dissertations
Since the most recent major mass-extinction event ~65 million years ago, birds have expanded to now occupy a wide range of habitats and exhibit diverse lifestyles. A major reason for this evolutionary success is the mechanical resilience and diversity of their epidermal appendages such as feathers, scales, and beaks. The diversity of these appendages, specifically feathers has played a critical role in their evolutionary success. The feathers of birds vary substantially across different species, as well as at different life stages and anatomical locations on an individual bird. Several of the genetic elements involved in the development and structure of …
Remediation Of Desiccation Cracking In Clayey Soils Through Bio-Cementation And Bottom Ash, Mark Vail
Remediation Of Desiccation Cracking In Clayey Soils Through Bio-Cementation And Bottom Ash, Mark Vail
Theses and Dissertations
Desiccation cracking considerably impairs the hydraulic and mechanical properties of clayey soils and is critical to the long-term performance of infrastructure foundations and earth structures. Classical crack remediation methods are associated with high labor and maintenance costs or the usage of environment-unfriendly chemicals. Recycling waste materials and developing bio-mediated techniques have emerged as green and sustainable soil stabilization solutions. The objective of this study is to investigate the feasibility of soil crack remediation through the usage of microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) and bottom ash admixtures. We carry out monotonic drying and cyclic drying-wetting tests to characterize the effects of bottom …

Validation Of The Assessment Of Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge As A Self-Assessment With K-12 Teachers In A Title 1 School District, Jami Michel Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Teacher quality has become a topic of national discussion due to the United States’ lagging behind other countries’ success on both international and national assessments. Validation of the Assessment of Teachers’ Pedagogical Content Knowledge (ATPCK) as a self-assessment with K-12 teachers in a Title 1 school district is the purpose of this research. Assessing teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) growth as a result of professional development is a challenge. Utilizing confirmatory factor analysis allowed the researcher to determine the validity and reliability of the ATPCK as a self-assessment measure of teachers’ PCK. The research results will be utilized to support …
The Behavioral And Neural Effects Of Audiovisual Affective Processing, Chuanji Gao
The Behavioral And Neural Effects Of Audiovisual Affective Processing, Chuanji Gao
Theses and Dissertations
In everyday life, we receive affective information from a multisensory environment. What we see and what we hear jointly influence how we feel, think and act. Outstanding questions still remain about the essential behavioral and neural mechanism underlying how we combine visual and auditory affective signals. In this dissertation, I report a series of behavioral, EEG and fMRI experiments addressing this question. I found behaviorally there are congruency, visual dominance, and negativity dominance effects. Using ERPs, I showed that these behavioral effects can map onto different time course in audiovisual affective processing. Time-frequency analyses of EEG data showed that there …

Algorithmic Robot Design: Label Maps, Procrustean Graphs, And The Boundary Of Non-Destructiveness, Shervin Ghasemlou
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation is focused on the problem of algorithmic robot design. The process of designing a robot or a team of robots that can reliably accomplish a task in an environment requires several key elements. How the problem is formulated can play a big role in the design process. The ability of the model to correctly reflect the environment, the events, and different pieces of the problem is crucial. Another key element is the ability of the model to show the relationship between different designs of a single system. These two elements can enable design algorithms to navigate through the …
Simulated Experince Evaluation In Developing Multi-Agent Coordination Graphs, Andrew J. Watson
Simulated Experince Evaluation In Developing Multi-Agent Coordination Graphs, Andrew J. Watson
Theses and Dissertations
Cognitive science has proposed that a way people learn is through self-critiquing by generating 'what-if' strategies for events (simulation). It is theorized that people use this method to learn something new as well as to learn more quickly. This research adds this concept to a graph-based genetic program. Memories are recorded during fitness assessment and retained in a global memory bank based on the magnitude of change in the agent’s energy and age of the memory. Between generations, candidate agents perform in simulations of the stored memories. Candidates that perform similarly to good memories and differently from bad memories are …

Does Marriage, Employment And Having Children Matter? A Secondary Analysis On Physical Activity Levels, Leisure Time Physical Activity, And Social Roles Among Women In The United States, Tramaine Paul Mcmullen
Theses and Dissertations
Background: Social roles, such as being married, employed, or having children, have been shown to have independent negative relationships with moderate to vigorous physical activity (MVPA) levels among women. Increasing the number of women with children that meets physical activity guidelines is critical to reduce chronic disease and early mortality in this population. However, few studies have examined the relationship between holding multiple social roles, MVPA, and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) among women with children. The study had two aims: 1) to determine the relationship between objectively measured MVPA by social roles and 2) to examine the frequency of specific …

The Influence Of Human Disturbance On Wildlife Use Of A Highway In South Texas, Thomas J. Yamashita
The Influence Of Human Disturbance On Wildlife Use Of A Highway In South Texas, Thomas J. Yamashita
Theses and Dissertations
Roads can greatly impact wildlife. Wildlife vehicle collisions contribute to population declines while disturbance from human activity may prevent wildlife from using areas around roads. The construction of mitigation structures may lessen these effects through fine scale modification of animal use of roadside areas. In this thesis, how the construction of wildlife mitigation structures impacted the fine scale distribution of wildlife on State Highway 100 in Cameron County, Texas was examined. Spatial and temporal scale may also influence these relationships. The relationship between human activity and wildlife activity around the highway was explored and how the distribution of wildlife road …
Proteomics Of The Egg Cell Membrane Of The Sea Star Patiria Miniata, Emily Wiseman
Proteomics Of The Egg Cell Membrane Of The Sea Star Patiria Miniata, Emily Wiseman
Theses and Dissertations
The conception of life, the creation of a genetically distinct being, is an event that has fascinated humanity for ages. It was only recently, at the turn of the 20th century, that the field of reproduction research reached an age of molecular mechanics, and with that, an onslaught of difficulties were encountered. The egg is a unique cell type because it contains a number of mRNA transcripts that do not express proteins necessary for the initial moments of gamete interaction or egg activation. Instead, these RNAs are stored in the egg for expression during early embryonic development. Coupled with the …

Vertical Transmission And Venereal Transmission Of Zika Virus In A Population Of South Texas Aedes Aegypti, Jeremy Marshall
Vertical Transmission And Venereal Transmission Of Zika Virus In A Population Of South Texas Aedes Aegypti, Jeremy Marshall
Theses and Dissertations
Zika virus has become a greater global public health concern from the occurrence of outbreaks in 2007 and its expansion to the Americas in 2015. The presence of Aedes aegypti in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and evidence of local transmission of Zika in Brownsville, Texas provides a need to research transmission dynamics of local populations. In these experiments, a locally acquired, laboratory colony of Aedes aegypti mosquitoes were infected with a blood meal featuring a Mexican isolate of Zika virus to display vector competency, vertical transmission, venereal transmission. Here, we infected 39 females, with 34 of them displaying evidence …
Analysis Of The Facilitative Interaction Between Batis Maritima And Avicennia Germinans As A Mangrove Restoration Strategy, Javier R. Navarro
Analysis Of The Facilitative Interaction Between Batis Maritima And Avicennia Germinans As A Mangrove Restoration Strategy, Javier R. Navarro
Theses and Dissertations
The multiple experiments conducted in an Avicennia germinans forest in Laguna Vista, TX was focused on determining if facilitation theory could explain the behavior observed between the herbaceous halophyte Batis maritima and A. germinans. I hypnotized that a positive interaction exists but through which mechanisms of facilitation I did not know. The overarching theme of the study is the presence or absence of B. maritima. Facilitation theory tells us that positive interactions are most often found under stressful conditions such as those on the coastal tidal flat of the Laguna Madre. Locally B. maritima has been found to …
Using Artificial Neural Networks To Detect Astronomical Transients, Katarzyna Wardęga
Using Artificial Neural Networks To Detect Astronomical Transients, Katarzyna Wardęga
Theses and Dissertations
A kilonova is an r-process-powered thermal transient created in the aftermath of a binary neutron star or black hole-neutron star merger. During these merger events, gravitational waves act as alert signals for telescopes to respond and search for potential optical counterparts. The localization probability regions for gravitational waves on the sky can be large. Additionally, kilonovae are rapidly-fading transients, making it crucial to develop an efficient method to detect them in image data. The standard method to detect transients is to subtract an image containing the plausible transient from a reference image of the same region taken at a different …
Insect Mediated Species Interactions: Examining Methods To Improve Artificial Buzz Pollination And Testing The Effects Of Plant Based Bioactive Compounds On Herbivore Life-History Traits, Mandeep Tayal
Theses and Dissertations
Pollination and herbivory are two major interactions in insect-plant ecology. Specialized pollination systems such as buzz pollination where pollen grains have to be extracted by bees with special thoracic vibrations and indirect flight muscles, is observed in ~6% of all flowering plants. Breeding and research programs in these species demand artificial pollination, but natural buzz pollinators are unreliable for this purpose. To find an alternative, we tested the pollen extraction efficiency of using inexpensive electric toothbrush over tuning fork (another commonly used device) in two buzz-pollinated species (Tomato and Silverleaf nightshade) at different buzzing frequencies and multiple buzzing time intervals. …
Teacher Beliefs In Sex-Specific Neuromyths And Gender-Specific Instructional Strategies: Prevalence, Predictors, And Implications, Marriah Schwallier
Teacher Beliefs In Sex-Specific Neuromyths And Gender-Specific Instructional Strategies: Prevalence, Predictors, And Implications, Marriah Schwallier
Theses and Dissertations
Neuromyths are misconceptions or overgeneralizations about brain research and its relevance to education. A number of recent studies have demonstrated that teachers endorse neuromyths at high rates, but none have examined neuromyths related to sex-specific learning differences. This study is the first to create and utilize a neuromyth inventory designed to measure misconceptions about sex learning differences. The overarching goal of the study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of both sex-specific neuromyths and gender-specific instructional strategies. The study was conducted in three large South Carolina school districts that offered single-gender classes at some point between 2007–2016. An electronic …
Aesthetic Activisms: Language Politics And Inheritances In Recent Poetry From The U.S. South, Sunshine Dempsey
Aesthetic Activisms: Language Politics And Inheritances In Recent Poetry From The U.S. South, Sunshine Dempsey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation, Aesthetic Activisms: Language Politics and Inheritances in Recent Poetry from the U.S. South, is to illustrate how four contemporary poets incorporate and adapt literary forms and linguistic structures to emphasize the exclusionary systems of language that undergird accepted southern cultural practices. Aesthetic Activismslooks at four poets, Natasha Trethewey, Fred Moten, Allison Adelle Hedge Coke, and C.D. Wright, who challenge concepts of regional literary inheritances that refuses to recognize a broad plurality of voices and histories.
Aesthetic Activisms focuses on poets whose work re-orients, or centralizes, marginalized experience through form and content, resisting essentialist …
