The primary purpose of this study was to determine if there is a need for a doctorate in aviation, what content areas should be included in the doctoral program, and what type of degree should an aviation doctoral program establish, as perceived by doctorally-prepared aviation educators. A two-round Delphi method was used to obtain a consensus from a group of doctorally-prepared experts on the content areas for doctoral programs in nonengineering aviation science. A key goal of multicultural education is to help students attain more positive racial attitudes. Racial incidents on college and university campuses in the United States attracted national attention. The schools in Western societies need to act decisively to help students acquire more democratic attitudes and values. The literature suggests that schools can help students become less prejudiced and acquire more democratic attitudes and values.The purpose of this study was to examine students' attitudes toward racial/ethnic issues and groups and to identify predictors of attitudes among undergraduate college students (N = 583). Part one is the study of 13-carbaartemisinin analogs as potential antimalarial drugs. Based on knowledge of the artemisinin's chemistry, mode of action, and structure-activity relationship, we proposed 13-carba-10-deoxoartemisinin 6 as an orally active antimalarial. Thus, the total synthesis of 6 was carried out and completed in 12 steps with a yield of 2% starting with ($-$)isopulegol. More analogs were produced from an intermediate in the total synthesis sequence: two stereoisomers of 6, 13-carbaartemisinin, and five tricyclic analogs. In general, the 13-carba analogs showed lower in vitro biological activity than artemisinin 1, only a stereoisomer of 6 displayed comparable activity to …

Hydrologic Factors Affecting The Discharge Of Ground Water In The Red River Of The North Basin, Northeastern North Dakota, Michael Lee Strobel

Ground-water discharge from bedrock aquifers contributes significant amounts of salinity to the Red River of the North. The area of major discharge is represented on the land surface by saline soils, wetlands, and flowing wells. As tributaries flow through these areas, the dissolved-solids concentrations in the streams increase. This salinity is then transported to the Red River of the North and northward to Canada. The bedrock units that supply the saline water are mainly the Dakota Group. Overlying the bedrock are sediments from numerous glacial advances and lacustrine sediments from glacial Lake Agassiz. These units form confining layers over the …

This work was done to determine the toxicity and bioactivity of four organic insecticides and ultimately find answers about their toxic potential. Thus, farmers will be able to take the necessary precautions when using them. This investigation was performed in the Laboratory of Biology of the Eastern University Center (Chiquimula) at the University of San Carlos, Guatemala. In order to determine the acute toxicity and bioactivity of the organic insecticides ANONAZO, BOX, AJORIN, and NARCISO, five doses were used in albino mice and three concentrations in nauplii of brine shrimp (Artemia salina). In certain experimental situations, the data observed are pseudo-proportional. By this, we observe the numerator, the number of responders, but the denominator, the total number, is random and, possibly, unobserved. In such situations, the data often exhibit "extra" variability due to the randomness of the denominator. Analysis of these data should account for this overdispersion. Several authors have proposed parametric approaches to this problem. Finney [Biometrika (1949) 36, 239-256] proposed the use of a mixture of the binomial and Poisson distributions. In 1987, Vermeij proposed the hypothesis of escalation, which states that biological hazards, such as predation, have increased through the Phanerozoic. This hypothesis has been extremely controversial due to the fact that it assumes that biotic factors, such as predation, have had an important role in evolution. Several studies have focused on the validity of the hypothesis of escalation. Kelley and Hansen (1996) offered a modified exposition of the escalation hypothesis. The Kelley-Hansen hypothesis states that escalation cycles are punctuated by periods of mass extinction. The periods of mass extinction would preferentially eliminate the highly escalated prey and, therefore, a …

The intent of the present work responds to the necessity of the settlers in depressed areas of La Paz's Altiplano in Bolivia of knowing the reality surrounding the unfolding of their lives. The focus takes into account only one part of all that weighs down on them: that part dealing with their nutritional and alimentative state. The American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) estimates the number of therapists in the nation's occupational therapy workforce at 46,357. Silvergate (1994) estimates a 71% shortage based on the actual vacancies for occupational therapy personnel currently exists. In response to the growing demand for occupational therapists, the number of academic programs in occupational therapy has increased. Currently there are 85 accredited occupational therapy programs and 30 developing programs in the United States. In addition, for every newly available student space in professional-level programs, there were a reported 3.4 applicants. With only five doctoral programs in occupational therapy in the United States, …

The Little Rock Central High Crisis of 1957 has been examined by numerous scholars from a variety of perspectives. Much less research has been devoted to the following year--the Lost Year, 1958-59--when Little Rock high schools were closed to all students, black and white. The entire period surrounding these two academic years found this Southern American community electrified with racial conflict, societal disruptions, and political machinations. Though all people in the community were affected by such unsettling times, no lives were more disrupted than those of teachers. Closed schools meant the interruption of professional careers. The confusion within the community …
