The Predictiveness Of Gendered Racism On The Well-Being Of Women Of Color, Mallika Chakrabarti
The Predictiveness Of Gendered Racism On The Well-Being Of Women Of Color, Mallika Chakrabarti
Theses and Dissertations
Research suggests a reduced sense of well-being in women of color who have been experiencing discrimination based on gender or race. Surprisingly, the intersectional discrimination of both gender and race, termed as Gendered Racism, on women of color has received much less attention than the individual variables. The present study seeks to fill a void in literature by offering to examine some effects of gendered racism on aspects of well-being in this population. This study examines the predictiveness of intersectional discrimination based on race and gender – called Gendered Racism - on the well-being of women of color. Well-being was …
The Interplay Between Parp-1 And Histone Modifications In Transcriptional Regulation During Development And Heat Shock Response, Gbolahan Gbenga Bamgbose
The Interplay Between Parp-1 And Histone Modifications In Transcriptional Regulation During Development And Heat Shock Response, Gbolahan Gbenga Bamgbose
Theses and Dissertations
Poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase 1 (PARP-1), a multifunctional nuclear enzyme, plays a crucial role in transcriptional regulation through its three functional domains: the N-terminal DNA-binding domain (DBD), the automodification domain (AD), and the C-terminal domain, which includes the WGR and the catalytic domains. Despite its importance, the mechanisms directing PARP-1 to chromatin remain unclear and PARP-1’s role in development is still poorly understood. In chapter II, we interrogated the role of PARP-1 domains in PARP-1 to chromatin. We used ChIP-seq of YFP-tagged deletional isoforms of PARP-1 and a construct that lacks only the first zinc finger domain (ΔZnI). Interestingly, our findings suggest …

Lyme disease, caused by Borrelia burgdorferi, is currently the most prevalent vector borne disease in North America. With the CDC estimating almost 500,000 new cases every year, methods are needed to control the vector, the black legged tick (Ixodes scapularis). Like other tick-borne diseases, Lyme disease is zoonotic and involves tick parasitism on rodent reservoirs in the wild. The main reservoir host of Lyme disease is the white-footed mouse (Peromyscus leucopus). This study aims to explore the effectiveness of a reservoir targeted control approach by the treatment of white-footed mice with oral isoxazoline class drugs. …
Understanding Nanog's Role During Cell Differentiation, Oluwatobiloba Samuel Aminu
Understanding Nanog's Role During Cell Differentiation, Oluwatobiloba Samuel Aminu
Theses and Dissertations
Pluripotency is characterized by the capacity to self-renew and differentiate into all cell types. This state relies on both extrinsic factors, such as leukemia inhibitory factor and bone morphogenetic protein, and intrinsic factors, including pluripotent transcription factors. While the role of pluripotent transcription factors in stem cell maintenance is well understood, their functions beyond pluripotency remain unclear. In this study, we focused on NANOG, a core member of the pluripotency network, and investigated its roles in two different models of differentiation: the transition from the naive to the primed pluripotent state and neuroectodermal differentiation. Our findings demonstrate that NANOG plays a …
A Deep Review Of Sustainable Approaches For Hydrogen Production For Energy Generation, Patrick Bernard Ferron
A Deep Review Of Sustainable Approaches For Hydrogen Production For Energy Generation, Patrick Bernard Ferron
Theses and Dissertations
Fossil fuel energy sources such as coal, oil, and natural gas produce greenhouse gases upon combustion. Over time the greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere and cause global temperatures to continually increase. This continued rise in global temperatures has led to severe climate conditions that have resulted in increasing environmental, financial, social, and medical issues. To mitigate the rise in global temperatures, and the negative effects associated with it, the carbon intensity of our energy sources must be substantially reduced or eliminated where possible. In addition, alternate sources of carbon-free energy sources must be pursued and implemented. Hydrogen is …

Intergenerational Continuity Of Sexual Violence Victimization: A Socio-Ecological Examination Of Risk, Angela Hunter Minnich
Theses and Dissertations
The present study examined intergenerational continuity of sexual violence victimization across the lifespan within mother-daughter dyads. Because increased risk for sexual violence in daughters is not the fault of the mother, this study examined risk factors across socio-ecological levels (i.e., individual, familial, and community risk factors) and the interplay across risk levels. Undergraduate and community dwelling mother-daughter dyads (N=202) completed self-report measures of Childhood Sexual Abuse (CSA), adolescent/adult sexual violence victimization (ASV), demographics, psychopathology, parenting, abuse and abuser characteristics, intimate partner violence (IPV), rape culture, and sexual education characteristics. Multiple mediation, moderation, and DYADIC analyses were implemented to test study …

Plant Composition And Turnover In Great Plains Conservation Reserve Program Grasslands, Lydia M. Westberg
Theses and Dissertations
The Conservation Reserve Program supports grassland reconstruction practices that vary in the number (richness) and identity of species added to enrolled sites. Although the program is administered at the federal level, the methods and species pools used to reconstruct these grasslands have changed over time and vary across the United States. Additionally, while the goal is to augment site species pools with desired species, there is some question as to what extent the prescribed practices result in a diverse species pool over the long term given the immense non-native propagule pressure that can exist on these sites. Unfortunately, no large-scale …

A Molecular Phylogeny Of Ctenuchina Kirby, 1837 (Lepidoptera: Erebidae: Arctiinae: Arctiini: Ctenuchina), Sydney Winterton
Theses and Dissertations
Ctenuchina are a subtribe of tiger moths in the subfamily Arctiinae and are known for their aposematism and mimicry of noxious insects. Their overall appearance signals predators of their unpalatability due to larval sequestration of plant secondary chemicals. The taxonomic history of Ctenuchina is complicated because of convergent phenotypes within the lineage and with other tiger moth groups such as the Euchromiina. Independent evolutionary events that converge on mimetic phenotypes obscure evolutionary relationships and render classifications based on morphology to be suspect. Although morphological phylogenies have since been used less often in favor of quantifiable, molecular-based phylogenies, these studies provide …

Csi Botany: Dna Barcode “Fingerprints” Identify Cryptic Urban Flora, Luis R. Vega
Theses and Dissertations
As short genomic markers, DNA barcodes can play a role in conservation by identifying cryptic species and hybrids when morphological approaches fall short. Here we present our application of barcodes to the identities of two wetland taxa as part of an ongoing floristic inventory of Van Cortlandt Park (VCP), Bronx, NY. Previous barcode data by Marriott et al. (2018) identified the VCP lake water lily as the exotic Nymphaea alba, rather than the native N. odorata as historically described. In addition, cattails in the park were historically identified as the native Typha latifolia and the exotic T. angustifolia …
