Oncogenic Transformation By Herpes Simplex Virus, James Christian Burns

Many lines of evidence exist associating herpes simplex virus (HSV) with the development of carcinoma. Data from human studies includes seroepidemiologic studies of carcinoma patients and the localization of viral markers in human cancers. Experimental studies include in vitro transformation of cultured cells and viral induced alterations of host DNA. Much of this evidence is anecdotal or associative in nature and does not prove a cause and effect. The purpose of this research was to investigate the oncogenic potential of HSV type 2 (HSV-2) in vivo and in vitro.

The presence of an adenyl cyclase system within the haemocyte of Periplaneta americana has been confirmed by previous investigations, with corresponding experiments using dibutyryl cyclic AMP to show enhancement of 14c-tyrosine uptake into the cuticle linked to stimulation of the sclerotization process.

In the present studies, American cockroaches held at depressed temperatures were treated with bursicon, revealing an increase in haemocyte cyclic AMP concentrations. The levels declined with progression of time, probably resulting from enzymatic hydrolysis.

Primary amebic meningoencephalitis is a fatal disease of man caused by the free-living ameboflagelate Naegleria fowleri. In general, the victims have been active, healthy, young adults with a recent history of swimming or other fresh water-related activity. Infection with N. fowleri is apparently by way of nasal introduction of amebae-containing water. After nasal installation, electron microscopic and histopathologic studies with experimental animals reveal that amebae reside in the olfactory mucosa and then invade and migrate through the submucosal structures into the nerve plexuses. Amebae pass through pores of the cribiform plate and into the subarachnoid space. Subsequently, amebae invade the …

In this literature review I will briefly describe the general biology of transferable antibiotic resistance in bacteria, the genetic elements involved (plasmids) and several specific plasmid associated phenotypes. This will be followed with a review of the general biology of Bacteroides, the information known concerning its plasmid reservoir and finally a review of the information documenting the emergence of transferable clindamycin resistance in Bacteroides. The latter aspect represents the central focus of research described in this thesis.

The Child's Sex And Birth Ordinal Position: Its Effects Upon Fathers' Interaction With Their Natural Five-Year-Old Children In A Selected Provo Utah Mormon Sample, D. Wayne Brown Jr.

Thirty-nine fathers were observed to determine if they interact differently with their child as a result of the child's sex or birth ordinal position.

Results indicated that fathers expected more of their sons, had a higher readiness of explanation for them, and criticized them more often. Fathers gave more praise, physical contact and supportive behavior to their daughters. Birth ordinal effects paralleled and interacted wiith the child's sex.

Stepwise regression yielded a mean value of 44.16 in explaining the overall variance in dependent variables. It emphasized the number of hours the father spent with his child and family, the father's …

Recent theorizing has postulated that there exists for every individual an optimal level of arousal. Deviations from this optimal state produce discomfort which motivates behaviors aimed at remediation. Potential causes of underarousal include the attenuation of perceptual input and excessively rapid habituation to sensory input. Both of these processes have been linked dynamically to the psychopathic condition. Presumably, in the context of restricted opportunities for involvement in highly stimulating activities, the psychopathic individual attempts to alleviate the stress caused by chronic sensory deprivation through participation in illegal behaviors. Bighorn Sheep In North Dakota: Population Estimates, Food Habits And Their Biogeochemistry, Steven D. Fairaizl

Ground and aerial surveys conducted during this study revealed that the population size of bighorn sheep in southwestern North Dakota is between 200- 250. The present population began when 18 bighorn sheep from British Columbia were transplanted into an enclosure on Magpie Creek in McKenzie County. All surveys indicated a sex ratio approaching 100:100 with an annual reproductive success of 15-20%. Food habit analysis revealed that approximately 90% of the diet was browse and 10% grass. During spring, fall and winter, the dominant browse species in the diet was winterfat (Eurotia lanata), whereas in the summer buffaloberry (Shepherdia argentea) was …

This study was undertaken to investigate the population and abundance of year-classes of the buffalo fishes in Lake Sakakawea, North Dakota. Fish used in this study were obtained from Grasteit Dakota Fisheries, a commercial fishing operation headquartered in Newtown, North Dakota.

Only bigmouth buffalo (Ictiobus cyprinellus) and smallmouth buffalo (Ictiobus bubalus) were collected during this study; no black buffalo (Iciobus niger) were captured. The age and growth of these fish was found to be quite similar to that in other Missouri River mainstem reservoirs. The mean condition factor (K-TL) for the bigmouth was found to be 1.88 and for the …

The properties of DNA methyltransferase in various age rats were investigated to better characterize the enzyme. When purified chromatin from 5-day-old rat brain or liver nuclei was incubated with S-adenosyl-L-[methyl-³H]-methionine, 5-[methyl-³H]methyl-cytosine was the only product of methylation. The optimum pH of the DNA methyltransferase was approximately 8.0 with little or no change in activity over a pH range of 6.9 to 8.3. The Km value of the chromosomal bound DNA methyltransferase for S-adenosyl-L-methionine (AdoMet) was 3.5 ± 0.15 μm and 4.2 ± 0.13 μm, in the liver and brain, respectively. The upper Red River Formation in North Dakota comprises a subtidal/intertidal facies overlain by three evaporitic sequences of four lithologic units each, labeled "P," "R," and "F" in stratigraphic order. Four porosity zones are recognized in the upper Red River: the subtidal/ intertidal facies forms one porosity zone, and each evaporitic sequence contains another. Each unit in a sequence, as well as the sequence itself, is thinner and less widespread than its preceding counterpart. All strata are laterally continuous across the main part of the Williston basin in North Dakota, but, the porosity zones eventually disappear to the east as …
