Functional And Structural Characterization Of Trms, Omid John Zare-Mehrjerdi
Functional And Structural Characterization Of Trms, Omid John Zare-Mehrjerdi
Theses and Dissertations
In plants, the cell wall makes cell migration impossible so plants must carefully control the orientation of cell division to ensure proper tissue development. Before prophase, the division plane is marked by formation of the preprophase band (PPB) which disassembles at the onset of prometaphase. During cytokinesis, the cell plate localizes to the division plane and attaches to the cell wall where the PPB was located. The proteins Tonneau 1 (TON1), Tonneau 2 (TON2), and the Tonneau 1 Recruiting Motif (TRM) family may be involved in the regulation of cell division orientation and PPB formation as plants with mutations in …
Microplastic In Agricultural Tile Drainage And Stream Water During Periods Of High And Low Flow, Laurel Grace Mcginnis
Microplastic In Agricultural Tile Drainage And Stream Water During Periods Of High And Low Flow, Laurel Grace Mcginnis
Theses and Dissertations
Microplastic accumulation is one of the greatest changes to every ecosystem on Earth. Microplastics, < 5 mm in diameter, are an emerging contaminant of concern and are found across every habitat. Microplastics are directly released into the environment from industrial and personal care products or are a result of degradation and fragmentation of larger plastic debris. Microplastic contamination in the natural environment can have negative chemical and ecological effects on aquatic biota and humans. Rivers are an important transport pathway of microplastics from terrestrial to marine ecosystems. There is very little data on the abundance of microplastics in freshwater. To better understand the magnitude of microplastic contamination in freshwater, the concentration of microplastic in agricultural drainage tile outlets and stream waters in McLean County, Illinois during Spring and Summer (high and low flow periods) were measured. Grab samples were collected from five tile and four stream sites across 4 watersheds. Microplastic concentrations at each site were compared using ArcGIS. Microplastics are present in both agricultural drainage tile outlets and agricultural streams during Spring and Summer with approximately 80% of the microplastic particles being fibers. We did find a significant difference in microplastic concentrations between Spring and Summer but no significant difference between tile and stream sites within seasons. Our results suggest tile outlets and the tiles themselves may be a significant source of microplastics to streams and may lead to substantial inputs to downstream systems like drinking water reservoirs. KEYWORDS: microplastic; contaminant; rivers; freshwater; agricultural drainage tile; drinking water reservoirs

Rails At Different Scales: Ecological And Evolutionary Drivers Of Vocal Behavior In Rallidae, Daniel Lorenz Goldberg
Rails At Different Scales: Ecological And Evolutionary Drivers Of Vocal Behavior In Rallidae, Daniel Lorenz Goldberg
Theses and Dissertations
Animal signals used for communication, such as vocalizations and other sounds, are not produced in a vacuum, but evolve under a suite of selective pressures, including environmental and social factors, sender and receiver physiology, habitat features, and predation pressure, as well as phylogenetic history and morphological constraints. However, the extent to which these pressures have shaped the calling behavior of the avian family Rallidae is relatively unknown, despite the variety of different vocalizations of rails and the extent to which they use duetting and exhibit conspecific attraction. Here I answer a series of questions related to the adaptive drivers of …

Algal Biodiversity Survey Of The Middle Chattahoochee River Using Dna Metabarcoding, Amanda Howell
Theses and Dissertations
Aquatic plants play vital roles in water systems by providing ecological services, and one group that is understudied is algae. Algae play a crucial role in water systems as bioindicators and primary producers. They can be challenging to identify with the naked eye, so researchers have been using DNA metabarcoding, where DNA belonging to specific taxa can be isolated and identified from water samples. The objective of this study was to conduct an algal biodiversity survey on the middle Chattahoochee River system in Georgia. Water samples (1L) were filtered and sent to RTL Genomics for sequencing and processing; the data …
Shaking Up The Immunoglobulin Superfamily, Christopher Mendoza
Shaking Up The Immunoglobulin Superfamily, Christopher Mendoza
Theses and Dissertations
The immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF) is a large protein superfamily of membrane and soluble proteins that influence recognition, binding, and adhesion. Among members of this family are cell adhesion molecules (CAMs), which form cell-cell contact points that play key roles in development, cell polarization, and cellular fate. Cadherins (CADs) are calcium-dependent proteins of the adherens junction (AJ), and polarize epithelium and endothelium. The tight junction (TJ) is a multiprotein junctional complex whose function is to control the permeability of the paracellular pathway. At the membrane level, TJs are composed of three types of proteins: claudins (CLDNs), occludin (OCLN) and junctional adhesion …
Family Structure Variables As Proxies For Socialization And Their Effect On Cognitive Decline: An Empirical Analysis, Peter Amato
Family Structure Variables As Proxies For Socialization And Their Effect On Cognitive Decline: An Empirical Analysis, Peter Amato
Theses and Dissertations
The risk of several common diseases causing dramatic cognitive decline (Alzheimer’s, dementia, anterograde memory loss) and short-term memory impairment are all common, even inevitable ailments as one continues to age. There is a body of literature that suggests stronger social networks reduce the chance of cognitive decline through mentally stimulating activities or socializing. This study examines the rates of cognitive decline in people with larger families by using ordinary least squares (OLS) regression and a cox hazard proportion hazards model to examine the protective effects of different family structures on the rates of cognitive decline using the American Community Supplement …

Spatial And Temporal Variability In Carbon And Nutrient Concentrations Within The North Inlet Estuary,Sc, Heather Kish
Spatial And Temporal Variability In Carbon And Nutrient Concentrations Within The North Inlet Estuary,Sc, Heather Kish
Theses and Dissertations
Coastal wetlands provide numerous ecosystem services, including the ability to sequester and store significant amounts of organic carbon (so-called “blue carbon”). Variability in carbon storage within marshes represents a major information gap in understanding and quantifying the role saltmarshes play in the global carbon cycle. This study quantified decadal and small-scale variability in carbon and nutrient concentrations across tidal inundation gradients in the relatively pristine North Inlet Estuary, South Carolina. Sampling took place within two segments of the marsh platform of Crab Haul Creek, the landward-most basin within North Inlet. In the summer of 2020, a total of 200 sediment …

It Takes One To Know One: Authentic Learning And Multiple Literacies In A 100 Level, Technical Writing Classroom, Matthew Sterner-Neely
Theses and Dissertations
At Ciudad Community College (pseudonym) and across the Colorado Community College System, the course competencies for Technical Writing I (ENG 131) have more than tripled to accommodate ENG 131 as a guaranteed transfer course equivalent to ENG 121: English Composition I. Unfortunately, this has had the effect of increasing the workload for students, and the increase in competencies plus the struggle that students already had in meeting course competencies demanded the need for an intervention. The purpose of this convergent, mixed methods, action research study was to examine the effects of authentic learning on the competency levels of technical writing …

Theses and Dissertations
This study captured the lived experiences of three African American, female classroom teachers who left the profession within three years of beginning their careers. The main goal that led this research was to center the perspectives of African American women in the conversation about teacher retention, turnover, and attrition percentages that plague the field of education. The primary questions that guided this study were: (1) “What can be learned from the life stories of former African American female teachers who left the teaching profession from South Carolina public classrooms during their induction years?”, (2) “What do their life stories reveal …
Study Of The Effect Of B-Cell-Intrinsic Mhcii Antigen Presentation On Germinal Center B Cell Evolution Using The Brainbow Mouse Model, Nia Hall
Theses and Dissertations
Major histocompatibility complex class II (MHCII) are molecules that are essential for B cell activation, as well as clonal competition among activated B cell clones during germinal center (GC) reactions. However, it is unknown to what extent MHCII drives the selection of some clones over others. This is of particular importance since MHCII is highly polymorphic with the ability to indirectly alter gutmicrobiome composition by altering the immunoglobulin A (IgA) repertoire. To study this, we utilized a novel triple-transgenic mouse model to assess how B-cellintrinsic MHCII influences GC responses and GC clonal diversity, with an eyeforward to understanding the relevance …
Impaired Metabolic Flexibility In A Mouse Model Of Leigh Syndrome, Richard Sterling Mccain Jr
Impaired Metabolic Flexibility In A Mouse Model Of Leigh Syndrome, Richard Sterling Mccain Jr
Theses and Dissertations
Metabolic dysfunction burdens tissues with high energy demands, particularly the brain. Leigh syndrome is a mitochondrial encephalopathy stemming from genetic defects in the electron transport chain. Leigh syndrome patients develop lactic acidosis, ataxia, bilateral necrotizing lesions in the brainstem and basal ganglia, lesion microgliosis, and eventually death due to respiratory failure. The NADH dehydrogenase [ubiquinone] iron-sulfur protein 4 (NDUFS4) knockout mouse is an established model of Leigh syndrome due to impaired assembly of mitochondrial Complex I that develops motoric deficits and necrotizing lesions in the brainstem vestibular nuclei and olfactory bulb. In addition to the Complex I-derived bioenergetics defect, altered …

Understanding what experiences led FGCS to pursue a degree in a STEM field may help attract more students to STEM and help meet the demand of filling future STEM jobs.
In this study, FGCS in the Opportunity Scholars Program …
Investigations On The Surface Chemistry Of Colloidal Quantum Dots Towards Fluorescent Biological Probes, John Hardin Dunlap
Investigations On The Surface Chemistry Of Colloidal Quantum Dots Towards Fluorescent Biological Probes, John Hardin Dunlap
Theses and Dissertations
Colloidal semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have garnered significant interest as promising materials for biological applications due to their improved photostability and narrow, tunable photoluminescence properties compared to organic fluorophores. To facilitate their utility as fluorescent bioimaging probes, QDs must undergo post-synthetic modifications to exchange their native hydrophobic ligands from synthesis with hydrophilic ones that enable colloidal dispersions in aqueous environments. Many examples exist that demonstrate surface modifications for water-soluble QDs and their efficacy in biological systems, however, there is a need to develop a more thorough understanding of how hydrophilic ligands coordinate to QD surfaces in order to develop more …
“Hungering And Thirsting” For Education: Education, Presbyterians, And African Americans In The South, 1880-1920, Rachel Marie Young
“Hungering And Thirsting” For Education: Education, Presbyterians, And African Americans In The South, 1880-1920, Rachel Marie Young
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates the relationship between the white-dominated Presbyterian Church in the United States of America (PCUSA) and African Americans from 1880-1920, exploring the motivations, philosophies, and strategies of the PCUSA and the ways that they used education to achieve their goals of helping forge educated and devoutly Christian African Americans. The church’s history highlights the ways in which Presbyterian paternalism developed in the years leading up to 1880, as well as contradictions in white church members’ understandings of race relations and their conflation of civic duty with religious responsibility. The church’s efforts in primary education provide a window into …
Sex Differences And Neuroimmune Effects Of Microglial Response In The Mesolimbic Reward Pathway In Nicotine Substance Use Disorder, Erin Leigh Anderson
Sex Differences And Neuroimmune Effects Of Microglial Response In The Mesolimbic Reward Pathway In Nicotine Substance Use Disorder, Erin Leigh Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Smoking remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with less than 5% of smokers attempting to quit succeeding. This is due to the unpleasant withdrawal symptomology, which includes affective symptoms, such as irritability, weight gain, anxiety, and severe craving among others, as well as the cognitive effects, such as difficulty concentrating. This low smoking cessation success rate is also thought to be due to the long-lasting sensitization of nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) leading to long-term neuroadaptations in the brain’s reward system and alterations in synaptic plasticity that occur following chronic nicotine exposure and withdrawal. Glial …
Characterizations Of Dissolved Organic Carbon At Hydrothermal Systems Of The Midcayman Rise, Aaron Mau
Characterizations Of Dissolved Organic Carbon At Hydrothermal Systems Of The Midcayman Rise, Aaron Mau
Theses and Dissertations
Marine dissolved organic carbon (DOC) is a carbon reservoir comparable in size to all atmospheric CO2 and is composed primarily of refractory material which can be thousands of years old. Circulation through hydrothermal systems has been demonstrated to profoundly alter this material, but the mechanisms that lead to addition, removal, and alteration of DOC are poorly understood. Consequently, the contribution of hydrothermal systems to organic carbon cycling in the deep ocean – and the biological and geochemical processes exhibited at different venting environments – remain highly uncertain.
In January 2020, samples were collected from two hydrothermal vent fields at the …

Characterization Of A Novel Fe-S Cluster Transfer Pathway Between Grx4 And Sufa In Escherichia Coli, Enis Sanchez
Characterization Of A Novel Fe-S Cluster Transfer Pathway Between Grx4 And Sufa In Escherichia Coli, Enis Sanchez
Theses and Dissertations
Biogenesis of iron-sulfur (Fe-S) clusters is an essential process in living organisms due to the critical role of Fe-S cluster proteins in a myriad of cellular functions. During the assembly of Fe-S clusters, multi-protein complexes are used to drive the mobilization and protection of reactive sulfur and iron intermediates, regulate assembly of various Fe-S clusters on an ATPase-dependent, multi-protein scaffold, and target nascent clusters to their downstream protein targets. In each of the Fe-S cluster biogenesis steps, specific protein-protein interactions (PPIs) are required for proper function of the assembly pathway. The target pathway is the sulfur formation (Suf) pathway for …
Bayesian Calibration Of The Icrp Zirconium Biokinetic Model And Use Of Canned Priors For The Evaluation Of Bioassay, Thomas Raymond Labone
Bayesian Calibration Of The Icrp Zirconium Biokinetic Model And Use Of Canned Priors For The Evaluation Of Bioassay, Thomas Raymond Labone
Theses and Dissertations
The International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) publishes biokinetic models that relate measurements of radioactive material in the body and excreta (bioassay) to the amount of the material taken into the body (intake). Given the intake and the biokinetic model, radiation dose to organs and tissues can be calculated. The ICRP approximates the biokinetics of radioactive materials in the body with compartmental models expressed mathematically as a system of ordinary differential equations, for which they provide point estimates of the rate constants. Inaccurate estimates of intake and radiation dose can result in cases where the biokinetics of an individual differ …
Optimization And Application Of Electrochemical Probes For Neurotransmitter Detection, Colby E. Witt
Optimization And Application Of Electrochemical Probes For Neurotransmitter Detection, Colby E. Witt
Theses and Dissertations
The brain is a complex matrix that is difficult to study. Signaling molecules, neurotransmitters, are constantly being released and sequestered back into neurons within milliseconds to facilitate communication and normal function, a process called neurotransmission. There are few analytical techniques available to selectively probe such a dynamic system, and even fewer can detect these discrete changes in real-time. In order to make robust measurements in the brain you need speed, sensitivity, selectivity and small probe size, which are encompassed by fast-voltammetry with microelectrodes. Traditional fast-voltammetry at carbon fiber microelectrodes (fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV)) requires background subtraction to overcome the large …
