This paper discusses habitat availability and utilization and population changes of pinnat ?d grouse in the northern great plains. Three aspects of grouse ecology were examined in Grand Forks County, North Dakota, and Polk County, Minnesota, during March 197^ to March 1976: (1) habitat types of specific management units and the surrounding area, (2) past and present population levels and distribution within the study areas, and (3) spring home ranges, habitat utilization, and dispersal from the booming ground by males.

Utah Lake is a shallow eutrophic lake located in central Utah. It is characterized by high nutrient and silt loads and by large algal blooms in late summer and early fall. Phytoplankton samples and environmental data were taken from June through August 1974. Phytoplankton species were identified and then quantified in a Palmer counting cell. Environmental continuum theory was employed to describe algal succession and regression analysis was used to discover interactions between algal communities and the environment. The fate of ring-14C labeled triphenyltin hydroxide was studied in a model ecosystem consisting of soiI, water, and channel catfish (Ictalurus punctatus). Two initial levels of triphenyltin hydroxide concentration in soiI, 1.0 and 0.010 ppm, were compared. The soiI showed a gradual loss of 20 to 30% of the total 14C residues. Only about 33% of the remaining soil residues could be extracted and almost all of these were triphenyltin hydroxide. Total residues in the water were very low. Catfish muscle and viscera accumulated 14C residues continually throughout the treatment portion of the experiment. When the catfish were transferred to …

Four tree species (i.e. Pinus ponderosa, Juiperus scopulorum, Quercus Gambelii, and Ceanothus velutinus were chosen for this study. Ten individuals of each species were selected and their associated understory communities and adjacent non-understory communities sampled. Data taken included biotic and abiotic parameters. The data was subjected to similarity index analysis, cluster analysis, discriminant analysis, and x^2 analysis. The results were confirmed by all tests. The forest canopy was shown to directly influence the understory community. The understory community is a shrub-grass dominated type while the non-understory community is an annual-forb dominated type. The different tree species were also shown to …

Diethylaminoethyl cellulose was titrated with acid and base in various concentrations of NaCl. The pK values were determined from titration curves using a graphical technique. Two titratable groups were observed from the acid titration curve, a major and a minor group. The minor group, which represented 20% of the acid titration, was barely detectable in the base titration curve and had a salt-independent pK of 6.0. The pK of the major group was strongly salt-dependent and was approximately a linear function of log N NaCl. An equilibrium shift caused by the counter ion may explain the salt dependence. Protoplasts were isolated from tobacco and barley leaves in sucrose or mannitol using commercially available cellulases and macerozymes. Barley growth and protoplast isolation and purification conditions were optimized so that protoplasts were obtained in high yields free of unwanted debris and organelles. A technique for processing barley and tobacco protoplasts for examination by scanning electron microscopy was developed in which protoplasts seem to have maintained their structural integrity. Barley and tobacco protoplasts took up 3H-B. subtilis DNA, 125I-B. subtilis DNA or 125I-M. luteus DNA as a linear function of time (0-6 hr) and DNA concentration (0-200 μg/ml). Up to 16 …

Intraspecific competition is important in determining habitat utilization by members of a single species. Effective use of habitat may involve partitioning the available resources: space, time and food among individuals of different age, sex, and/or reproductive state. Numerous publications deal with interspecific competition (McCloskey and Fieldwick 1975, Cody 1973, Rosenzweig 1973, Stewart and Levin 1973, Gaby 1972, Brown 1971, Koshkina 1971, Sheppe 1967, Caldwell and Gentry 1965, Cameron 1964, Clough 1964, Gause 1932), but little has been written on intraspecific competition among populations of organisms in nature.

Cytosol Binding Of Steroid Hormones In Sheep Brains And Pituitaries, David Carl Marcusen

The uptake and binding of tritiated cortisol, corticosterone, and dexamethasone in cytosols isolated from various regions of non-adrenalectomized (intact) and adrenalectomized sheep brains and pituitaries were studied. [3H]-cortisol and [3H]-corticosterone were bound preferentially by cytosols from the hippocampal and septal regions of the brain, whereas, [3H]-dexamethasone was preferentially bound by cytosol from the pituitary. Cytosols isolated from the brains of adrenalectomized sheep bound significantly more [3H]-corticosterone than did cytosol from the brains of intact animals. Pre-incubation of cytosols from the hippocampus of adrenalectomized animals with non-radioactive testosterone or estradiol did not significantly block the subsequent binding of [3H]-cortisol. This study introduces factors in the post-pubertal change of gender role in a group of male pseudohermaphrodites in the Dominican Republic. The individuals grow up as girls because of ambiguous genitalia at birth. Upon the onset of puberty, with development of scrotum and phallus, they generally select adult male models to emulate as their future role behavior. The essay describes the socio-cultural setting in which the children are raised and proposes a theory that differential socialization of boys and girls and adult access to resources are contributing elements in the decisions to switch gender roles. Protein subunit structure in the nuclear envelope has not been previously described. Covalent crosslinking of polypeptides provides a method for studying the subunit structure of protein-rich systems. In this study, several polypeptide crosslinking methods have been used to determine associations among polypeptides in isolated chicken erythrocyte nuclear envelope. Interchain associations that exist in the isolated membrane were fixed by crosslinking the polypeptides in the isolated nuclear envelope. Crosslinked and uncrosslinked polypeptides were resolved by electrophoresis in a dissociating detergent system. Each agent caused distinctive alterations in the gel pattern. There have been several significant studies during recent years concerning the relationship between parental socioeconomic background and achievement. This research examines religious influence, parental control, family size, support, and educational encouragement which in turn influence educational and occupational attainment.

Data were obtained from questionnaires completed by 843 married Mormon men from Canada.

Only respondent's religious activity, parental support, and educational encouragement were significant in determining the occupational and educational attainment of the respondent. Family size and parental control were not significant.

Effect Of Altitude On The Peripheral Degradation Of Thyroxine In The Uinta Ground Squirrel (Citellus Armatus), Stuart K. Ware

Various methods were employed to detect changes in the peripheral degradation of thyroxine (T4) in adult Uinta ground squirrels (Citellus armatus) collected at two different altitudes (5400 and 9000 feet.) Plasma half-life of injected T4-125I (tl/2) was significantly decreased with altitude, as was T4-125I distribution space (TDS) and T4 degradation and secretion rate (TSR). In vitro deiodination of T4-125I by heart homogenates was not affected, while urinary excretion of thyroxine derived iodide was increased at high altitude 44-70 hours post-injection. Both total and free serum T4 concentrations were reduced at high altitude, although not significantly. The cause of the reduced …

Quantitative information on chemical and physical properties of soils under aspen and jack pine and chemical properties of peat and water under black spruce and tamarack, is limited. The present study quantifies soil particle size, electrical conductivity (E.C.), water soluble and replaceable calcium (Ca) , magnesium (Mg), potassium (K), sodium (Na) , manganese (Mn) and strontium (Sr) concentrations in soils under aspen and jack pine communities. Aspen was found on alkaline clay soils with high Ca and Mg concentrations, and jack pine grew on wel1-drained, acidic, sandy clay loams high in Mn. Analyses of the fish, parasites and water of four North Dakota rivers in the Missouri River and Hudson Ba.y drainages were made. A total of 277 fish representing 13 families was. collected from June 28 through November 2, 1975 from 19 sampling stations on the Missouri River below Garrison Dam, the James River above Jamestown Reservoir, the Sheyenne River above Lake Ashtabula and the entire Wild Rice River. The neogastropod Amphissa columbiana is found abundantly in subtidal areas of the San Juan Archipelago. Two populations studied were composed of distinct age classes of sexually immature and mature specimens. Reproduction appears to take place in the fall by snails at least two years old. Amphissa is a chemoreceptive scavenger that usually feeds on carrion and on dead and injured animals. Feeding behavior is mediated by chemical attractants from dead and traumatized tissue. An unusual feeding association is formed where Amphissa congregate around feeding predators to share their meals. A specific defense mechanism is deployed by Amphissa especially in response …

The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of raising carp on pig manure and coli, Brassica campestris. The use of pig feces as a source of fish food has been questioned by researchers (Hickling 1968). Coli was selected for dietary intake by fish since it is used for human consumption by the Indians of Guatemala. Commercial fish food (Silver Cup) was used for a control diet. These diets were both combined and used as a single source of food.
