Religious education in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints as given by the seminaries is to help youth achieve a meaningful testimony that God lives, Jesus is the Christ, and Joseph Smith is a prophet of God. The purpose of this study was to determine why some youth were not taking advantage of this training by enrolling in seminary.
It was determined that the teachers were a negligible reason for lack of enrollment. Rather, the reasons stemmed more from a lack of awareness of the nature of the seminary program by some priesthood leaders, by the youth and …

Septic Tank Nutrients In Groundwater Entering Lake Sallie, Minnesota, David Robert Lee

The nutrient contribution of septic tanks to a lake was evaluated at Lake Sallie, in glacial outwash terrain of northwestern Minnesota. Groundwater entering the lake was collected by covering 0.258 m2 of lake bed with a bottomless cylinder vented to deflated plastic bag. Inflow velocity ranged from 0.01 to 2.5 micrometers per-second along 30% of the lakeshore. Groundwater inflow along an 800 m segment of shore amounted to 4.50 x 105 m3/year, and was uniformly distributed along the shore, but decreased exponentially away from shore.

Effect Of D-Amphetamine, Guanethidine, Disulfiram, And Stress On Gastric Ulceration In The Rat, Thomas M. Beall

Albino rats were injected with various doses of d-amphetamine (.02 mg/kg- 9 mg/kg) and subjected to 4 hours restraint in a cold (+5 degrees C) environment. Differential effects on ulceration were observed as a function ot the d-amphetamine dose level. Pretreatment with a .50 mg/kg injection of d-amphetamine significantly inhibited ulceration over that of saline injected, control animals, while a 9 mg/kg dose injection of the drug significantly facilitated it. Such results were explained in terms of a model interaction between sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system activity, and the effect that such activity has on gastric conditions conducive to ulceration. …

The pineal complex of rodents is made up of a pineal organ which developmentally always originates from the area between the habenular and posterior commissure and a pineal sac which is continuous with the choroid plexus of the third ventricle. This sac appears to be identical to the choroid plexus at both light and electron microscopic levels. The pineal sac abuts the deep and superficial pineal organs of the golden hamster. In the PET mouse, gerbil, kangaroo rat and Chinese hamster, the sac is contiguous with only small areas of pinealocytes. This sac never abuts true pineal parenchyma in the …

The purpose of this study was to determine the differences in instructional salary costs per student credit hour of major program offerings that are common among the four state colleges in North Dakota and identify the factors which contributed to these cost differences. Dickinson, Mayville, Minot and Valley City State Colleges were the four institutions which were examined in the study. Previous research has indicated that the level of curiosity of an individual is related to the amount of information which that individual can acquire incidentally. The present study was conducted to test two hypotheses: (a) High curiosity children will learn more material incidentally than low curiosity children, and (b) the level of curiosity will effect intentional learning.

Population and community studies dealing with radiation stress have essentially neglected the mites. When references have been made to the responses of mite populations to ionizing radiation, the form of radiation has almost always been gamma. This study reports results of naturally occurring populations of desert mites, at the Nevada Test Site, to ionizing radiation--largely beta. Eighteen species groups were identified from Berlese samples and tested for stress responses with species diversity indices and analyses of variations in predator-prey ratios. General agreement with previous studies showed a decreasing pattern in these two tests within the controls. This was interpreted as …

The Meat Inspection Division of the Bureau of Animal Industry in 195 0 reported that 322,647 livers or 2. 4% of 13,112,802 cattle slaughtered under United States Federal Inspection were condemned due to liver fluke infections (Price, 1953). This would amount to an annual loss of 3 million dollars in livers alone considering each liver weighed 10 pounds and retailed 65 cents per pound. This figure could conceiv-ably double or triple if additional losses due to animal death, decreased milk production, poor economic utilization of feed or lower livestock prices were considered.

The chiton Mopalia muscosa ranges from the open rocky coast to the bay environment, whereas the related chiton Mopalia lignosa is restricted to the outer rocky coast. The mantle cavity currents, anatomy and histology were investigated. Mucous gland cells of Mopalia muscosa are goblet type secretory cells. Their apparent ability to deliver their secretion rapidly together with having a short restitution period probably accounts for Mopalia muscosa having success at invading the bay environment. The mucous glands of Mopalia lignosa consist primarily of cells with medium to coarse secretory granules. These cells apparently are not as efficient at handling suspended …

The branched-chain amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine are transaminated to their respective a-keto acid analogues; a-keto- isocaproate (KIC) a-keto-p-methyIvalerate (KMV) and a-ketoiso- valerate (KIV) in normal mammalian tissues. Recently an interest in the genetic anomaly "branched-chain ketoaciduria" or "maple syrup urine disease", a metabolic disease involving the oxidative decarboxylation of the three branched-chain CC-keto acids, has stimulated efforts to characterize the nature of the enzymic conversions leading from the a-keto acids to their acyl coenzyme A products. Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), considered to be a synaptic transmitter within the central nervous system, has been shown to be localized mainly in the paleocortex of the brain. Others have shown disturbances of normal 5-HT metabolism to be associated with mental illness and disease. Attempts to inject tritium labelled 5-HT into cerebrospinal fluid of the rat brain for anatomical localization studies were·made. The following observations were noted, (1) there exists a perivascular space in which fluid flows and distribution is relatively uninhibited as compared to subarachnoid space, (2) the labelled 5-HT penetration of brain tissue parenchyma is restricted and radioactivity is …
