Hardly Working: The Labor Concerns Of Graduate Student Assistants In Writing Programs, Lily Victoria Howard-Hill Apr 2023

Hardly Working: The Labor Concerns Of Graduate Student Assistants In Writing Programs, Lily Victoria Howard-Hill

Theses and Dissertations

The instructors of undergraduate writing courses are very often graduate students who exist in a space between student and teacher, subsequently shouldering a dual burden of responsibility. This is particularly the case in freshman writing and composition classes. Graduate students that hold assistantships and work in writing programs have a number of concerns related to their academic labor, specifically the benefits and compensation they receive in exchange for their work. To further illustrate these issues, this project offers the results of an IRB-approved study that highlights the tight connection between graduate student assistants’ working conditions, the financial and material benefits …

Sustainable Approaches To Photo-, Thermo-, And Electro-Chemical Reactions Of Amines, James David Sitter Apr 2023

Sustainable Approaches To Photo-, Thermo-, And Electro-Chemical Reactions Of Amines, James David Sitter

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, sustainable routes for chemical synthesis have garnered renewed interest. As the world continues to fight pollution and rising costs, it is imperative that new routes of synthesis that continuously fight the issues of pollution and waste are discovered, defined and explored. While traditional synthesis routes that require energy input typically require the burning of fossil fuels to produce heat, the amount of resources that go into the production of these fossil fuels and the sequestration of its waste to minimize its impact on the carbon footprint is enormous. Furthermore, sustainable chemistry research aims to decrease and minimize …

Utilizing Deep Learning Methods In The Identification And Synthesis Of Gene Regulations, Jiandong Wang Apr 2023

Utilizing Deep Learning Methods In The Identification And Synthesis Of Gene Regulations, Jiandong Wang

Theses and Dissertations

Gene expression is the fundamental differentiation and development process of life. Although all cells in an organism have essentially the same DNA, cell types and activities vary due to changes in gene expression. Gene expression can be influenced by many gene regulations. RNA editing contributes to the variety of RNA and proteins by allowing single nucleotide substitution. Reverse transcription can alter the expression status of genes by inducing genetic diversity and polymorphism via novel insertions, deletions, and recombination events. Gene regulation is critical to normal development because it enables cells to respond rapidly to environmental changes. However, identifying gene regulations …

A critical aspect of civil infrastructure is structural health monitoring, of which digital image correlation (DIC) has been proven to be an effective and appropriate method. There is sufficient literature on the use of stationary DIC, but an unexplored aspect is DIC-equipped unmanned aircraft systems. It has been verified in University of South Carolina labs but has not been proved in a field environment. One of the challenges of field implementation is large scale speckle application. This work focusses on identifying and addressing challenges in bringing UAV-DIC technology from the lab to the field. This includes the development of optimized …

Food Insecurity In Youth And Young Adults With Diabetes: Prevalence And Association With Health Behaviors, Lauren Helene Martini Apr 2023

Food Insecurity In Youth And Young Adults With Diabetes: Prevalence And Association With Health Behaviors, Lauren Helene Martini

Theses and Dissertations

Given the life-long impact of diabetes(1-5), it is important to engage in behaviors that promote health and wellness to delay or prevent negative health outcomes(3, 6-10). Despite this, youth and young adults with diabetes generally do not adhere to nutritional(11-17) or physical activity(18, 19) recommendations. In households experiencing financial difficulties, especially those who are having difficulty providing sufficient food to all of its members, adhering to recommendations may be even more difficult.

The purpose of this dissertation is to better understand and contextualize food insecurity among youth and young adults (YYA) with youth-onset T1DM and T2DM. The first aim addresses …

Sex Differentials In Frailty In Medieval Ireland, Allison Claire Ham Apr 2023

Sex Differentials In Frailty In Medieval Ireland, Allison Claire Ham

Theses and Dissertations

Population sex differentials in morbidity and mortality are influenced by genetic, hormonal, behavioral, and environmental mechanisms, and in the majority of living human populations, females experience longer lifespans and lower mortality risks, but paradoxically, greater morbidities compared to males. This dissertation project explored sex differentials in frailty (i.e., relative risk of death compared to others in the population) in medieval Ireland to address the existing temporal and contextual limitations for interpreting how far back the modern female health-mortality paradox extends. The project had three main objectives: examine sex differentials in mortality risks between the early (500-1100 CE) and late medieval …

Nature As Culture: Ecofeminist Narratives Of Environmental And Colonial History, Sydney Leimbach Apr 2023

Nature As Culture: Ecofeminist Narratives Of Environmental And Colonial History, Sydney Leimbach

Theses and Dissertations

“Nature as Culture: Ecofeminist Narratives of Environmental and Colonial History” is a cross-cultural, comparative, feminist investigation of two films, The Nightingale and Wolfwalkers, and two books, The Giving Tree and The Overstory. The narratives are analyzed through a combination of ecofeminism and decolonial feminism, revealing the four narratives’ investment in the effects of colonization on the environment. The two chapters explore the association of women with nature, traditionally used as a subordinating position, instead as a condition of empathetic understanding with both the colonized and the environment. Further, these narratives use the association of women with nature as …

Aortopathies: Mechanism Of Pathogenesis And Therapy, Mengistu G. Gebere Apr 2023

Aortopathies: Mechanism Of Pathogenesis And Therapy, Mengistu G. Gebere

Theses and Dissertations

The aorta is the largest artery in the body which is directly connected to the left ventricle of the heart and functions as an elastic conduit that transports the ejected blood from the left ventricle to peripheral vessels. There are three layers to the aortic wall, tunica intima, tunica media, and tunica adventitia. The tunica media, the thickest middle layer, is composed of vascular smooth muscle cells (SMC) and the extracellular matrix (ECM) as its essential components. SMCs are circumferentially arranged and embedded in elastic lamellae. They are responsible for producing and maintaining/remodeling the extracellular matrix of the aortic media. …

Targeting Macrophages In Cancer Models Using Natural Compounds, Sierra Jordan Mcdonald Apr 2023

Targeting Macrophages In Cancer Models Using Natural Compounds, Sierra Jordan Mcdonald

Theses and Dissertations

Cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide. More specifically, breast cancer (BrCa) and colorectal cancer (CRC) continue to be the most diagnosed cancers and leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Given that surgery followed by adjuvant chemotherapy is only effective in 20% of CRC patients, and that there are no preventive agents for BrCa metastasis for hormone receptor negative patients, more effective agents and strategies are needed in both the prevention and treatment of these cancers. As one of the most abundant immune cells in the tumor microenvironment, macrophages help regulate primary tumor growth, angiogenesis, and metastasis in many …

Targeting Of Mediator Kinases For Cancer Therapy And Resistance Prevention, Zachary Thomas Mack Apr 2023

Targeting Of Mediator Kinases For Cancer Therapy And Resistance Prevention, Zachary Thomas Mack

Theses and Dissertations

Estrogen receptor (ER)-positive breast cancers make up 70% of all breast cancer incidences in the US. Cell cycle progression of ER-positive breast cancer is highly dependent on cyclin-dependent kinases (CDK) 4 and 6, the G1/S checkpoint kinases. Inhibitors of CDK4/6 have become a major addition to the clinical arsenal against ER-positive breast cancers. CDK4/6 inhibitor palbociclib (IBRANCETM) has been approved for the treatment of ER-positive breast cancers. However, palbociclib treatment eventually fails due to the development of resistance. Laboratory studies revealed several diverse mechanisms of palbociclib resistance, making universal re-sensitization difficult to achieve. However, prevention of the adaptive process that …

Sites Of Peace And Pain: The Black Grandmother Figure In Toni Morrison’S Beloved, Jazz, And Sula, Alexus Joannea Ray

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis examines how Toni Morrison captures the genuine lived unique experiences of Black grandmothers and their granddaughters throughout her novels and specifically in Beloved, Jazz, and Sula. My analysis takes a closer look at the complications behind Morrison’s grandmothers in order to demonstrate that, while she is strong, supportive, and family oriented, the Black grandmother figure can also be a person of peril. The main characters, Denver, Violet, and Sula must come to terms with the contradictions of strength and sacrifice that the novels insist are better left in the past. Drawing on Morrison scholarship and Black women’s …

Vaccinia Virus And Measles Virus As Oncolytic Vaccines: The Modulation Of The Viral Infectivity Via Surface Conjugations, Monchupa Kingsak Apr 2023

Vaccinia Virus And Measles Virus As Oncolytic Vaccines: The Modulation Of The Viral Infectivity Via Surface Conjugations, Monchupa Kingsak

Theses and Dissertations

Oncolytic virus (OV) therapy has been shown to be an effective targeted cancer therapy treatment in recent years, providing an avenue of treatment that poses no damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Not only do OVs cause direct oncolysis, but they also amplify both innate and adaptive immune responses generating long-term antitumor immunity. However, a key challenge facing oncolytic virotherapy is neutralizing antibodies in vaccinated patients, leading to the viral clearance after systemic administration and failure in the treatment. The encapsulation of OVs using biocompatible polymers is one of the promising methods to prevent the viral clearance from antiviral immune responses. …

Trauma And Linguistic Markers For Symptom Severity In Prolonged Exposure For Primary Care, As Observed Through The Use Of Narrative Review, Robert Alexander Ryan

Theses and Dissertations

Traditional trauma therapies used in the primary care setting (e.g., hospital, medical clinic, etc.) have posed challenges to patient success because they are not designed for the shorter duration treatment that is typical in primary care settings. One alternative solution is the Prolonged-Exposure for Primary Care protocol (PE-PC) that utilizes prolonged exposure using a brief take home assignment and several journaling prompts that are processed using principles from Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT). Still in its early stages of development, the PE-PC protocol can provide symptom relief in as little as four, 30-minute sessions and reflects one of the first trauma …

Substance Use Disorders And The Behavioral Effects Of Novel And Existing Compounds, Sarah Uribe

Theses and Dissertations

These investigations aimed to study the effects of experimental compounds for use in treating and preventing substance use disorders, particularly opioid use disorder (OUD) and alcohol use disorder (AUD). Identifying and testing potential medications for these two diseases is critical since current FDA-approved medications are only modestly effective, and addiction continues to spread. We previously demonstrated that co-administration of morphine and MP-III-024 produced synergistic effects in hot plate and von Frey assays. This study evaluated whether MP-III-024 also produced synergistic effects in behavioral tests sensitive to the side effects of morphine. Our findings suggest that co-administration of morphine and MP-III-024 …

Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen Mar 2023

Developing Tools For Introducing Modifications Into The Chicken Genome, Zachary Eldon Olsen

Theses and Dissertations

The chicken is a classic model organism that has provided key insights into embryonic development. Chicken embryos can be directly manipulated and observed during development while retaining the potential to reach adulthood. Despite this benefit, the utility of the chicken in studying development has been limited by the difficulty of introducing genetic changes to the genome. The recent development of cell culture conditions for chicken primordial germ cells (cPGC) has made it feasible to produce transgenic chickens, but there is still a lack of tools for introducing genetic modifications into cPGCs. Recombinase Mediated Cassette Exchange (RMCE) is a technique that …

Theses and Dissertations

Since the emergence of AIDS in the early 1980s, strategies to mitigate the disease remain a high priority for medical professionals worldwide. While there is no broadly available cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS at this time, early diagnosis and treatment can drastically reduce the severity of the infection. To this end, antiretroviral drugs are regularly employed to combat the virus and achieve HIV latency in infected patients. One such drug, Darunavir, has been used as a highly effective HIV protease inhibitor. Recently, a growing interest in derivatization of Darunavir to test for improved drug efficacy has prompted great efforts in …

"Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin"Does N'T Feel Like Love: Exploring Queer Former Catholics' Narratives Of Lived Experiences, Taylor Kay Newswander Mar 2023

"Love The Sinner, Hate The Sin"Does N'T Feel Like Love: Exploring Queer Former Catholics' Narratives Of Lived Experiences, Taylor Kay Newswander

Theses and Dissertations

The Catholic Church is one of the oldest and most widespread religious organizations in the world. Most people are familiar with the Church in some way, but very few know what it is like to be a sexual or gender minority while being raised in a religion as conservative and set in its ways as the Catholic Church. We know that queer people do not stop existing just because one is religious, but not much is known about the sense-making that goes into performing both queer and Catholic identities. Narratives are particularly important tools of both sense-making and performance for …

On Your Block: Familial Representations Within The Hit Netflix Show On My Block, Grace Telfer Mar 2023

On Your Block: Familial Representations Within The Hit Netflix Show On My Block, Grace Telfer

Theses and Dissertations

Family is a large part of everyone’s everyday lives, and so is the media. In this study, I examine the Netflix hit show On My Block, looking at the family structures presented, the family interactions and functions, the influences that family has on the main characters, and the familial messages presented through the show. This is significant to both family and media studies as it adds to the conversation surrounding family representation within the media. In this study, I examined the first three seasons of On My Block using an open coding methodology to discern what emerged regarding my research …

Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason Mar 2023

Mothering Experiences Of Women In Jail, Bothwell Piason

Theses and Dissertations

Women make relatively small proportions of incarcerated population worldwide, but the rate at which they have been incarcerated over the past four decades in the U.S. has outpaced that of their male counterparts. Although carceral trends show declining patterns in prison population numbers, the jailed population continues on an upward trend (Bureau of Justice Statistics, 2022), studies have focused more on prison than jail. The disproportional incarceration of women is evident in jails where the majority of women incarcerated are mothers of young children (Sawyer & Bertram, 2022). The current paper explores mothering experiences of women in two Midwestern jails, …

Omnipotence And The Psyche: On A New Psychoanalysis, Dani Park Mar 2023

Omnipotence And The Psyche: On A New Psychoanalysis, Dani Park

Theses and Dissertations

In the first chapter, I propose a new psychoanalytical framework in which the subject is driven by a need for omnipotence. Omnipotence, which is redefined in my framework, propels the subject to overcome the Father, or the awareness of self that arises due to psychological maturation and sophistication. I also introduce a psychological development that is defined by the entrance of the subject into different stages (Womb, Eden, Wandering), which are punctuated by events (In-the-Beginning, Fall, Death) which transition the subject into the next stage. Lastly, I introduce my own topographical model of the self in which the subject is …

Expression Of Rcrb Confers Resistance To Hypochlorous Acid In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Mary Crompton Mar 2023

Expression Of Rcrb Confers Resistance To Hypochlorous Acid In Uropathogenic Escherichia Coli, Mary Crompton

Theses and Dissertations

Neutrophils are the most prominent cell of the human innate immune system. Upon infection by bacteria, neutrophils are recruited to the site of infection where they target bacteria for degradation by phagocytosis. Neutrophils are effective bacterial killers through a high production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive chlorine species (RCS), which kill ingested microbes through damage to nucleic acids, lipids, and proteins. To prevent succumbing to the lethal effects of oxidative stress, pathogens such as Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC), the primary causative agent of urinary tract infections (UTIs), have developed defense systems to combat ROS/RCS. We recently identified the …

Identification Of Gap Junction Genes Involved In The Tail-Flip Escape Circuit Of Marbled Crayfish, Rajit S. Roy Mar 2023

Identification Of Gap Junction Genes Involved In The Tail-Flip Escape Circuit Of Marbled Crayfish, Rajit S. Roy

Theses and Dissertations

Escape responses are highly stereotyped behaviors that enable organisms to avoid threats in their environment. To ensure the rapid and robust execution of these behaviors, they are often mediated by dedicated neuronal circuits with fast feed-forward signal propagation. Rectifying electrical synapses, which allow electrical current to preferentially flow only in one direction, are a hallmark of such circuits, and facilitate rapid and stereotyped neuronal signaling for fast, reflexive behaviors. In vitro studies have suggested that it is the heterotypic distribution of the gap junction proteins (called innexins in invertebrates), i.e., possessing different innexins in pre- and postsynaptic neurons, that enables …

Gyno-Gerontological Discourse And The Dearth Of Old Women Narrators In British Fiction 1790-1860, Lavender Elisabeth Earnest Mar 2023

Gyno-Gerontological Discourse And The Dearth Of Old Women Narrators In British Fiction 1790-1860, Lavender Elisabeth Earnest

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the remarkable dearth of old woman narrators in British fiction between 1790 and 1860, both documenting their under-representation and explaining it as, in part, a product of a wave of medical discourse disparaging the physical and mental vitality of post-menopausal women. Regarding methodology, I perform a random sample upon a corpus of first-person novels published in the period and categorize each according to the gender and age of the narrator. This analysis exhibits, unsurprisingly, that most narrators in the dataset are either in the first half of their life, male, or both. Old women represent only a …
