One Space Can Put Her In A Different Place - How Do We Inhabit Spaces Differently?, Farida Youssef
One Space Can Put Her In A Different Place - How Do We Inhabit Spaces Differently?, Farida Youssef
Theses and Dissertations
In Egypt, a male-dominated society, women are forced to constantly negotiate with patriarchal systems. Dichotomies and paradoxes between principles governing different gendered roles, religion and cultural codes and westernization and commercialization have been continuously shaping Egyptian women’s status over the past decades. This is exhibited in public spaces, where women’s current preferences, perceptions and behavior emphasize the dominance of one gender over the other. This research aims for a better understanding of space inhabitance through a gendered lens. It questions the roles the society and the urban spaces play in the daily lives of women through examining women’s perception of …
Molecular Theoretical Model For Lipid Bilayers: Adsorption Of Lipidated Proteins On Lipid Bilayers As A Function Of Bilayer Composition And Curvature, Shauna Celeste Kennard
Molecular Theoretical Model For Lipid Bilayers: Adsorption Of Lipidated Proteins On Lipid Bilayers As A Function Of Bilayer Composition And Curvature, Shauna Celeste Kennard
Theses and Dissertations
Protein localization on biological membranes is motivated by either highly selective recognition of specific target membrane components or nonspecific attraction to general physical properties of the membrane, such as charge, lipid heterogeneity, and curvature. Here we discuss the interaction between lipidated proteins and lipid bilayer membranes from a comprehensive examination of how features of the membrane and its lipid constituents, including lipid composition, headgroup size, degree of tail saturation, tail length (bilayer thickness), and membrane geometry, affect the adsorption ability of the proteins. Of key importance is the strong interconnection among these compositional and morphological elements of the membrane in …
The Apoe Ε4 Allele Association With Cholesterol Related Phenotypes In The Mexican American Population, Stephanie Lozano
The Apoe Ε4 Allele Association With Cholesterol Related Phenotypes In The Mexican American Population, Stephanie Lozano
Theses and Dissertations
Diseases linked to high cholesterol have been well studied and several diseases-associated candidate genes have been suggested. Among these, the apolipoprotein E gene (APOE) gene associated with lipid metabolism and lipid-related traits was reported in the non-Hispanic population. There are three types of alleles APOE ε2, ε3, and ε4. The APOE ε4 allele has been identified as a biomarker for Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and cardiovascular disease (CVD). In recent years, there have been limited studies regarding the association between the APOE gene and hypercholesterolemia in the Mexican American population. Therefore, the aim of this study is to investigate …

Cucurbitacin B: A Potential Natural Agent For Targeting Tumor Immune Cell Population, Emmanuel Anning
Cucurbitacin B: A Potential Natural Agent For Targeting Tumor Immune Cell Population, Emmanuel Anning
Theses and Dissertations
Immune checkpoint blockade (PD1, PDL-1 and CTLA-4) immunotherapies have emerged as the breakthrough in cancer treatment. However, some malignancies show marginal response. One factor that influences the efficacy of immunotherapy is the development of immunosuppressive tumor microenvironment (TME), caused by infiltration of myeloid derived suppressor cells (MDSCs) and tumor associated macrophages (TAM) into the tumor, facilitating metastatic tumor growth and immunotherapy resistance. We have identified Cucurbitacin B (Cuc. B), a potent small molecule that targets TAM and MDSCs and inhibits Stat3, CSF-1R, and PI3Kγ signaling axis at lower doses compared to the pharmacological inhibitor of PI3Kγ (IPI-549). IL-4 polarization of …
Targeting Mutated Kras And Galectin-1 In Pancreatic Cancer, Ana Izavelle Martinez Bulnes
Targeting Mutated Kras And Galectin-1 In Pancreatic Cancer, Ana Izavelle Martinez Bulnes
Theses and Dissertations
The poor patient survival rate in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains a challenge. KRAS activating point mutation on codon-12 is found in 70–95 percent of PDAC patients, and no progress in inhibiting KRAS has been obtained thus far. KRASG12D is a transcription factor that controls cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. Recent preliminary and published research indicates that Galectin-1 (Gal-1) levels are high in both PDAC and stromal cells, which modulates tumor microenvironment and metastasis. As a result, we created a new combination treatment for PDAC that targets both proliferation and metastasis in PDAC by targeting mutant KRASG12D and Gal-1. This …
Associative Learning In The Monodelphis Domestica Utilizing The Cpa Paradigm, Joseph Caleb Cantu
Associative Learning In The Monodelphis Domestica Utilizing The Cpa Paradigm, Joseph Caleb Cantu
Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to investigate associative learning in the Monodelphis domestica by utilizing the conditioned place aversion paradigm (CPA). The Monodelphis domestica has been used as an animal model for research in multiple fields; however, there is still little information regarding associative learning or utilizing a CPA paradigm. Expanding the literature of the Monodelphis domestica would be adding to the limited research concerning associative learning utilizing the CPA paradigm.
Encoding Color Sequences In Active Tile Self-Assembly, Sonya Cirlos
Encoding Color Sequences In Active Tile Self-Assembly, Sonya Cirlos
Theses and Dissertations
Constructing patterns is a well-studied problem in both theoretical and experimental self-assembly with much of the work focused on multi-staged assembly. In this paper, we study building 1D patterns in a model of active self assembly: Tile Automata. This is a generalization of the 2-handed assembly model that borrows the concept of state changes from Cellular Automata. In this work we further develop the model by partitioning states as colors and show lower and upper bounds for building patterned assemblies based on an input pattern. Our first two sections utilize recent results to build binary strings along …
Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On Mangrove And Saltmarsh Habitats, Elena A. Flores
Effects Of Nutrient Enrichment On Mangrove And Saltmarsh Habitats, Elena A. Flores
Theses and Dissertations
Nutrient over-enrichment is a global threat to coastal and marine environments. Yet, system-specific attributes of estuarine and coastal ecosystems may result in large differences in their sensitivity and susceptibility to such threat. In tropical latitudes, plant species adapted to low-nutrient habitats generally have nutrient-conservation mechanisms that acquire, use, and internally recycle nutrients efficiently. Thus, a major challenge for managers and decision makers is to develop a predictive and holistic understanding of how nutrient loading alters ecosystem functions and therefore ecosystem services. The objective of the present research is to document short and long-term effects of persistent nutrient …
Screening For Potential Therapeutic Targets Of Yb-1 Protein Using A Bioinformatics Approach, Omar Muneer Karkoutly
Screening For Potential Therapeutic Targets Of Yb-1 Protein Using A Bioinformatics Approach, Omar Muneer Karkoutly
Theses and Dissertations
Treatment options for cancer are becoming much more limited due to the robust characteristics of cancer that allows them to rapidly develop drug resistance. This may be a result of cancer cells’ ability to switch between differentiated and undifferentiated states (plasticity). Diagnostic measurement and detection of cancer and its progression is essential for developing successful treatments. Specific cancer targets whose expressions are highly associated with increased incidence, risk, and spread of cancer therefore become perfect targets for therapeutic intervention. One such novel target that is still being studied is the Y-box binding protein 1 (YB-1), which …

An Analysis Of Income And Healthcare Disparities Across Minority Populations By Incorporating Community Resource Collaboration In Public Policy, Ohioze O. Obadan
Theses and Dissertations
There is widespread literature on the connection between public policy, resource allocation, and income and health inequalities among minority communities. While various services are created to help communities, the distribution and allocation of these services remain elusive, without any collaboration towards a common objective among public policy leaders. This paper investigates the disparities in the access to healthcare within Florida, a state selected because of its documented problems with healthcare access. This thesis research analyzes the income and health inequalities in minority populations in Florida by integrating community resource collaboration into public policy. The study used secondary data from public …
An Analysis Of Mental Health, Psychosocial Stressors, And Social Support Among Latinx Students Who Relocate For College, Lisa A. Lozano
An Analysis Of Mental Health, Psychosocial Stressors, And Social Support Among Latinx Students Who Relocate For College, Lisa A. Lozano
Theses and Dissertations
Relocating for college is one facet of the college adjustment process that has been scarcely explored. Research suggests that relocated students report more severe depression symptoms (Reyes-Rodriguez et al., 2012), poorer social adjustment (Brooks & Dubois, 1995), and worse mental health overall (King et al., 2011) compared to nonrelocated students. This study hypothesized that relocated Latinx college students would experience more severe mental health concerns (depression, anxiety, and stress), psychosocial stress (acculturative stress, loneliness, and sense of belonging), and perceived social support than their nonrelocated counterparts. 159 underclassmen with permanent residence in a South Texas community were surveyed in a …
Influence Of Paclitaxel Nanomedicine On The Pancreatic Tumor Immune Components, Godwin Peasah-Darkwah
Influence Of Paclitaxel Nanomedicine On The Pancreatic Tumor Immune Components, Godwin Peasah-Darkwah
Theses and Dissertations
Pancreatic cancer (PanCa) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortalities in the U.S due to ineffective therapeutic options. Pancreatic tumors are highly desmoplastic and inhibit efficient uptake of therapeutic payloads. Paclitaxel (PTX) has been tested in PanCa therapy with marginally better clinical outcomes, but remain limited by its poor hemocompatibility, biodistribution and intracellular accumulation in tumor cells. Thus, we synthesized a next generation nanoparticle system for PTX to improve its pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PKPD) in treating PanCa. We also examined ability of the nano formulation to potentiate gemcitabine (GEM) activity in combating chemoresistance in the pancreatic tumor microenvironment …
Statistical Methods For Analyzing Dependence Structures With Applications In Single-Cell Experiments, Zhen Yang
Statistical Methods For Analyzing Dependence Structures With Applications In Single-Cell Experiments, Zhen Yang
Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation focuses on studying methods in dependence structure analysis. In particular, it consists of two topics: (1) modeling dynamic correlation in zero-inflated bivariate count data; and (2) gene co-expression latent factor analysis for cell-type clustering.
In Chapter 2, a zero-inflated negative binomial model for analyzing the dynamic correlation in zero-inflated bivariate count data is proposed. Interactions between biological molecules in a cell are tightly coordinated and often highly dynamic. As a result of these varying signaling activities, changes in gene co-expression patterns could often be observed. The advancements in next-generation sequencing tech-nologies bring new statistical challenges for studying these …
Characterization Of The Responses To Chronic Stress In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Amy Laura Knight
Characterization Of The Responses To Chronic Stress In Caenorhabditis Elegans, Amy Laura Knight
Theses and Dissertations
Exposure to chronic temperature stress influences organismal phenotypes that are important for human health, agriculture, and ecology. In this thesis, the model organism Caenorhabditis elegans was used to study the effects of temperature stress on reproduction and lifespan. It was found that worms demonstrated a rapid shut down in egg-laying between 18-24 hours of exposure to 28°C. Despite this reproductive defect, the overall lifespan of worms was unaffected. At the molecular level, heat shock factor 1 (HSF-1), a regulator of the protective molecular pathway known as the heat shock response (HSR), was identified as important for progeny production during heat …

Targeting Ribosome Biogenesis For Pancreatic Cancer Treatment, Carlos Perez Iii
Targeting Ribosome Biogenesis For Pancreatic Cancer Treatment, Carlos Perez Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Pancreatic cancer (PanCa) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death in the United States. Currently, PanCa is one of the recalcitrant cancers that has very limited therapeutic options available for its treatment. The current standard care of PanCa is gemcitabine (GEM) alone or in combination with FOLFIRINOX, nab-paclitaxel, erlotinib, or 5-FU PanCa, which often show poor response. Therefore, new treatment strategies are required for the prevention and treatment of cancer. Ribosome biogenesis process is dysregulated in most of the cancer types of results in production of more ribosomes and synthesis of oncoproteins which lead to the induction, progression, …
Methodological Mutability: Shifting Research In The Rhetoric Of Health And Medicine, John Schuler Benson Iii
Methodological Mutability: Shifting Research In The Rhetoric Of Health And Medicine, John Schuler Benson Iii
Theses and Dissertations
The Rhetoric of Health and Medicine (RHM) is a growing body of scholarship that pulls from technical communication, rhetorical theory, and a number of other disciplines to inquire about the capacities of rhetoric at the intersection of medical practitioners and scholars, the medical humanities, and the publics they inform and treat. Among RHM scholars there is a consensus that the field’s methodological diversity is one of its greatest strengths; indeed, field leaders articulate one of RHM’s exigencies as “encouraging methodological collaboration and experimentation” (Melonçon and Scott, Methodologies 4). This dissertation takes up these calls with the introduction of shifting, a …
Sensory Processing In Male Children With Fragile X Syndrome And Idiopathic Autism: Implications For Maladaptive Behavior And Within-Syndrome Heterogeneity, Chandler Knott
Theses and Dissertations
Proficient sensory processing affords adaptive responses that are necessary for daily functioning. Atypical sensory processing patterns are common across neurodevelopmental disorders, including autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and fragile X syndrome (FXS), two disorders with a high degree of phenotypic overlap. However, little is known about whether types of atypical sensory processing in FXS vary as a function of genetic etiology or the presence of ASD. Atypical sensory processing has been also associated with maladaptive outcomes in certain clinical populations; however, the impact of these impairments on internalizing and externalizing behavior remains unknown in FXS. Study participants included 37 male children …

Mechanisms Of Connectivity In Neuronal Development, Janay Vacharasin
Theses and Dissertations
The development of neuronal connectivity requires the careful orchestration of multiple cellular processes including the control of neuronal arborization and synapse formation or function. Defects in these processes during neuronal development will give rise to disorders of neuronal connectivity like autism. In the present work, we examine the genetic and epigenetic mechanisms that build the neuronal wiring of the developing brain. We use human stem cell-derived neurons to study neuronal arborization and function focusing on genetic and environmental risk factors of neurodevelopmental disorders that include autism and intellectual disability. Specifically, we focused on the contribution of the endomembrane, chromatin, and …

Theses and Dissertations
Bioarchaeological studies have provided important information about mortality patterns during the Second Pandemic of Plague, including the Black Death, but to date have focused exclusively on European contexts. This study represents a temporal and spatial expansion of plague bioarchaeology, focusing on Central Asia, the origin of the Second Pandemic. I examine the relationship between stature, gender, and plague mortality during an outbreak of plague at two fortified settlements in northern Kyrgyzstan in 1338-39, the earliest archaeological sites known to contain victims of the Black Death in Eurasia.
Stature is frequently used in bioarchaeology as a proxy for exposures to developmental …
Mechanisms And Impact Of Hypoxia Regulated Inhibins In Cancer, Ben Allen Horst
Mechanisms And Impact Of Hypoxia Regulated Inhibins In Cancer, Ben Allen Horst
Theses and Dissertations
Inhibins are heterodimeric ligands within the TGFβ superfamily, comprised of an α-subunit (INHA) and a β-subunit (either INHBA or INHBB) with emergent roles in cancer. Inhibins are biomarkers of disease burden and prognosis in a subset of cancers and utilize the coreceptors betaglycan (TGFBR3) and endoglin (ENG) for physiological or pathological outcomes. Previously, we found inhibin promotes angiogenesis in ovarian cancer however no mechanism of regulation for inhibin expression in cancer has been established. Hypoxia, a driver of tumor growth and metastasis, regulates angiogenic pathways that are targets for vessel normalization and ovarian cancer management. …

In Vivo And In Vitro Investigations Of Mammalian Stem Cell Development: Neurogenesis And Pituitary Progenitors, Allison Culver
Theses and Dissertations
Human development is tightly regulated by complex mechanisms to pattern the early embryo and form specialized tissues. Understanding this regulation is of fundamental importance and can help further understand disease pathologies. Because it is difficult to observe the processes of interest, researchers must rely on the use of model systems. Our research goal is to combine both animal models and in vitro stem cell cultures to address key questions about the mechanisms of development for both the pituitary gland and brain. It is estimated that there are 290-455 cases per million of congenital hypopituitarism. In addition, autism spectrum disorder (ASD) …
