Prostaglandin Synthesis In The Feline Adrenal Cortex, Suzanne Gale Laychock

Studies were carried out on the feline adrenal gland to ascertain the role of prostaglandins in the mechanism of action of ACTH. Using tritiated arachidonic acid as a prostaglandin (PG) precursor , it was demonstrated by column and thin layer chromatography techniques that isolated trypsinized adrenocortical cells possess an active PG synthetase capable of synthesizing radiolabeled PGE, PGF, and PGA/B-like substances. Concentrations of ACTH (125 - 250 _μU) which stimulate steroidogenesis enhanced the conversion of radiolabeled arachidonic acid to PGE, PGF and the PGA/B products extracted from cortical cells and incubation media.

Incorporation Of Phosphoproteins And Phenol-Bound Proteins Into The Cuticle Of Periplaneta Americana, Joseph Atchison Florence Iv

The incorporation of phosphoproteins and phenol-bound proteins into the cuticle of Periplaneta americana was analyzed. Radioactive monosodium phosphate was injected into newly ecdysed cockroaches. Incorporation into haemolymph proteins as well as tanned cuticle was observed. Phosphoproteins were observed to be combined with the cuticle to a greater extent than monosodium phosphate. This suggests that phosphate is being incorporated into the cuticle more readily than monosodium phosphate. The relevance of these observations is discussed in light of phosphate being a possible crosslinking agent between chitin and cuticle protein.

Tetracyanoethylene and tetracyanoquinodimethane were reacted with various N,N-dimethyl-a, w-alkyldiamines to produce TCNE and TCNQ diamino and monoamino derivatives. NMR and ir spectra of the monoamino derivatives, 1-(N,N-dimethyl-a,w-alkyldiamino)-1,2,2-tricyanoethylenes and 7-(N,N-dimethyl-a,w-alkyldiamino)-7,8,8-tricyanoquinodimethans, indicated that these compounds exhibited strong nitrogen-hydrogen-nitrogen intramolecular hydrogen bonding. This phenomenon was corroborated by molecular weight and preliminary x-ray analyses.

The 1,1-bis(N,N-dimethyl-a,w-alkyldiamino)-2,2-dicyanoethylene and 7,7-bis(N,N-dimethyl-a,m-alkyldiamino)-8,8-dicyanoquinodimethan derivatives were polymerized with a,m-alkyldibromides containing two to six methylene groups to produce the corresponding ionene polymers. Viscosity measurements of the polymers indicated that the TCNE copolymers were generally of higher molecular weight than the corresponding TCNQ copolymers.

Seventy-five directors of the Institutes of Religion of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in California, responded to a questionnaire regarding their public relations' practices. Institute directors with formal training in public relations utilized more practices, an average of 30.4, than directors without formal training who used an average of 26.9 practices. Institute directors in different locations (divisions) did not differ in the average number of practices used. Seventeen percent of the directors had structured public relations' programs. Directors emphasized more frequently public relations practices relating to priesthood leaders (72 percent) and students (67 percent) than practices relating …

Efficacy Of Bunamidine Hydrochloride Against Immature And Mature Stages Of Echinococcus Granulosus, Lauritz A. Jensen

A study was conducted to determine the efficacy of bunamidine hydrochloride against the immature and mature stages of Echinococcus granulosus found in Utah. Twenty-seven dogs were obtained from local animal shelters and experimentally infected with the parasite. The drug was given at dosage levels of 25 mg/kg to 50 mg/kg of bodyweight. It was from 85.9 to 98.8% effective against the immature stage, and 100% effective against the adult stage. The results suggest that this drug can feasibly be used under field conditions where hydatid disease is endemic.

In Section I, I have put into literal terms the concept I have expressed through visual terms, that, art is adventure, for creator and viewer. I have defined the term adventure in relationship to myself and to the viewer. I have discussed the importance of juxtapositioning imagery. In Section II, I have elaborated on a few of my paintings that specifically illustrate concepts presented in the preceeding section of the thesis. More than 1500 vaginal smears and 75 0 urine samples were collected from 18 captive mountain lions, Felis concolor Linnaeus, 17 bobcats, Lynx rufus (Schreber), and 9 Canadian lynx, Lynx canadensis Kerr, from 1973-1974. Four types of epithelial cells were observed in the vaginal smears: parabasal, intermediate, cuboidal superficial and nivi- cuiar superficial. The smears were classified as anestrus , proestrus , estrus or metestrus on the basis of the four cell types and other smear characteristics . Methylene tetrahydrofolate reductase has been purified 1000-fold from porcine kidney and 400-fold from mouse L1210-induced tumor tissue by classical methods. The enzyme preparations have been demonstrated to be essentially free of contaminating methionine synthetase and serine transhydroxymethylase activity. Studies of the kinetic properties of the kidney and tumor enzymes, with respect to the reverse reaction using N5-methyl tetrahydrofolate as the variable substrate, have indicated Km values of 2.0 and 2.4 x 10-4 M, respectively. Inhibition of this key branch point enzyme in folate metabolism by a number of antimetabolites indicates that several of these antifolate compounds exhibit enzyme inhibition superior …

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of rapid reading training (as described by Vearl McBride) on the reading rates and comprehension of large print and braille readers. Of specific interest were comparisons among a group taught by McBride and two taught by the researcher under McBride’s tutelage, furthermore, it was a purpose of this study to investigate differences that exist between informal and formal tests given before and after sixteen hours of rapid reading training. Thyroid uptake and distribution of 125I, concentrations of T4 and T3 in serum and thyroids and concentrations of TSH in serum and pituitaries were measured to determine thyroid function of Uinta Ground Squirrels (Citellus armatus) native to 5,400 and 9,000 feet elevations to evaluate alterations in the state of the thyroid due to increased altitude. Uptake of 125I was 60 percent lower by squirrels from 9,000 feet. Incorporation of 125I into T3 was greater at the higher elevation, but absolute thyroid T3 concentrations were similar at both elevations. No significant differences were found in serum T3 concentrations, but squirrels living …

Problem: This study examined two samples of North Dakota Women, the recognized group and the control group. The purpose was to determine the models of the women in the two groups and to identify personal and family characteristics, educational development and experiences, vocational patterns, avocational interests and values that were similar to both groups and those that were significantly different between the two groups.

The effects of learned helplessness and its relationship to depression were discussed. It was concluded that if learned helplessness was a valid experimental model for depression it should have detrimental effects on positively reinforced behavior. A number of rats were divided into two yoked groups and these two groups were put on the same food deprivation schedule. The animals were then trained in an aversive situation in a shuttle box. One group received escape training and one group received helplessness training. The yoked pairs received the same mean time of shock exposure. The cortex of vertebrate adrenal glands secretes two major groups of hormones--glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids. Glucocorticoids, which have an oxygen atom at carbon number 11, increase the rate of gluconeogenesis and increase the mobilization of lipids in mammals (Turner and Bagnara 1971). At the same time there is a decrease in protein synthesis. This latter effect may be homologous to a decrease in fibroblast growth in culture in the presence of certain corticosteroids (Ruhmann and Berliner 1965). Disturbances of these balances result in deficiency and toxicity symptoms. Toxic doses of selenium, lead, and zinc, for example, are known to cause anemia (1, 2, 3, 4) and growth depression (5, 3) in experimental animals.

Macrocyclic polyether sulfides have been prepared by reacting an oligoethylene glycol dichloride with a dithiol in refluxing basic ethanol. The following new compounds were prepared: 1,5-dithia-(19- crown-6), 3-hydroxy-1,5-dithia-(19-crown-6), 1,4-dithia-(21-crown-7), 3-hydroxy-1,5-dithia-(22-crown-7), and 1,4-dithia-(24-crown-8). One other previously reported macrocyclic polyether sulfide was also prepared. The thesis includes a review of macrocyclic sulfides and other related compounds, the thermodynamics of interaction of several macrocyclic polyether sulfides with Ag^+, Hg^2+, and Pb^2+ ions, and a discussion of the structure of these materials.

Habitat partitioning was studied in a community of passerine birds in the Virgin River Valley of southwestern Utah. Ten habitat structure variables were measured for each of 24 species of passerine birds and several multivariate statistical techniques were used to determine the extent of habitat partitioning. Ordinations of species distributions along known environmental gradients were constructed using Principal Component Analysis and Stepwise Discriminant Analysis. Stepwise Discriminant Analysis was also used to determine which habitat variables were important in species separation. It was found that percent canopy cover was the most important variable. This study was an attempt to evaluate the effects on ten Rocky Mountain streams from management activities on U.S. Forest Service lands. Macroinvertebrate and water chemistry data were collected. Data analysis methods included: three diversity indices, a numerical taxonomy system of multivariate statistical analysis, numbers and biomass per selected taxa, percent composition per order, and total numbers and biomass. None of the methods of analysis were found to be adequate if used alone, but by using a combination of dendograms, biomass, and numbers data in addition to the diversity indices (SCI and d) stream stress could be detected. Two New Species Of The Genus Cycadeoidea From The Lower Cretaceous Of Utah, H. Blaine Furniss

Cyadeoidea medullara and C. cleavelandii, two new species of the genus Cycadeoidea, have been recovered from the Lower Cretaceous Cedar Mountain Formation of Utah. They have been described in histologic detail and relationships with similar species are set forth. Monoecism and pollination mechanisms have been discussed in connection with C. medullara. This data contributes to our knowledge of the diverse composition of Lower Cretaceous floras in Utah.

A Paleocene Flora From The Fort Union Formation Near Baggs, Carbon County, Wyoming, John L. Roth

A well-preserved Paleocene flora of 39 species from the Fort Union Formation near Baggs, Carbon County, Wyoming has been studied. This is the first study of the plant megafossils in this area. The most abundant species collected are: Carya antiquorum Platanus nobilis, Cercidiphyllum arcticum and Platanus raynoldsi. Together they represent 74% of the flora. The flora has been dated as Upper Middle Torrejonian. This report is also the first paleoecological study of any North American Paleocene flora. A review of energetics studies of raptorial species introduces four separate studies of temperature regulation by raptors. Golden Eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) nest site selection, as influenced by direction of exposure, is discussed. The data show strong directional preferences to the NNW by southern populations and SSE by northern populations. The tarsometatarsus is shown to have a thermoregulatory function in large falcons, and adaptations of this mechanism to varied habitats are examined. Color phase in Screech Owls (Otus asio) is shown to be related to metabolic differences that may explain the distributions of the color morphs. Development of thermoregulation in Flammulated …
