Acoustic Analysis Of Saproxylic Arthropod Diversity In North And Central American Pine Forests, Kristy Marie Mcandrew
Acoustic Analysis Of Saproxylic Arthropod Diversity In North And Central American Pine Forests, Kristy Marie Mcandrew
Theses and Dissertations
Biodiversity of arthropods living in dead wood is often understudied despite their potential effects on ecological processes such as wood decomposition and nutrient cycling. More time-efficient and less destructive methods are needed to study these saproxylic organisms to fully understand their global diversity. Because ecoacoustic methods have never been applied to saproxylic communities before, field and analytical methods such as waveguides, and soundproofing were developed, tested, and optimized. After developed methods were implemented in the field, Pearson's correlation tests were conducted to compare ecoacoustic index performance to traditional biodiversity indices. We found five significant correlations, all of which occurred at …
Interactions Between Aedes Albopictus (Skuse 1894) And Mycobacterium Ulcerans, Jillian Masters
Interactions Between Aedes Albopictus (Skuse 1894) And Mycobacterium Ulcerans, Jillian Masters
Theses and Dissertations
Mycobacterium ulcerans is an acid-fast bacillus that is the causative agent of Buruli ulcer, a necrotizing skin disease. The transmission route for M. ulcerans is unknown, but many insects have been posited as part of the web, including Belostomatids, Naucorids, and Culicids. Aedes albopictus was selected for use in a set of experiments where the first-generation larvae were inoculated with M. ulcerans, and mosquitoes were reared throughout the third generation to interrogate presence and quantity of the bacteria. Using qPCR, second and third generations displayed positivity (22% and 5.6% respectively). 16S V4 sequencing was used to obtain microbiota for all …
Impact Of Carrier Volume And Spray Droplet Size On Pesticide Application Efficacy In Mississippi, Jacob Paul Mcneal
Impact Of Carrier Volume And Spray Droplet Size On Pesticide Application Efficacy In Mississippi, Jacob Paul Mcneal
Theses and Dissertations
The application of pesticides in agriculture production systems is a complex process and involves a series of factors that dynamically interact to impact overall pesticide application efficacy. Spray droplet formation, target impaction and deposition, plant uptake, and subsequent biological response are all functions of pesticide active ingredient, nozzle selection, application pressure, and carrier volume. Smaller spray droplets with a lower kinetic energy result in greater spray droplet retention on the leaf surface relative to larger droplets. Consequently, larger spray droplets with higher kinetic energy are poorly retained on the leaf surface and yield minimal coverage of leaf surface tissue. While …
Frequency Of Illicit Use Of Prescription Stimulants Is Associated With Perceived Adhd Symptoms, Justin Mendonca
Frequency Of Illicit Use Of Prescription Stimulants Is Associated With Perceived Adhd Symptoms, Justin Mendonca
Theses and Dissertations
The frequency of illicit use of prescription stimulants (IUPS) was examined in relation to known risk factors. A hierarchical linear regression (N = 903) was used to evaluate self-reported past-year IUPS and demographic variables. Gender (p < .05), race (p < .05), and GPA (p < .01) were significantly associated with the frequency of past-year illicit use. However, Greek organization membership status, perceived ADHD symptoms and access to prescription stimulant medication were not significant individual correlates of past-year IUPS. Additional analyses were conducted on the user subgroup (n = 101) to determine whether these relationships were similar compared to the general sample. Among users, ASRS Inattention and Hyperactivity-Impulsivity Subscale scores were significantly associated with the frequency of past-year IUPS (p < .05), even after accounting for gender, race, and GPA. Interpretations of these findings and implications for future research are discussed.

The Genetics And Molecular Mechanisms Of Tolerance To 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D) In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.), Loida Moreno Perez
The Genetics And Molecular Mechanisms Of Tolerance To 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic Acid (2,4-D) In Upland Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.), Loida Moreno Perez
Theses and Dissertations
Upland cotton, Gossypium hirsutum L., is a natural source of fiber and a major row crop in the US with an estimated $7 billion raw product value in 2019. However, it is extremely sensitive to the broadleaf herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D). With the evolution of herbicide-resistant weeds compounded by off-target spray damage on conventional cotton varieties outside the transgenic Enlist technology (Dow Agrosciences) of herbicide-tolerant cotton varieties (Dow Agrosciences), there is a need to identify and develop novel sources of herbicide tolerance gene for upland cotton genetic improvement. Cotton chromosome substitution (CS) lines carry introgressions from other cultivated and wild …
Low-Cost Adsorbents For Water Purification, Hasara Dilum Samaraweera
Low-Cost Adsorbents For Water Purification, Hasara Dilum Samaraweera
Theses and Dissertations
Heavy metals, oxyanions (NO3-, PO4-), pharmaceuticals, and dyes in aquatic environments are inevitable economic and health concerns. Ingestion of these contaminants, even in trace amounts, causes long and short-term serious threats to human health. Conventional pollutant mitigation strategies can be costly or ineffective. Due to high efficiency, simplicity, low price, adsorbent reuse, and pollutant (e.g., phosphates) recovery, adsorption has been widely used for wastewater purification. Many efficient, environmentally compatible, and cost-effective sorbents have been successfully applied in environmental remediation. Chapter I is about characterization of graphene-coated pinewood biochar hybrids and evaluation of their copper removal performances. Here, we synthesized three …
Bridging Data Gaps For Strategic Conservation Of Gulf Of Mexico Coastal Region Landscapes, Andrew Challen Shamaskin
Bridging Data Gaps For Strategic Conservation Of Gulf Of Mexico Coastal Region Landscapes, Andrew Challen Shamaskin
Theses and Dissertations
The Gulf Coast Region (GCR) of the United States holds immense ecological and cultural value. However, constant environmental changes, from sea-level rise and hurricanes to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010, threaten many of the values that define the region. Additionally, recent financial settlements from civil and criminal penalties of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill have created an unprecedented opportunity to fund conservation throughout the region. With such a large area of interest (over 700,000 km2) and so many conservation priorities throughout the GCR, there is a great need to strategize which lands are most efficacious for conservation to …
Assessing Effects Of Habitat Amount Vs. Configuration On Avian Diversity In Managed Pine Landscapes, Craig Sklarczyk
Assessing Effects Of Habitat Amount Vs. Configuration On Avian Diversity In Managed Pine Landscapes, Craig Sklarczyk
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding how habitat amount and configuration affect species richness, occurrence or abundance has been one of the major foci of research in ecology and biogeography, given its central importance for conservation planning and landscape management. We conducted bird point counts within clearcuts and mature pine stands of different sizes and configuration in working pine forest in north-central Mississippi to determine species associations. Early-successional and mature pine focal species showed varying response to the proportion and proximity of vegetation conditions in the landscape. While elements of configuration exhibited a greater influence on predicted avian abundance in this landscape, meaning many species …
Improving The Cost-Effectiveness Of Water Wave Measurements And Understanding Of Its Impact On Natural And Restored Marsh Communities, Nigel Temple
Theses and Dissertations
Coastal restoration has become a necessary and ubiquitous practice to enhance and conserve the many ecosystem services lost by marsh degradation. Wave climate is one of the most critical factors to consider for restoration projects. However, knowledge of the ways that waves affect marsh plants and the ecosystem services they provide is limited. The purpose of my dissertation was to improve the effectiveness of coastal marsh restoration by addressing the limitations and gaps associated with plant and ecosystem responses to waves through empirical research with three primary goals: 1) develop and test a low-cost wave gauge, 2) use it to …
The Role Of Sarcoplasmic Reticulum-Mitochondria Interplay In Shaping Pathological Phenotype Development In Cardiac Diseases Marked By Ryanodine Receptor Dysfunction, Brian Tow
Theses and Dissertations
Catecholaminergic polymorphic ventricular tachycardia (CPVT) and pre-diabetic cardiomyopathy (pre-DC) are two cardiac diseases characterized by dysfunction in sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca2+ release channel RyR2. Despite similar defects in RyR2 leading to aberrant Ca2+ release (ACR), CPVT and pre-DC display divergent pathological phenotypes. Recent findings suggest SR-mitochondria interplay could contribute to pathological development; therefore, the role of SR-mitochondria interplay in shaping intracellular Ca2+ signaling was examined in CPVT and pre-DC by pharmacologically modulating mitochondria Ca2+ handling. Mitochondria can affect cytosolic/global Ca2+ dynamics through at least two mechanisms: buffering cytosolic Ca2+, or generating ROS to modulate RyR2 functionality via posttranslational modifications. Our …
An Analysis Of The Glycine Max Sec61 During Its Defense Response To Heterodera Glycines, Hallie Alyssa Troell
An Analysis Of The Glycine Max Sec61 During Its Defense Response To Heterodera Glycines, Hallie Alyssa Troell
Theses and Dissertations
The secretory pathway of G. max performs a prominent role in its defense to H. glycines parasitism, a finding reinforced by the identification of the SNARE-associated gene ALPHA-SNAP-5 being rhg1. Other proteins performing important roles in secretion are Sec61-ALPHA, Sec61-BETA and Sec61-GAMMA which bind to form a trimeric complex that imports proteins into the ER for their eventual secretion. Comparative analyses to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Sec61ALPHA, Sec61BETA and Sec61GAMMA proteins, respectively, shows G. max has 4 Sec61-ALPHA, 9 Sec61-BETA and4 Sec61-GAMMA proteins. At least one paralog from each gene family is expressed in H. glycines-parasitized root cells in G. max, …
Influence Of Boat Activity On Wave Climate In Back Bay Of Biloxi, Ms, Matthew Virden
Influence Of Boat Activity On Wave Climate In Back Bay Of Biloxi, Ms, Matthew Virden
Theses and Dissertations
Wave energy is a major driver for many coastal processes and influences wetland vegetation and shoreline stability. Coastal conservation and restoration projects often include wave climate estimations in the decision-making process for project design. The current method primarily used to estimate a project area's wave climate is the use of wind-wave models. These models use wind speed, wind direction, bathymetry, and fetch to estimate site-specific wave activity. However, these models neglect boat wake which is an important contributor to wave energy in fetch-limited environments. This study used site-specific wave measurements to compare wind-protected and open sites in Back Bay, Mississippi. …
Sperm Functional Genome And Epigenome Regulating Bull Fertility And Sperm Freezability, Muhammet Rasit Ugur
Sperm Functional Genome And Epigenome Regulating Bull Fertility And Sperm Freezability, Muhammet Rasit Ugur
Theses and Dissertations
Artificial insemination (AI) using cryopreserved sperm has an important positive impact on cattle production. Fertility is the most critical trait controlling livestock production; however, molecular, cellular, and physiological determinants of bull fertility and sperm freezability are not well understood. Better understanding of molecular, cellular, and physiological underpinnings of bull fertility may increase the success rate of AI. The objective of this study was to test the hypothesis that expression dynamics of sperm nuclear proteins, post-translational modifications (PTM) of sperm Histone 4 (H4), and seminal plasma metabolome are associated with bull fertility and sperm freezability (P = 0.043). Flow cytometry experiments …
Evaluating Effects Of Contemporary Preemergence Herbicides On Plugged St. Augustinegrass Grow-In Using Multispectral And Traditional Evaluation Methods., Amy L. Wilber
Theses and Dissertations
St. Augustinegrass [Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze] is a widely used lawn grass in the southeastern United States. St. Augustinegrass is typically vegetatively established from plugs or sod. Establishment of St. Augustinegrass sod can be slowed due to weed competition. Weed-infested sod may not be harvestable and is less desirable by end users. Preemergence herbicides are used to prevent weed infestation; however, preemergence herbicides often negatively affect sod grow-in. Current research evaluated the effects of contemporary preemergence herbicides on St. Augustinegrass grow-in from plugs. Grow-in was evaluated using visual estimates of percentage St. Augustinegrass cover, as well as Normalized Difference Vegetation …

The Role Of Microbes And Organic Matter In The Genesis Of Complex Carbonate Facies And Lithologies Referred To As Leopard Rock, Sacramento Mountains, New Mexico, Keith Louris Tischler
Theses and Dissertations
The colloquially named leopard rock of the Holder and Laborcita formations (Late Pennsylvanian-Early Permian) is an algal/foraminiferal boundstone that occurs within a cyclic, interfingered, carbonate siliciclastic system in the Sacramento Mountains of southeastern New Mexico) and often accompanies phylloid algal mounds. This project is the first to fully characterize and evaluate the evidence that leopard rock is microbial in origin and assess the potential influence of methane seeps and deltaic organics on its genesis. Characterization of the algal-foraminiferal boundstone revealed a highly variable expression in outcrop based on geolocated photo imagery, hand samples, optical microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) …
The Influenza Ribonucleoprotein Complex And Its Impact On Viral Replication And Evolution, Kaitlyn Waters
The Influenza Ribonucleoprotein Complex And Its Impact On Viral Replication And Evolution, Kaitlyn Waters
Theses and Dissertations
The ribonucleoprotein (RNP) complex of influenza A viruses (IAVs) is responsible for replication and transcription of viral RNA and genome, respectively. Mutations in the RNP genes have been identified to play a role in host adaptations and tissue tropisms of IAVs, and compatibility among these genes has been implicated as an important factor for facilitating reassortment of IAVs. Furthermore, mutations and reassortment can drastically impact the polymerase activities of the RNP complex in vitro. However, the simultaneous role both of these mechanisms play in enhancing or diminishing polymerase activities of divergent IAVs remains opaque, and therefore, a greater understanding of …

The Impact Of Location And Time Of Day On The Expression Of Social And Physical Maintenance Behaviors In Wild Asian Elephants (Elephas Maximus) In Thailand, Summer Fiori
Theses and Dissertations
Much of what we know about Asian elephant (Elephas maximus) behavioral ecology is the result of long-term ethological studies on wild elephants in India and Sri Lanka or experimental research on captive elephant behavior and cognition. While it is important to study the behavior and ecology of elephants to understand the evolution of adaptations that have made them well-suited for their natural environments, there is also a growing need to study populations of wild Asian elephants for applied conservation purposes. More specifically, elephants are endangered and are facing increasing threats such as human-elephant conflict. In this study, behavioral data …

A Nonhuman Primate Model Of The Out Of Africa Theory Utilizing Chinese- And Indian-Derived Rhesus Macaques (Macaca Mulatta), Jacob N. Hunter
Theses and Dissertations
Evidence suggests that certain genotypic variants associated with novelty-seeking and aggressiveness, such as the 7-repeat dopamine D4 receptor variant (DRD4-7R), short (s) allele of the serotonin transporter (5-HTT), and the low-activity variant of the MAOa promoter (MAOa-L), are more prevalent in human groups that radiated out of Africa than human groups that remained in Africa. Rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta), like humans, are a widespread species of primates that needed to adapt to different regional environments with one group, Indian-derived rhesus macaques, largely occupying predictable and resource-rich environments, while the other group, the Chinese-derived rhesus macaques, has come to occupy less …
In Vitro Study Of Cog Complex Association With Golgi Membrane, Wei Wang
In Vitro Study Of Cog Complex Association With Golgi Membrane, Wei Wang
Theses and Dissertations
The Golgi is the central organelle of the protein transportation in eukaryotic cells. Vesicle tethering and fusion on Golgi needs a special tether molecule called Conserved Oligomeric Golgi Complex (COG). Since COG is not naturally a membrane protein, how COG remains on the Golgi during vesicle tethering and fusion is unclear. In this project, direct COG binding to three types of Golgi molecules were tested. Golgi SNAREs STX5, GS28, and GS15 are capable of binding to COG to a different extent, while Golgi SNARE Ykt6 has a poor binding to COG. Lysosomal SNARE STX7 has very low level of COG …

Body States Of Asian Elephants Within And Around Protected Areas In The Salakpra Wildlife Sanctuary, Kanchanaburi, Thailand, Caitlyn Thai
Theses and Dissertations
Researchers are becoming increasingly aware that studying a species’ landscape of fear or, more broadly, their emotional states, can better inform cognitive questions about how animals navigate their environments. Vigilance behaviors are one way to determine how certain species perceive and respond to risky situations. Due to rapid environmental change, large animals such as elephants are experiencing risky encounters with humans more often than ever before. This study aims to investigate Asian elephants’ expressions of body states and how they might regulate their behavior based on perceived environmental risk or change. Specifically, we investigated the behavioral responses of Asian elephants …

A Qualitative Examination Of Homeless Lgbtq+ Adults In Arkansas, Trye Price
Theses and Dissertations
In the United States, LGBTQ+ individuals are disproportionately represented among the homeless population. While homeless, members of the LGBTQ+ community are more likely to face discrimination, stigmatization, and victimization than their heterosexual counterparts. Although previous research on homelessness among the LGBTQ+ community has been insightful, we know little about the lived experiences of homeless LGBTQ+ adults in Arkansas. Therefore, the current study sought to understand the life experiences of LGBTQ+ adults in Arkansas who are or were homeless at one time in their adult lives. More specifically, this study focused on how individuals enter and exit homelessness, incidents of physical …
